Really appreciated that too. I did not know the difference between bamboo and rattan. Cudos to your friend who did such a great job on the weaving too. Just amazing the effort put into restoring these pieces and such a beautiful result! I'll bet your dad even learned something on this restoration.

_"When I have great customers that are willing to pay for something they love to have restored"_ -- We should ALL be doing this. The cost of restoration is VERY comparable to the cost of new furniture, especially of the quality that people like Trena does and it keeps our money in the LOCAL ECONOMY and out of Big Corp hands and in the hands of local craftspeople. You get a really great piece of furniture and keep your community thriving at the same time.

My sentiments exactly. A hard sell in this instant gratification society we currently live in. I have been woodworking for many years and prefer to make a lot of my own furniture. Takes a lot longer but is built wayyy better than the cheap stuff on the market nowadays. I make nearly everything with two rules in mind. It has to have some style to it and be what i call fatboy proof. My chairs don't break when you sit in them, drawers do not fall apart and bedframes do not sag.

Well said. It’s ridiculous to fill up landfills with things that could be repaired. Buy quality to begin with.. leave the junk from China in China and support your local economy.

@@HBSuccess My nephew lives in south-central Oregon and regularly goes to the landfill to find stuff that people throw away that is perfectly serviceable. He fixes the stuff up and resells it. He's found all sorts of things, like big-screen TVs, and some of the stuff isn't even broken. People just want something new so they just throw away the old one. It's amazing to me.

You did a great job and revealed your tenacity. I dislike rattan, but there is no denying the results. Also, with regards to "customers that are willing to pay" I would offer that to find new furniture built to the standards of something old and worth refinishing would require skipping the big box stores and straying into the studio of an artisan. At that point, the refinish is probably the bargain.

When I moved into my current house a little over 1.5 years ago, the previous owner had left a Rattan chair with a footstool. It's wasn't in too bad of shape. My wife made cushions for it and I took it camping a couple of times. It's very comfortable. Unfortunately, the dogs got to it, tore up the cushions and chewed off the strapping in several places. I got it put away so they can't get to it and do any more damage. I was just going to toss it, but I've seen a couple of videos of Trena restoring rattan furniture and decided to look up what it would cost to replace it. HOLY COW! That chair is worth like $300! I'm moving back up to Oregon in a couple of months and can't wait to have a place to work. I think this chair might be my first project in the new shop.

A fantastic result ,our first lounge set was rattan 55 years ago and apart from the cushions being replaced several times because of wear or fashion it still is as good structurally as it was the day we bought it , I keep it in my sunroom and it always reminds me of all the holidays in tropical countries as well as holidays in the north of my country Australia . The only problem is that it has a very dark varnished finish , now I've seen what you can make it look like with a natural finish I'm going to have to find someone to redo it like you have . It's a pity we live so far apart I would have given you the task of modernising it in a heart beat .

Absolutely stunning, Trena. What a project though. And your friend’s weaving skills are amazing. I grew up in Miami (been in Dallas for 23yrs now) and we had lots of rattan over the years. I was s glad to see you use the soda blaster. I just purchased one specifically for a piece with a lot of detail, with several thick coats of a dark stain and varnish. Need to get it down to raw wood so I can refinish is in a ceruse finish. Love the final results of this set!💜

Years ago when my father was moving out of town (having retired), he offered me a rattan sofa and chair set he'd had in the covered porch of his home. The set was in need of very little work to return it to like new condition. I didn't take it (I was overruled by the big boss - which reminds me of the time when our son was little, and he'd asked me why it was that if we two voted for something, why his mother always had the final say. And how I'd told him that whereas we three did indeed have one vote apiece, the reality of it was that his mother's vote was much bigger than ours.) Seeing this set makes me wish I'd fought just a wee bit harder to take it. Always look forward to your videos.

@John'sFurnitureRepair~ STANDING OVATION for you Trena!! BRAVO!!! The beauty of the finished restoration is ASTOUNDING! I know your hands had to be sore after soda blasting for so many hours on end! OUCH! I am curious, what size air compressor do use in your shop? Horse Power and Tank Size? I'm sure you've gone through a couple of compressors over the years, is there a brand that you've found to be the most reliable for you? I am getting ready to purchase a new one, because the big "Speedaire" compressor my Dad's had since 1967 just bit the dust! Thanks for sharing your talent with us Trena :-). ~~Christy~~

Thankyou! I have had good luck with compressors, and haven't had one go on me yet, but my dads old guy did die last year. i just have a kobalt 80 gallon tank which provides plenty of cfm and capacity for what i do. its been doing great for just about 10 yrs now. you can definitely get better quality ones from a dealer though. when mine does die ill probably put more though into it.

@@johnsfurniturerepair Thank You Trena that really helps me! I looked at a new, comparable Speedaire Model to my Dad's and it was $8K+.... I'm certain it's worth the money considering his lasted 54 years and it was up for ANY task Dad needed it to perform. But Holy Moly.... it's out of my price range! He was a Master Tool & Dye Maker, Machinist, built and raced 1/4 Mile drag boats and generally a Jack of all Trades. I know I don't need the same caliber compressor as his, I just need one with enough CFM and tank capacity, that's reliable, easy to maintain, and backed by a solid warranty. I'm truly impressed by your Kobalt given the sheer number of hours you've likely put on it over the last 10 years! It opens my mind up to some of the more reasonably priced options out there!! THANK YOU AGAIN! ~~Christy~~
