I always think Araki style of manga is "so much charisma it carry the whole thing". And I mean it in a good way. There are a lot of chaos and freedom in his manga, and a lot of time it doesn't make sense if you think about it. But instead of verify everything with logic and explaination, his character and drawing just pour out so much charisma and energy that you get hook and you don't care.

One thing I love about Yugo Kanno's score for the Part 3 anime onward is how each Jojo has their own theme that is unique and distinct, and yet they all feel cut from the same cloth. Jotaro’s theme does not have a pattern of five as he explains at 9:10. The notes aren’t all the same length, it’s just a syncopated rhythm. When the song starts the pattern begins in the middle of a measure, but if you start at the the downbeat (the F or the fourth note), the rhythm of each measure consists of a quarter note, eighth rest, quarter note, eighth note, then a quarter note. This measure would be constantly repeated. In other words, after the first three notes of the song, if you split the pattern into 8 beats, the notes are on beat 1 / / 4 / 6 7 / (Repeating back from beat 1)

I studied this music so much in order to write original music for JoJo! There is a thriving community of composers inspired by this franchise and anime music in general. Great to see that JoJo music is getting wider recognition! I hear the Jotaro theme as 4/4: the first line of the riff starts on the 4th beat and lands on the first beat of the next measure going up chromatically from the major 6th to the tonic. I absolute think that you should do a 2nd part of this sometime. The creator of the Manga, Hirohiko Araki is a HUGE Music Nerd, including naming most characters AND their Special Stand ability after Musicians and Albums, and Yugo Kanno, the composer for the series, knew this and delivered in kind to match the kind of wild, zany, barely contained chaos of the source material. His use of Jazz and Classical composing sensibilities and voicing married with Modern Rock and Synth production as well is absolute BRILLIANCE. It's absolutely epic and wild music befitting the amazing on screen adaptation of a manga series nearing it's 40th Birthday. Yes, JoJo has been a driving force in Japanese Pop Culture for almost Forty. Years.

You should check Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star)'s soundtrack. It is phenomenal! Its soundtrack is inspired by 70s and 80s disco/jazz/orchestral rock/big band music in which I believe you are really interested in, since the anime came out in the mid 80s along with an anime movie that came out in 1986. Fun fact, Fist of the North Star is THE anime that inspired many famous Shonen anime to pop up like Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and of course Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (hence the show is nick named the father of Action Shonen).

Some other songs I could see you enjoying are the following: Bloody Stream, Awaken (Pillar Men theme), Sono Chino Kioku (End of the World), Diamond is Unbreakable (Josuke’s Theme), Killer (Kira’s Theme), Crazy Noisy Bizarre Town, and finally Great Days. All of these are super solid, but if you can only do 4 of them then I would say do Bloody Stream, Killer (Kira’s theme), Diamond is Unbreakable (Josuke’s Theme), and Sono Chino Kioku. Bloody Stream is another wonderful Jazz opening, Killer is the theme to the main Villain of part 4 and I think it’s just so expertly done, Diamond is Unbreakable is the theme to the protagonist of part 4, it is reminiscent of Giorno’s theme in some of the feel but in my opinion I’ve always preferred Josuke’s theme, and Sono Chino Kioku is the spiritual successor to the first song you listened to “Sono Chino Sadame” so you may get enjoyment out of that too.

The way I hear it is that if the 4th note of the sequence is the end of the scale movement, then it’s on beat 1, with the 1st note on the “a” of beat 1, the 2nd on “e” of beat 2, and the 3rd on the “and” of beat 2. This repeats every 2 beats. In other words, if all notes are held until the next one: a dotted eighth note, a regular eighth note, a sixteenth note, and finally an eighth note.

You absolutely have to do a Part 2, the music only gets better from here!

If only this could've been like half an hour so he could play most of the song (especially the most known parts of the first 2)

Can we just get a full album of the little improvisations Charles does when explaining? I would listen to it all day xD

Can you maybe do a video on Randy Newman (similar to what you did to John Williams)and his work within Pixar films such as Monsters Inc and Toy Story, love his writing so much

I do want to say that on the bass for Giorno, instead of playing an Ab sometimes I play it as an A natural, which causes more of that good jazzy dissonance

Enjoyed this very much! There is still some great pieces from Jojos to uncover. Generally enjoy your Videogame/ Filmmusic breakdowns. Especially for a guy well versed in the arts is would recommend the soundtrack of Risk of Rain 2. Very interesting rhythmic and melodic things happening in there. I personally love the final piece "con lentitud poderosa" that gives you a rather dreadful vibe than a triumphant one as you walk up to the boss. Initially in this action packed game this was a sequence where you just walked and the music was the only content to enjoy. Also, small fun fact, all track names are rain inspired. Anyways, it is highly complex music id love to hear your opinion on! Thank you for making these videos!

I’m assuming the reason “stardust crusaders” is mostly using 5s is because the Stardust Crusaders is a group of 5 main characters
@pedrol50042 жыл бұрын
I think it's not using 5s and the stardust crusaders are a group of 6

I about threw my phone seeing this thumbnail. Touched on the big openings, would of been cool to dive into some SHINING JUSTICE but happy with what was presented. I may not be musically inclined but love watching these.

As somebody who wants to go into film and video game scoring your channel is the most helpful tool I have ever seen. Thank you!

I just wanna throw this out there regarding the slightly swung line of fours in five (lol that doesn't make sense but it does) leading up to 10:20 as a drummer the rhythm makes more sense when you feel the pulse in twos hitting on the one and three. which is weird cuz we usually feel a half time pulse at two and four, but in this instance that rhythm is easier for me to play if i push the up beats into the one and three. i hope that made sense, I'm not a theorist by any means and therefore my musical vocabulary isn't very broad. I just like hitting stuff when they make cool sounds. But rhythm is vital and I'd like to think i have a good feel for strange, un-quantized rhythms

I would be really interested to see your analyis on more songs through out jojo, there's lots of interesting harmonic content to accompany the themes and characters on screen

The way you analyze and deconstruct music is just pure ingenuity. You sir, are amazing.

As far as beautiful piano based soundtracks, A Silent Voice is a must. A lot of absolutely stunning ambient piano pieces.

I never thought about this until it was broken down but there's something vampiric about the piano solo in giornos theme. Like I can just imagine Dracula walking in while it's playing

If the anime soundtrack videos continue, i think made in abyss would be a great fit. Kevin Penkin’s work is one of a kind here and i think has a lot of interesting details that charles can go into depth with

For the "quadruplets" in Stardust Crusaders, I'm pretty sure the rhythm isn't a quintuplet with a tied pair of notes for that extra length, I think it's closer to a dotted eighth note, then a sixteenth note, then two eighth notes.

I honestly don’t even watch a lot of anime but the soundtrack to JOJOs definitely caught my attention since the first episode

I had that exact same struggle with stardust crusaders OST when playing on piano. I had to look it up for myself how it is actually performed on piano with only those notes in order to get it right.
