On experiencing a guided tour through the south of Gambia, we stopped at a little village called Berending in the Yundum area, where the local people performed a traditional dance for our group. Intentionally of course, they're getting money for it, even asking for tips through the additional basket, but it was fun to experience a real local Jola act in a village outside. The actual village even doesn't exist on the map and contains only 6 small compounds. Jola cultural dance are characterized by the use of only drums during the whole act. Clothing for the women seems partially sponsored by Dutch companies, but the act looks nice. It's more difficult than you think. I stopped recording when we as tourists had to join the dancing. Have fun watching this act and take a look at my other African videos on this channel.
------

Almost all that you write in your introductory text is incorrect. The Berending in your video is in the area of Gunjur and Brikama, which is far from Yundum. The tour operators are making the money, not the women and are NOT paying the women. In fact, before your busses take you to your next tourist site, women's club has to give tips and share the money with the drivers or they will not bring you tourists back. The arrangement is that the tour operators bring the tourist buss at around 11 every morning and some women from the club and their drummers perform for you tourists. The only money the women get is the tips that the tourists might be kind enough to offer. The women have to leave their daily labours, like washing clothes, tending their gardens, and preparing their family's food. They do this because of extreme need and poverty. The actual village of course EXISTS and comprises several ethnic groups, incl. Jola, Fula, Karoninka, Mandinka, Manjako and Ballanta. There are also about 50 Europeans living there. The population is between 2000 and 3000, with about 500 houses. There are 2 preschools, 2 primary schools and one lower secondary school. There are several mosques and at least one church. You should apologize to us and correct your misinformation.

I can only assume that you have not been to Igboland. Go and look at the wide variety of traditional Igbo dancing and point out any similarities. The rhythm the steps, the instruments are entirely different. Go and look at any basic ogene dance... nothing like it at all. We are all different.

Any City I went to I would sign a drum circle drum Circle Detroit Chicago San Francisco LA New Orleans Atlanta Miami Etc. We black people maintain that rhythm of Africa in are soul

This dance they are doing is mix of different Jola and Karonika dancing. The Jolas in Berending like the woman are singing, come mostly from Thonk-a-sil, but also from Jattuk, Mandegan, Molump, Karon, Tenduk, and Gikotch, all of which are in Casamance. The Jola dialect that they speak in Berending is a mix of Jola dialects from all these villages and in fact has som Mandinka in it. It is true that the drumming is like Karonika drumming used in memorial services for dead relatives.
