I love masonry but the winter kills me every year. that and finding help. its hard to find people that want to show up to work and do the job. I have been in the industry 34 yrs and in business 20yrs. I love laying block and brick and thats been the only struggle . dec- march is a struggle in TN and people to show up.

I'm both a brick and stone mason. I was making $10.00 an hour back in 1975 and now the scale in Virginia is slightly over $20.00 an hour. In 1974 I had a beautiful apartment near the Va. Beach ocean front for $165.00 a month. A new pickup was between $2,000.00 and $3,500.00. My health insurance cost $40.00 a month. And so on. Today a new truck starts out at $30,000.00. The average home is around $300,000.00 and rent on a decent house in a safe neighborhood is between $1,500.00 to $3,000.00 a month. A single man living frugally can't make it on the wages a bricklayer makes today. Do yourself a favor, get a Federal civil service job. At entry levels you will gross more than a bricklayer and have much better benefits. The down side is you can't tell your supervisor to get f**ked!

New pickup was never 2000 in 1974. I bought an F-100 during the gas shortage it was 2900. I started as an apprentice in 1971 union in NYC 3.99 a hour plus benefits.

It's over 130 per hour cost with all labor burdens to put a bricklayer on the wall in NYC. You get 14 per hour in annuity and vacation alone.

@@PaddleDogC5 NYC ain't Virginia ha ha. 1974 F-100s were the worst Ford ever made. It was the first with new emission standards and that's what screwed them up. My engine blew up after three years so I put one in made in the 1960's and then it ran like hell.

@@PaddleDogC5 You are probably right about the price of the truck unless they cost more in NYC. I do remember my payment was $94.00 a month for 36 months. We could make a living in the 70s but here in Virginia you can't working by the hour. In 2009 the union agreed to a $2.00 an hour cut in pay and no raises for three years. We didn't get a raise until several years ago. Most of the best men left masonry because they couldn't afford to stay in. I believe New York State union masons make three times as much as in Va. Back in the 90's work was so plentiful that the contractors hired anyone that could pick up a trowel. I kept telling them at union meetings this was the time to demand livable wages. The rank and file were terrified to strike and we found out later the union rep was on the take from the contractors. Thankfully I remained in long enough to get a pension. A union is only as good as it's members and reps. I owned a jewelry store for awhile in the 80's then became a diamond salesman until the recession of 1994 wiped me out. No matter what I did I considered myself a mason first and till the day that I die. My oldest son is a small masonry contractor too.
