Yes!! Thank you for saying it. People are so quick to pick on and laugh at people that feel that intensely. It causes people to try to hide their emotions, but I think this is the prefect movie to point out how being empathetic is a good thing and should be celebrated!❤

For people struggling with mental health this movie was something else. Not relating to the violence, but the feelings of a man shunned by all around him because of something he can't control. The relateability of his pain elevates this movie to another level.

Nonsense. The story is not reality. Animals do not have control. humans do; quit acting like people don't have control over their actions. No one is innocent or justified or sympathetic who chooses evil. If you want to be declared an animal lacking self control, then society should lock you up, take away all your human rights, and treat you like an animal. If you're so crazy as to lack sapient control, then you're an animal. These social predators who claim victimhood only make up excuses for pity but never want the consequences for those false performances. You want to play deranged without being treated deranged, play eccentric without being treated eccentric, play deviant without being treated deviant, play abnormal without being treated abnormal. Only fools think this movie is anything but well done 100% fiction, an absurdly engineered supposedly-sympathetic villain who in actually is just evil, just like his mother. Not a single state in the united states cuts meds from someone with severe likely-harmful mental conditions or even less, and probably no where else in the western (or most) first world countries. every state advertises constantly "if you have harmful thoughts of yourself or others, contact us and you'll get help immediately," and programs with rapid responses for those people. No one is failing these people but the mothers who (didn't) raise them and the people (not victims) themselves. Joker never once lost control. He intentionally and sanely chose vengeance because he blamed the world for the failings of himself and his mother.

It was more an adrenaline laugh than haha this is funny. The laboured exhale as he chuckles is a release of all the stress he had bottled up until now. In this moment he literally faced his demons, his bully, and unlike with his boss earlier in the movie he didn't have to roll over and be submissive and accept the humiliation. No one has power over arthur anymore. His laughter is genuine and excited rather than a painful coping mechanism.

The thing is, Arthur was not initially going on the TV show with the gun to kill Murray, he was going to kill himself live on TV as a statement, but once he got talking to Murray, he realized the true target, was actually Murray. The punch line of his "What do you get" was to kill himself but twisted it, in to ending with "You get what you deserve" and killing Murray, instead of himself.

I like the way the stairs symbolize his mental state and willpower to improve. In the beginning he was walking up the staircase slowly. Struggling because he is tired but still trying to go up. Later on he is descending. Happy and full of joy with each step he takes lower and lower down the stair case. Happily descending into madness and and shedding empathy and remorse with every step for the things he has done.

I cried at the beginning of this movie and when everyone was leaving the theater saying it was bad ass, I was so damn emotional and barely held it till I got home. I'm such a positive person and am usually the one helping others, but I was deeply clinically depressed for a while and everyone was sympathetic... until they got over it. They couldn't understand why I was so fucking sad and it became easier to hide it. I dragged myself out of that depression while still helping everyone else who were taking so much out of me. I know others have it worse but at my lowest I was crying under my bed as a full ass adult even as I had to help decorate for a birthday party. More drastic measures weren't even on the table because too many people counted on me. Anyway, this movie hit different and it's scary how some of us are one move away from being the good guy or the bad guy in the story. Everyone loved the chaos of civil war against the establishment and other themes that Joker touched. Realizing you're just one of the back ground characters that didn't help him, while also being HIM who's trying to hold it together, isn't nearly as "bad ass". I could only watch this once but it was an Amazing movie.

@Dimsrose
@Dimsrose Жыл бұрын
@@sarahholland2600 it was definitely work that I didn't need at the time. NOW I think the fact that I cared about them and they kept me busy, indirectly, helped me more than when they were actually trying to help. They knew what was happening at first, and tried to understand, but it was making them feel helpless and me feel worse in every way. I wasn't doing anything that was a cry for help either. I genuinely masked as best I could and only allowed myself to fall apart when I got home. I made the call to pretend I was fine and I don't hold anything against them. They were there in a different way at different times of my life. Mental health is just hell on you everyone that's around you. That being said, it was a crazy thing to do, and would be crushed if any friend tried to do that on their own. It wasn't fun.

Joker represents the perfect example of the fallen wizard/magician. Gandalf is wise because he has hidden knowledge of the world which he uses to guide and teach. I am clinically depressed, anxious, and schizophrenic. This movie destroyed me. Luckily I had a therapy session immediately after seeing it in the theater. Sometimes I laugh involuntarily when I feel like weeping, just like Joker. I feel like I am going insane when that happens because what I am doing is not accurately expressing how I feel. It is violating. So much of your commentary, maybe all of it, was spot on. Hannah got it right when she said Joker just wanted someone to "choose him". I honestly don't know how I ended up like this. I was a happy little kid who loved reading the funny pages in front of the fireplace, snuggled up with my stuffed zebra. But now I am mental ill, which is a modern leprosy. People literally avoid you like the plague. You are a "Debbie Downer". You tell someone honestly that you struggle with mental illness, especially schizophrenia, it's over. They never give you chance. They see you as The Villain, even though, I have no intention of becoming one. Beautiful film. The reality of it is heartbreaking.

So I've decided to soldier through it myself. It's been especially tough these past few years. The stairs symbolize the Joker's struggle to maintain a semblance of sanity. Throughout the whole movie, they show him slowly ascending the stairs. When he finally "descends" into madness, the scene became iconic. Also, This movie has a great critique of the media as an entity itself. The Joker was simply defending himself from an assault on the subway. The media blew things out of proportion by painting the narrative as an incident triggered by the struggle of the rich vs the poor. The media was just as responsible for the chaos that ensued at the end of the movie.

While the part about the media twisting the truth into something it is not, i agree with that, Arthur didnt just "simply" defend himself. That is the real tragic part. He shot the first two guys and i felt like "ok that is a fucked situation but i can understand this." He really did protect himself in that moment. Then he hunted the last dude down and executed him like a dog, and that is the part where the line blurs i feel. You can say well he dindt know what he was gonna do, maybe come back with a gun himself whatever. But that shit was dark, that was the point of no return Arthur. And like I said i can understand when people say its not that easy, to judge a situation like this, it wasnt him "simply" defending himself.

@@kairoskhan7536 I meant that the Joker's actions were not politically motivated. That's what I meant when I said he was simply reacting to a situation, (albeit reacting badly). My point is that the media ran with their own made-up narrative.

I feel you so much, Hannah. I felt my heart break for him basically from the very first second, and I just had the constant feeling of wanting to "protect/shield" him from the hardness of the world around him, and especially from the people in it. Being both highly sensitive and empathic feels like being blessed with a burden a lot of the times.

not sure if anyone has answered this yet but the symbolism of him getting inside the fridge was him trying to take his life and just end it all. @@ejfegarido7950 oh i wish you're doing well honey....i think you are doing good now from your comment i sense it.... The symbolisim part here its not about him trying to kill himself....noop he has a gun if we want to do it, putting himself in cold is like a hug from someone...he just waanna feel something else as a comfort....even if he harms himself....he want to freeze and suffer a real physical pain to get away from him psychological pain....i hope you get it. @@Idkexactly Thank you so much! I am somewhat in a better state now and actually gained genuine friends, although I can't deny some times things from the past still haunts me and I unconsciously do something, may it be mentally and physically to help me cope, some can be unhealthy like drowning myself with work, but I'm still in the process of changing that.... thank you for your analogy, I actually like it better than mine, actually not mine, I was also curious about what it symbolizes and that's what google showed me, now it shows that it can be interpreted in many ways, one says " Arthur simply wants to hide away from the world that keeps rejecting him. Hiding in a small, confined space can be comforting for Arthur compared to be surrounded by the open world full of people." pretty similar to your analogy:)

Joaquin Phoenix lost about 50 lbs for the role eating mainly steamed vegetables, and he did it quickly, not at a slow pace. You can plainly see the impact on how he looked in the movie, but it also had a psychological impact. He mentioned somewhere that because of his rapid weight loss (and lack of protein), he would feel like he was going mad. Weird coincidence considering that is something he needed to convey through his character.

there's a theory that all of the first movie was in arthur's head the whole time; and that the end asylum shot is really where he's been for the entirety. It'll be interesting to see if they go that route, or more what people expect; but they could do either for 'folie a deux', the sequel. super stoked. and wonderful reaction

Whenever clocks are displayed on screen they display the exact same time as when he's banging his head inside the asylum. It's a small detail but a constant within a chaotic mind can be telling. I think the sequel is supposed to have musical breaks with singing and dancing further implying everything is inside Arthur's head.

Joaquin Phoenix did an amazing job in this! I loved this movie! An actor who is so moving that they can make people cry for a villain is a master actor. I held on to every scene of this movie. I think he made the best joker so far. He was not some evil master mind, he was really mentally ill. The fact that there are people all over the world who struggle like this is terrifying and heartbreaking at the same time.

There is a theory that the entire film is him recounting the past to therapist in Arkham. That's why he looks so much older. He could never have seen the image of Batman with his parents when they died. He saw it in the paper or something. All the clocks never really change.
