Well played. I don't think anyone (including myself) expected these guys to take down the Johns. Tardio and Andrea are so underrated.

In the interview after the match, Tardio only sounded excited when contrasted with JW Johnson. Excellent play, fellas!

The Johns brothers will be back and continue to win gold medals. They just didn't have it today, as evidenced by Ben's excruciatingly slow start. Give credit to Tardio and Daescu. They played a brilliant game. They were unafraid of the moment and stayed consistent with their own game plan. The Johns don't have problem with speed. They've shown that they can adapt to ANY style. It boils down to which team can impose their will and execute with fewer mistakes. And today, it was Tardio and Daescu.
@BookValue201811 ай бұрын
Disagree somewhat with this assessment: 1) When the Johns do lose - they lose to speed. This is the proper way to play them. Ignatowich and Loong almost took them out in a best of 5 this way. 2) Even Ben Johns himself disagrees with your "fewer mistakes" comment. Ben Johns thinks in terms of won and lost points...like a +/- system. Tardio and Daescu were smart on their speed ups but opted for aggression. They sailed some attacks and got balls smashed in their chests...but they kept going for it. 3) While the Johns will continue to be dominant - the game plan is out there on how to beat them: Keep almost all balls to Ben. Collin is too hard to attack. Dink with Collin and then speed up at Ben. The game is speeding up so much - and Ben can't cover the amount of court he is used to covering.
@notnotnownow962210 ай бұрын
Is it soo hard to accept Johns are not the best or their tactic with Ben taking 70% of the court might just be wrong?
@CareyFan10 ай бұрын
@@notnotnownow9622 if they are not the best, then who is? The Johns ARE the best. They've proven it. And nobody has really proven that Ben taking 70% of the court is the wrong approach. They win with that approach consistently. Other teams are figuring a few things out. But in order to beat them, you have to play nearly perfectly and the Johns need to be having an off day. Losing once in a while does not prove that they are no longer the best. No, they're not indestructible. But they are still the best. And there's no other team that has the track record they have. It's really not close.
@notnotnownow962210 ай бұрын
@@CareyFan They were the first and had the advantage that pickleball is not very popular at young ages and there is no money so not a lot of good athletes are getting in. But slowly you see more and more better players coming in, like Jack Sock. But in the same time you will have fans of different athletes who will never want to admit that athlete is not the best in the world. Ben's approach of taking 70% or the court is bad and people don't want to admit it. When you play on the right side and the partner is pushing you and coming over the middle again and again take from your reaction time and mindset cause you are not free to judge the game and move, now you have to see how your partner is playing and what is he trying to do and to adjust to that. Why don't you put Ben Johns on the right side, push him further right and then show me how is he the best on the court? Oh, make no mistake - tennis and pickleball are completely different than team sports, where everybody starts each season from zero - here once that you are up it's easier to remain on top.

Daescu is rock solid and has a huge wing span. Tardio has shown big talent in the past but not the consistency. He's starting to mentally and physically mature and if he can keep putting together consistent performances like this one he could be one of the best.
@jah.5.11 ай бұрын
The Johns bros need to pick up their speed of play, they have always been calm, collected, patient and technical, but when the game speeds up, they don't react well. The speed and athleticism from Tardio and Daescu are what got them the win, with some great technique and skill of course.
@TooHonestButtTrue11 ай бұрын
They literally win everything so a down week is to be expected they aren’t robots. I doubt they’ll change things too much. They stick to their style religiously.
@bicyclethief11 ай бұрын
Nah they have no problem with fast games. No team was more aggressive and played faster than Matt Wright and Riley Newman were-- and the Johns essentially broke them. They do have a problem being slow out of the gates, which I think is exacerbated by the progressive draw: they don't get some qualifiers to warmup on. Instead they get killers in their first match and sometimes 2 out of 3 games isn't enough time to acclimate to the intensity and level.
@BookValue201811 ай бұрын
@ethief Riley and Wright's winning combo was Matt driving and Riley crashing. They defeated them by keeping all returns to Riley. That was the simple fix. And - I have a comment above - but when the Johns do lose, they lose to speed. Nobody out-dinks them or "out-consistents" them. But when teams get hot and attack, they can win. The key is being able to have a solid enough dinker on the left side (check for Daescu) and a dynamic attacker on the right (check for Tardio). Same thing we've seen when Jorja/JW beat Ben and ALW. And when Young beat the Johns.

It seems like every announcer goes" would you believe so and so just got upset on championship court". It's so frustrating. At the very least they can say"spoiler alert" before they do it so we can skip that part. Please fix this
