I want to rebuild a old out board to see if it would last as long as new one when I am done. If the out board performs like it did when it was new. If I get a thousand hours out of it. That would make it worth my time. I have always been told that a outboard is only good for a thousand hours. That is way a inboard is so much better. Captains that I know that run out boards use both of them to get off shore and only use one the rest of the day. Then the next day use the other one. This way the get twice the time out of them.
@davidelton88605 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that about outboard's life span....I would guess that it depends on it always having the correct oil/gas mix, a good working water pump, and of course salt water vs. fresh water. With all the work you have put into that 15, I think it would outlast a new one hands down. Back then, those motors were made to last. I have a 1961 Johnson 10hp on a little 14' aluminum V-bottom here that runs great. The fellow I bought it from just did the regular things to it over the years, and she does love her 16:1 oil mix:) Cant wait to see your vid of that 15 running on a boat :)

Sure hope you put sealer/grease on those screws....Was the water tube grommet OK? I'm sorry you pulled that driveshaft out of the white gearcase, now you have to mess with getting those shift detent balls back in place. How the heck did the prop shaft seals get like that? Sounds real nice buddy, can't wait to see her on a boat purring away...
@OmFishing5 жыл бұрын
I did use sealer on those screws, I have had to many problems when others didn't. The water tube grommet looked very good. I made sure I was easy when handling the exhaust tube and water tube. I have no idea how the seal got like that in the lower unit. The bearing look good. I have went this far I was ok with the prop shaft pulling out. I did not try to stop it. I did fine both of the detent balls and the spring. The way the rest of the build went I wanted to be sure the lower unit was ok too. I was pleasantly surprised when it started and sounded so good. Next I am going to put it on the boat and take it to the lake.
@fleetwin15 жыл бұрын
Cool! Like I said, the original style upper water tube grommets were best, so I'm glad you left it in place....The replacement grommets get crushed in salt water... I can't remember just how those detent balls get reinstalled, perhaps it is not as difficult as the ones used on the 30-35 models....Can't wait to see this beauty on the lake!

@OmFishing4 жыл бұрын
On the 15 hp it is possible that the ignition coil is getting hot and breaking down. You did not say how long it runs before it quits. Most of the time it is in the carburetor or the linkage settings. That is what I would check first. On the 6hp I would check the upper water tube grommet make sure that the tube is in it and there is a good seal. You probably already change the lower grommet with the impeller assembly kit. I assume you made sure the gear case works so you know the drive shaft is turning. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and watching.
