I somewhat recently got my sibling sts as a birthday gift. As such, I have been thinking a lot about what information a new player might find valuable. I figured I'd list some possible discussion topics that the video made me think of. When I was a newer player I used to think the self repair upgrade was good, until I thought about it and realized that it's just resting with extra steps. Terror is another upgrade that I thought was amazing because I didn't consider the significance of the fact that I was only playing it once. How valuable different upgrades are (of course they're all relative based on the situation of the run) is probably a useful topic for new players (there are also potentially undervalued upgrades such as defrag and biased cog, which are only "+1" but that 1 is used a LOT) Teaching people about the events is probably the most interesting thing to me, and Cursed Tome jumped out at me this run. It's *incredibly* difficult for an inexperienced player to understand the relative value of each of the books (other than maybe necronomicon, but new players could also think "no. curse too scary" I guess). They all have quite simple effects, but their value is fairly complicated. Sensory stone also caught my attention. I think I am correct in saying that the colorless pool has very high variance. It also takes longer to learn the value of colorless cards just because you see them less often than color cards. The value of a colorless card reward screen is potentially an interesting topic, especially when the event can incite the question "but why would I pay hp for that?"

I agree decisions on when and what to upgrade are super impactful, but tricky for many novice players to evaluate, including myself. Even the most basic of facts about the game is can be unapparent for new players. At the end of each turn you usually discard your hand *and draw 5 cards.* Not up to 5. With a cap of 10. Unsurprising given how fast it all happens. And yet details like these can determine whether you win or lose even at low ascension. The enemy is punishingly powerful compared to other strategy games. The tri slavers fight in this video is case in point.

Agree wholeheartedly with what you said, just gonna add that Self-Repair is probably one of the few ways to deal with Coffee Dripper if you can't rest and your deck is not good enough to not take damage yet.

@@diegocfq Even with coffee dripper I feel like you'd be better off upgrading something to make your deck take less damage instead of to heal more. Also there are lots of ways to deal with coffee dripper. Meal ticket, eternal feather, toy ornithoper to name a few.

I love watching and realizing how awful I am at this game lol. I can manage to lose a dead branch feel no pain corruption run, but jorbs gets 2 ball lightning and a coolheaded and decides he has what he needs to win the run lol

Very happy you checked the compendium first, though it didn't matter much for this character. Not having Bane/Catalyst/Corpse Explosion on Silent makes a much bigger difference in card rewards, I feel. Re:Defect being the trickiest character, I think Watcher is trickier if you try to play her like the other characters (which is something newer players will do more often).

I know that it can be pretty variable, especially at low ascension, but I’d appreciate if you talked about what you “need” for different elites/bosses. Like with the decision between biased cog and electrodynamics you were talking about Reptomancer scaring you without fully explaining why electrodynamics solved that. Or when you were talking about the slime boss asking you to do different things with damage and blocking. Most new players take a while to figure out what each act’s harder elite fights are and what a deck needs to respond to them. I feel like that’s knowledge that really fits the series and could provide something to talk about once you start steamrolling the end game. Been really enjoying the series so far!

Fully agree. I've known for a long time that I need to prepare for elites/bosses, but I've only recently started to figure out what I actually need to beat all of them. Some of them are simple (you need attacks for Gremlin Nob, you need decent burst damage turn 1 against Slavers etc) but some still remain to figure out even with me having beat A20.

He is doing that to a certain extent, but not much because that kind of play isn't required of him at a0. Which also means it's not especially helpful to new players playing on those low ascensions. I'm sure he intends to talk more about specific things like this when he gets to the ascension levels high enough to demand that kind of thinking (he's basically said that's the plan).

@@remydrouant49 I know he’s already talked a bit about it and that he’s not going further in depth because it’s not necessary at low ascension. I still think it’s a good topic for when he starts steam rolling low ascensions because it’s about concepts rather than his current deck and reward options. The numbers for damage, block, artifact charges, and other scaling obviously effect how the fights work at high ascension, but the underlying concept doesn’t change. You still need a good amount of attacks for Gremlin Nob, aoe or high burst damage for most of the act 2 elites, and time eater will punish you for relying on low cost cards no matter what ascension. At the very least it would help break the idea of building a deck that does 1 thing over an adaptable deck that can respond to a variety of situations.

this is a good series as a change of pace imo. you've kind of solved for the question of how useful information applicable at A0 is, by just speaking more generally and making reference to higher ascensions and such occasionally, how your decisions would differ... it's good btw, i have to credit you with helping me push ascensions in StS. i've got everyone to A7 now, and Watcher to A9, in large part from just absorbing your knowledge and experience by osmosis lol. i've got about 500 hours in the game now, but it probably would have taken me twice that without your videos. in particular, i like your analytical style of "what problems do i need to solve Right Now" (as opposed to "what kind of deck am i going to build"). you helped me shift my perspective from the theoretical and thematic, to the practical. very eye-opening in a game with such narrow margins and crunchy math

I was bored and thus I checked the app store for a good mobile game and stumbled upon STS. It seemed cool at first glance and so I wanted to give it a shot. I'm having very mixed feelings. Although the gameplay is fun and exiting and I saw myself spending hours with it, but I'm SO FRUSTRATED at the same time. I played with Ironclad and The Silent a few times and after some failures, I mamaged to "beat" the game (finishing 3rd act). BUT this character gives me so much agony while playing. I did 20 runs now AND I JUST CAN'T HAVE ONE SINGLE "WIN". I just don't get it. I tried so many things but everything I try just doesn't work. Wtf?!

Defect is still by far my worst class on A20... If I can't get an obscenely broken focus + frost orb engine going I just can't ever get strong enough. I die to the act 2 boss or elites like 90% of the time, lol.

More relevant != better. Lack of core surge and echo form don't affect your decision making that much, whereas the entire strategy of recycle down to an infinity goes out of the window if recycle is not available.

It was generated by Hello World so it didn't see any of the other Claws being used. Claw basically just looks for all other Claws it can find and increases their damage until the end of the fight, there isn't a "Claw counter", the information is baked into each individual card. You see him draw a Claw that has low damage after shuffling which is the exact same Claw he just generated and redrew it after shuffling.
