Today, desertification seriously threatens the world's biodiversity and is a pressing environmental concern. The productivity of the desert land begins to deteriorate on a chemical, physical, and biological level. Several causes impact the lands, including deforestation, excessive grazing, unsustainable farming methods, excessive soil exploitation, poverty, and climate change. One of the leading causes of desertification is deforestation.
India has created Biodiversity Action Plans to manage and conserve threatened flora and wildlife and address the causes and effects of biodiversity loss. The restoration of such land is a focus for many environmental organizations, particularly in dry terrain areas, to control desertification. The NGOs generally teach the local population about the dangers of deforestation and hire them to cultivate commercially beneficial plants that may multiply in desert areas.
Even in the scorching heat, jojoba has great potential for cultivation in desert ecosystems. With poor soil fertility, its nature can resist both hot summer and cold winter weather. Compared to other commercial crops like the olive plant, which has a solid tolerance to high salt levels in soil, the plant requires less water. Jojoba commercial plantations are thriving, especially in India's Thar Desert. Because it has great commercial uses and readily grows on desert terrain, it is also referred to as the ""gold of the desert"".
