It's just that Todd Philips decided to get his inspiration from "The killing Joke" joker, and Heath took his inspiration from the "Dark knights" joker, both did excellent with each version of the joker they had to portray.

Phoenix's joker is way way more impressive because it shows us many aspects of joker's personality, not just menacing: anger, depressed, abused, creepy, disturbing, bloodthirsty, twisted mind, smart (when he did crime) and most importantly, Phoenix's joker loves telling jokes and making ones, but all his jokes are dark and twisted, just like how he finds that Gotham burning and collapsing and bruce's parents shot dead are so funny. He's way deeper and more interesting than Ledger's joker who is nothing but a terrorist who tries too hard to be an idea and force his philosophy down the throats of the ppl in Gotham, and of course he did all that by threatening to kill harmless people and their loved ones just like a good stereotype terrorist we see everyday on the news, nothing more. Look up “tommy wiseau ledger joker’s impersonation” on youtube. Tommy is a very bad actor but his impersonation is just as good as the original. It shows you how overrated Ledger’s joker was. The reason he was so intimidating is mostly because of his makeup.

TheAnhphuong92 I think that today, over a decade later, being aware of mental illnesses has become a pretty big thing. Back in the early/ mid 2000s that was still something people (especially Hollywood) didn’t want to talk about. The 2019 Joker puts a whole new perspective to the joker ... his backstory, that is. And you’re right: that very aspect Joaquin impersonates much better than Ledger. But the Dark Knight wasn’t ABOUT the joker. He was, you know, the bad guy. He was supposed to be hated. Joaquin Phoenix is the anti-hero, but you can get behind his actions because of the way it is portrayed. I think they both aced it. But these are two completely different stories. While the Dark Night Movies show the joker being his sick terrorist self, The 2019 Joker makes us realize what brought him to this point. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

And I prefer this wicked Gotham City, than the utopic Gotham from Nolan´s trilogy in where the citizens are kind hearted people.... Even the mob was portrayed as "honorable"🤦‍♂️😒 I liked Nolan´s Batman, but his highly moralistic crap ruined some parts for me. Gotham City is supposed to be like it´s shown in "JOKER" a chaotic city full of morally horrible people, like the "Detroit" from The Crow.... for example. Another Gotham I love is the Gotham from the Tv Show called "GOTHAM" similar to the one in "JOKER"

The joker is only a villain until you learn his story. Then he becomes a person. I think this is something that we can carry into our everyday lives. I read this article about how a kid brought a gun to school. His teacher found out and instead of wrestling him to the ground he took the gun and hugged him till the police came. The moral is hurting people will hurt other people. There was something just so profound about that. This is why we have to stop blaming inanimate objects. Guns don't kill. People do. It's nice to see a proper movie that deals with the root of our problems, mental health. It's inevitably how we treat others that will bring about change. The media promotes fear, panic, blame, and mob mentality, but we need self responsibility.
