I played this organ right after it was installed when my church was searching for a new Allen organ. It was the mid 1990’s, and this organ was the best thing to come out since sliced bread. I just pray they’re still using it.

As a former Allen representative, I am surprised at the number of boards/stops that are inoperable. The boards used in the ADC organs are generally quite stable and. The only thing that I can think of that would cause this type of failure would be a voltage surge caused by either lightning or a spike in the commercial electric supply. I wish them the best of luck with their new instrument. The Walker organs are fine instruments in their own right.
@miltronix4 жыл бұрын
Read about it on OrganForum (check the archives). The present owner of the instrument said it was easy to put the organ back into proper condition. You can read all the 'intrigues' at OF also, including a post from from an Allen VP regarding alleged mis-statements about its condition before replacement.
@anb7402 жыл бұрын
This was an ADC TT-4 tone board organ. The old voicing control pots were always the culprit on those boards. The factory offered to fix the defective boards for free, and the church turned them down. You won’t find any other manufacturer that would do that…..or even fix an organ of theirs this old!

It had a life expectancy far more than what this church gave it. Allen offered to fix the faulty tone boards for free, and the church turned them down. Spent a hefty six figure sum instead for the Walker, and it wasn’t necessary. This organ is now at the NC dealership and still works just fine after repairs.

This Allen Computer Organ sounds half decent. There is noticeable speaker coloration, especially when Diane Bish plays full organ. The Allen engineers simply do not understand transient intermodulation distortion arising from Doppler shifts associated with speaker cone movement. Full organ chorus is thin. Hauptwerk (Milan Audio) does a much better job.

Regardless, Diane Bish is the only one to demonstrate it effectively. The Joy of Music has brought so many Catholics closer to the instrument via EWTN. Good thing because Catholics are not generally as well acquainted with great organ literature as are our protestant brethren.

I'm not at liberty to discuss full details on the unscrupulous nature at which the organist went about to get the Walker organ installed. As I mentioned above, the faulty tone board replacements were offered free of charge from the factory. Walker's voicer for this area even went online to push the Walker by lying that the Allen was too costly to repair. Doesn't get any cheaper than FREE! At least the Allen is already in a new home and is 100% operational again.
@NorfolkSouthern-xt3xx5 жыл бұрын
@@anb740 I heard the Walker on a live stream,....it was okay,maybe,....but I feel the church should have taken Allen up on the offer free of charge the tone board replacements. After reading your comment about the Walker voicer lying about the Allen being too costly to repair to push the Walker,I don't have much respect for Walker now! Good thing is the Allen is in a new home and 100% operational again. Why the church lost confidence in Allen is a mystery to me,...and it's sad that they did! I may be a Rodgers guy,but I would have taken Allen up on the offer to repair the organ FREE of charge.
@anb7405 жыл бұрын
fingerstoes316 You’ve already been called out elsewhere by Allen’s VP regarding your erroneous claims on the cost of repairs and the fact that Allen DID offer to repair the organ free of charge. (he had previously done so with Walker’s own local voicer elsewhere) And since I’m one of the technicians who looked after the instrument in its final years, I know exactly how much they’ve spent. You made another false comment elsewhere on how they spent $73,000 this year alone on the Allen. WRONG! You then amended it to say within the last five years. Wrong again! Now you’re saying grand total. Which is it? I have no idea who has been feeding you this incorrect info from the church, but it is in error. And it has been confirmed elsewhere, again contrary to your statements, heat was never a factor in circuit board damage. Thankfully, as I now understand it, the Allen is now in a better home and back in operation with minimal effort. It’s now well known that the church spent hundreds of thousands on a new organ instead of taking up Allen’s offer to fix the current damaged boards for free and bring that organ back to 100% operation.

I know newer Allen’s can be brighter, but this one has that older muddled sound like it’s too thick, too muddy in the middle. But no question Diane Bush is a among the finest organists of the century.

Shame that Allen could not support this instrument by updating the failing tonal system. The problem of technology is that moves on so rapidly. No one uses a computer or watches a TV built in 1989. Although the tonal work on this instrument overseen by Larry Phelps was obviously the state of the area at the time. One major failing is that there are only divisional couplers and no sub or super octave couplers. However Allen will not fundamentally rebuild with modern , more reliable and supportable technology. This was the same scenario at the 5 manual MOS Organ at Westminster Pres inAlbany N.Y. A console that could last for 50 years is thrown away far before its time. Shame that Walker is replacing what should have been a better Allen.
@NorfolkSouthern-xt3xx5 жыл бұрын

anb740 who is the new owner? It was an amazing feat to get it reinstalled and repaired in a few weeks.
@anb7405 жыл бұрын
@William Hubert The Allen dealer in Charlotte. The organ itself had double audio on it. He supposedly reduced that down to one speaker per channel; hence the reason he sold off a bunch of the excess speakers. As far as I know, he has no intentions of reinstalling it anywhere and is keeping it as a showpiece of his studio. At 30 years old, it's still one of the better sounding Allens out there.
