Johor Bahru's gridlock grind

In Johor Bahru, 2-hour commutes have become the norm for many locals, with roads in and around the city gridlocked during peak hours. And so better transport links - in the form of buses, ferries, light rail, trams, and maybe even a high-speed rail station - cannot come soon enough for long-suffering locals, and especially if the state wants to emulate China’s manufacturing and tech hub Shenzhen. Sounds like KL as well :) a 15 min drive to office can extend to 2-3 hours during peak hours, no immigrations involved too

Too many vehicles causing traffic congestion. About 5,000 cars registered monthly. The narrow roads cannot cope with the heavy traffic. MRT cannot resolve the congestion as the connectivity is bad. So what's the solution. Keep tolerating for so many decades.

One way is to build townships outside KL where there are offices ,residential homes and facilities to minimise travelling. Why must everything be in a congested area in the city. Its getting more congested with so many high rise buildings erected. Where is the town planning?

Only solution is for a city to develop a biking(cycling) culture. It has to start with the citizens and govt demanding safe, separate biking lanes everywhere and allow bikes on LRTs and MRTs with the stations and coaches equipped for that. Once, that is done hike taxes on cars by 50% and I believe traffic will go down soon and the quality of life out in the city will go up. I know it's hard to get done since the status quo is in the interest of the oil lobby but this is the only sustainable way forward.

The infrastructure rot started when a sleepy PM came to power. He did not carry through the original causeway bridge and traffic lanes became bottled neck because the lanes were reduced. There is so much potential and source of income for the state and nation.

Around 15 years ago, I was involved in a survey to come up with a working paper for UPEN Johor to come up with a long term solution to tackle the expected rise in traffic in southern Johor. Many areas were identified and suggestions were made in our reports and papers. Unfortunately, I have not seen any major progress since, hence, the traffic situation has gotten even worse than expected.

If the trucks and lorries are diverted to the 2nd Link. The congestion on the narrow Causeway will be eased tremendously. And, it is nearer for goods from Malaysia to be consolidated at Tuas Logistic Hub and Tuas Port for export. There should be more express bus services made available between Jurong East MRT Station linking JB Sentral and Larkin Sentral using the 2nd Link. A longer distance but a shorter time to reach both ends of the destination.

Only way to alleviate traffic is to have a proper public transport infrastructure in place. Trains will help commuters to beat the traffic on roads and reach their destinations faster. This is an opportunity for Malaysia to plan for a proper, world-class subway system in JB that links to RTS - unlike the not-so-well-planned, mostly-above-ground LRT/MRT network in KL. It's not just the traffic. I stood for 2 hours in the JB immigration clearance, only to find that they had 2 queues sharing 1 counter! They think this will speed things up, but it actually makes things worse because the huge processing time added to each queue from sheer volume far outweighs any individual officer's inefficiency in a 1 queue to 1 counter situation. It's also an insult to the dignity of visitors.

@@desmondkwang5945 And what constitutes labour cost? You make it sound like employees are to blame and they are being enriched by their wages. Labour costs in turn are used to prop up the local mortgages and property prices. Don't forget high property prices affect businesses who have to pay high rentals too, hence affecting their margins and lowering the salaries they are able to offer employees. Singaporean are getting impoverished by this.

@@wshyangify I have revealed nothing new. Labor costs can account for as much as 70% of total business costs; this includes employee wages, benefits, payroll and other related taxes. Imported labour costs goes up as business has to increase the incentives for foreign labour to work in Singapore. Jams at the causeway is part of the costs of imported labour.

I travel between JB and Sg regularly. The ~300000 daily commuters crossing the 2 Customs checkpoints should be diverted away from JB Town Center to alleviate congestion in JB town. Build bus interchanges like those in Singapore (Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Bedok, Tampines, etc.) at Gelang Petah, Larkin, Kulai and Johor Jaya and link them by express buses to a few sister hubs in Singapore. For the sake of efficient connectivity, stop protecting bus companies by removing all restrictions on buses plying between these hubs. These 4 hubs are then fed by feeder buses from smaller towns from where Malaysians working in Singapore can stay. They do not need to live in relatively expensive JB town and contribute to the city's congestion. The small towns will also benefit economically from rental demand and consumption of daily necessities by these tenants. If the congestion still persist in JB town, then a fee like Singapore's Area Licensing Scheme (ALS) should be implemented for those who want to enjoy traveling into JB town. So only Singaporeans who have to pay tolls and Johoreans working in JB town should be driving on these currently congested roads. I'm sure this diversion of ~300000+ commuters out of JB town will complement the plans in place and those that are now in discussion between the SG and Malaysian governments. As a parting comment, I'm 65 and I hope in my lifetime, I can see the day when we do not need a passport to commute between Sg and Malaysia. With a new King, a new Sultan of Johor and a PM quite unlike Muhiddin, Najib and Mahathir, I'm optimistic they will make it happen for the sake of co-prosperity of the 2 peoples. God bless Malaysia and Singapore!

If you come into Singapore by plane, you can clear immigration in minutes; however, if you arrive through Johor it takes over 2 hours hours. About 165,000 passengers go through Singapire airport a day while 350,000 cross over from Malaysia. Why is the amount of people double while the wait time is around 20 times longer? If Singapore wanted a solution, they have the resources and would find one quickly. They don't want solution.
