The difference is that Jolibee has incredible customer evangelism. For McDonald's, Americans aren't walking around introducing it. But I have multiple times been introduced to Jolibee by Filipino friends - the customers actively recruit.

I'm not Filipino, but I've found Jollibee to be fascinating since I found out about the chain back in 2020. To an American like me, the menu feels like a mishmash of different familiar items while still doing enough of their own thing to not get lost in the sea of other fast-food chains. If one happens to open in my area, I would definitely love to go and check it out for myself since there are some items that I find myself getting excited to try.

@@elitedangeroustheworldnext9086the reason why its so beloved is because its a national icon. it is as tied to the cultural zeitgeist like mcdonalds/white castle in the us. there's this phenomenon where everything filipino gets revered like hell, especially if they become internationally known. it's not an exclusive filipino thing because india, brazil and indonesia has this too but it's slightly different to american eagle pride. not all filipino food are influenced by the americans, it just so happens that the majority of the best selling items happen to be "american" food.* *Adobo rice (only available in the US) and palabok are one of the notable exceptions. The Spaghetti is indeed quite different from other options, but the really unique item has to be the Palabok. Interestingly, Jollibee also see a considerably success at Vietnam, with not entirely relying on Filipino identity. Only Chickenjoy and Jolly Spaghetti are retained on Jollibee Vietnam menu, while the rest of Filipino menu that might largely unknown among Vietnamese are not offered. Jollibee at Vietnam also has slightly different approach, by placed greater emphasises on fried chicken (Understandably business decision, since Vietnam is infamously well known for being hostile on burger chain. McDonald's and Burger King, for example, are barely have success at Vietnam). Together with KFC and Lotteria, Jollibee become one of most successful fast food chain in Vietnam. Based on these fact, I'm pretty sure Jollibee can expanding into another country without heavily relying on Filipino identity.

I literally just had Jollibee for the first time yesterday for lunch! I went cause my friend tried it for the first time a coupe days ago and I was so interested to partake myself. I'm so glad I stopped by yesterday cause I really enjoyed it. I wanted to try so many things, but I decided to keep simple with a 2 piece chicken with 2 sides (rice and mashed potatoes). Pouring some of that magical gravy in the white steamed rice alone is enough for me to come back. I cant wait to be back next weekend to try an other menu item! By the way, I live down here in Houston, Texas. Something that had me in shock was just how many Filipino's I saw inside the restaurant and that kept coming in. For a moment I thought...wait a minute am I am the only Mexican in here and it was so fun to feel like that. Jolibee has super support from Filipinos it's amazing. Jollibee has gone massively downhill in Canada already mainly due to a change in their spicy chicken recipe. It used to be this amazing powder that had a unique flavour, but then they changed it to injecting an orange marinade inside the chicken which I found to sometimes dry out the chicken. I was absolutely gutted when I tried the new version. I’m still convinced their old spicy chicken recipe would’ve easily taken over a the uncontested best fried chicken chain. Now I’m indifferent to going there or Popeyes, but I used to make the 30-40 minute drive out to Jollibee despite there being Popeyes + Church’s + Mary Browns all within a 5 minute radius of me. The peach mango pie and pineapple quenchers are still amazing though.

It’s remarkable how much the Filipino immigrant community plays a role in propping up Jollibee in the US. My family’s been pretty stingy on expenses in general, but when it comes to Jollibee, spending 200+ dollars is the norm (a large part of that is bringing it back to Upstate NY) Besides that anecdote, Jollibee’s upbringing in the US is fairly unique, where any non-American chain usually phases out. - Fairly unique menu items from a country where their cuisine are often overlooked, meaning that American competitors are often disinterested in Americanizing Filipino dishes (Panda Express or Taco Bell for Chinese/Mexican food for example) - Having a high immigrant population fairly spread out the US (most often or not due to working visas) - Continuing immigration from the Philippines, Jollibees is automatically the “Home away from Home”

One of the most genius thing Jolibee has ever done in my opinion is how you can smell their chicken some distance from the store. They do this on purpose to activate peoples appetite due to its mouthwatering smell and get them to eat on their stores. They also strategically place some of their stores on bus/transportation stops so you can smell jolibee chikenjoy as soon as you come down from the vehicle. Genius!

"Mang Inasal" is pronounced more like "mung eena sal" One thing that's very important to recognize that I feel like wasn't taken a proper look at isn't just that they aim for neighborhoods with a larger amount of Filipinos, but that a very large chunk of the Filipino economy is held up by OFWs, Overseas Filipino Workers. Thanks to the Philippines having a large export of OFWs (majority seafarers and nurses, iirc) and because of the strong cultural emphasis on family, Jollibee rakes in a lot of Filipinos who have a hard time finding food from home that is also incredibly recognizable, especially since most other kinds of Filipino food are more involved with their prep compared to a fast food chain like Jollibee modeled after American fast food.

After getting home from work I was unsure what I wanted for dinner and this video by @CompanyMan popped into my feed. I never heard of Jollibee so I was intrigued to learn more even after dating a Filipina. I then learned I was one of the lucky US Residents who had one less than 15 minutes away from me so decided it's what I should get for dinner. I had their 3 Chicken platter (two normal and one spicy) with two sides and their peach mango pie. The chicken by itself was good and competitive to other known US brands. To be honest, I didn't really taste the difference between normal and spicy though and I am wimp when it comes to spicy foods. What really sets Jollibee apart is their gravy. I was not expecting it to go well with the chicken and french fries, but it turned the meal into a an excellent one for the value. I also enjoyed the Peach Mango Pie for dessert. I will go back in the future and try their pasta or burger next time. Thanks Company Man for getting me to try a new restaurant and deciding my dinner tonight!

I tried Jollibee when I was on holiday in Edinburgh, Scotland. Aside from very poor service (ended up waiting 15 minutes for a pre-prepared order) the food was amazing, I've been wanting one to open up in the Brighton area ever since. The spicy fried chicken is great, and their loaded fries are really good with the spring onion and sriracha mayo. I definitely think they have the appeal to become one of the big fast food players if they can keep the quality of their food up. Speaking in terms of the UK, we only have one large chain for fried chicken which is KFC, so there is definitely room in the market for another. I also think their diverse menu is a huge bonus, since the only places that do burgers and fried chicken tend to be low quality takeouts. I think that nowadays westerners are far more open to foods from other ethnicities than they used to be, like no one would believe 20 years ago that taco bell would be becoming one of the UK's most popular fast food restaurant chains. I'm not surprised that they're mainly looking at America, but the UK seems like it'd be a really strong market for them given the large south asian population and communities in the country, I feel like it'd be an easier and more hospitable market than the US.

The Jollibee near me here in Edison, NJ sux. When they opened it was OK but haven't been back there in many months. After the pandemic they still had the inside dining area closed, so you could only order online or in the drive-thru which had a line so long the police had to come and make sure the last person in line wouldn't get hit by a car zooming by since the line would take up the right lane of route 1. Then they stopped taking online orders, the app works but when you go to checkout it says "Sorry, online ordering for this location isn't available." 🤷🏻‍♂️ Then they closed the drive-thru. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Now you can go inside to order because there is no other way to order. Last couple times I ordered the Chickenjoy it was undercooked and I had to finish it in my air fryer at home. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also, they charge you white meat prices but they don't use any breasts. Now if I want fried chicken I go to Popeyes. Never had an issue, I don't think I'll be going back to Jollibee unless they have those seasonal jack fruit pies, I forgot what they're called.

Went to Edinburgh two months ago and tried Jollibee, wasn’t as good as I was expecting it to be. Heard from my friends that it isn’t the best Jollibee location they’ve gone to either. Loads of stuff I was looking forward to on the menu wasn’t there like the yum burger and the hotdog and the burger steak with rice. So glad they had the peach mango pie tho. The chicken itself wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best I’d had from a Jollibee either. The service when I went was alright, only thing that bugged me was the rowdy group of teenagers sat at the table next to us. It was cool that the seating downstairs had chargers on the table too. I haven’t gone to the Jollibee in london but people have said it’s much better than the one Edinburgh. The one in Milan is much nicer too- they had the aloha burger and it was class. Would love to go to America and try the Jollibees there. Apparently the menus in the US have different items like the adobo rice that doesn’t exist on the menu in the Philippines Am filipino myself & had just gone on a holiday to the Philippines a few months prior to that so obv the OG jollibee still reigns king in my mind, so much cheaper too. Hope they open a Jollibee here in Dublin sometime soon. I keep craving it lol

They opened one in Orlando, and I couldn't wait to try something new. It's the first time I've had 'spicy' fried chicken that was actually SPICY. It was great! The only thing I saw as a negative was that they don't make their spicy chicken sandwich with their spicy fried chicken coating. They use their regular chicken patty and add siracha mayo and jalapenos.

I visited Arizona's first Jolibee just a couple weeks ago with a friend of mine who insisted we try it as it's integral to her Filipino culture, and it did NOT disappoint! I had the full experience and tried their ChickenJoy, Burger Steak, Jolly Spaghetti and Peach Mango Pie! I was delighted by the flavors and was really surprised by how sweet the spaghetti was. Hands down, the ChickenJoy really knocked it out of the park and would be a solid reccomendation for anyone wanting to try it for the first time! I’m Canadian, born and raised; and my nesting partner is Cambodian - we’re up in North York one time and she’s like ‘omigosh babe let’s go to Jolibee’s’, and of course I’m just like ‘…what the heck’s a Jolibee’s’ - she says it’s fried chicken and spaghetti, I’m like ‘okay that’s a bizarre combination of things to sell’, but we get there and the line is practically halfway out the door, easily as popular as the Chick-Fil-A’s… (which, us being lesbians, aren’t exactly fans of) I gotta say, I didn’t know what to expect but the video asks if it’s good enough to compete with KFC or Popeye’s - honestly it *far* exceeds the quality even for the value compared to both of them, and while I don’t eat at Chick-Fil-A it does seem to be just as popular. If you eat meat and want to try something new or just better quality, I highly suggest giving Jolibee’s a go. The chicken is fantastic and I even liked the little mashed potato side. :)

for anyone trying out jollibee for the first time after seeing this video, their burger is quite the umami-bomb. The yumburger is quite a good entry point but it could leave you asking for more, but if your area carries the Champ (their quarter pound burger) it could be quite overwhelming. I suggest asking for the cheesy yumburger (their regular ol cheese burger) with an additional patty. I’ve been ordering this combo withe fries on the side for years. It goes perfectly with rootbeer too if any of ya’ll are into it.

Speaking for the rest of the locals here as they're making the buzz abroad: They're chickening out on the food quality here. Tiny chickens, little pasta, numbered fries, half filled sundaes, and so on. A lot of us can't just let go of Jollibee because of the sentimental value that it holds for many of us. Ja'bee was built around the Filipino taste. It is ironic how they wear Filipino identity on their cheek but are not embodying the common Filipino proverb of remembering where you came from, otherwise, they'd never reach the destination they are right now.

As a Filipino, I am quite happy that Jollibee is getting international recognition. However, I must admit that I am dismayed since their prices have gone up considerably. As a local growing up in the 90s, all kinds of people from all walks of life would dine in Jollibee. Now though, it's tough for someone like me who I consider to be in the middle class to comfortably afford to eat there at a whim. I remember growing up, we'd dine there 3 or 4 times a week. The prices were very accessible back then. Now though, it's rather tough for a lower-income family to eat at Jobi. It is now somewhat reserved for more special occasions. I know, inflation and all. Just sucks that it is now out of reach for most of us.

Additional information that may be of interest: Regarding the goal of the company, it’s told to us employees as the “vision” that we strive towards while following JFC values. I can also very much confirm that Jollibee is aggressively expanding as they are continuously opening new locations. For example, in Texas, they recently opened their 6th location there (Sometime in December 2023 if I recall correctly) and they have already been working on their 7th location in Texas. There was also a promo recently to celebrate the 100th Jollibee store opening in the US (although we have not been told the location yet).

I was really interested in this place because I only heard about it a couple years ago and the menu options seemed really crazy but also intriguing. I didn’t think I would try the Pineapple quencher because I thought it was going to be some generic pineapple drink from concentrate but it was exceptional. By far my favorite thing on the menu.. it reminded me of Hawaii. The chicken was also really good and the Mango Peach pie was soo good. You can actually taste the peach in it and it was FILLED. The only thing I wouldn’t necessarily recommend is the spaghetti but if you want to go right ahead. I’m just not partial to the contents or the sweetness of it. I'm in Southern California and have been eating Jollibee for 15+ years. That said, it's tricky to predict how it will play in the United States in general. They likely see an opening with the combined retraction of KFC stateside and the growth of Popeyes restaurants. The problem, I think, is that it will need to develop its own unique identity outside of that if it wants to succeed because it just isn't competing with Popeye's too well on quality of the product. I don't believe spaghetti is enough to differentiate itself, and it is viewed by most Americans as a cheap at-home staple. And the burgers are not known to be lifechanging. Here in CA, that's a hypercompetitive market that never took notice of an especially quality burger in Jollibee. In order to succeed, Jollibee should lean into its interesting international backstory and introduce items that might surprise customers a little more than their standard fare in appearance and taste profile.

Jollibee opened in my city a few years ago. Their fried chicken is awesome and I find it lasts longer than other brands when you do a takeout bucket (doesnt get soggy, stays hotter longer). The spicy fried chicken is especially good. The spaghetti... it must he an acquired taste. I was told it was a must try but yeah, it's something I can just make at home but wouldnt.

To those who don't know: Mang Inasal is actually fire! "Inasal" is one of the best chicken dishes out there! I'm not sure if there are even Mang Inasal's here in the US and I actually would love to have one. I literally went to Iloilo city in the PI to eat at their very 1st store and also went to Bacolod city where the dish started.

I can attest that the Black Forest cake from Red Ribbon is delicious and the flavor profile is forever ingrained in my mind. Their Chocolate Mousse and Sansrival are pretty great too. That being said, I just moved to North Am, and I can tell you that the quality of the Chickenjoy here is better and more consistent than the one we have back home, likely because this is not as price sensitive a market and they can pay for better ingredients, but also because fewer branches means they're really tight on the quality control up here. A notable change is their pineapple juice, which is much less strong in taste to what Philippine pineapple juice is like--so it tells me that Jollibee is adjusting the recipe to cater to the country it's in. If you haven't had it yet, I think you'll have a good time when you do. And either way, it makes for great content that will instantly be recommended by the algorithm to all Filipinos everywhere and you'll get a boost from that. Enjoy, haha.

I used to live in the San Jose area and that was my first exposure to Jolibee. I love Filipino food and had heard great things about Jollibee. That chicken certainly sparks joy. It is definitely a contender against major fried chicken chain. Plus I also sparked my love of halo halo. The definitely have made savvy business decisions with their acquisitions. Jolibee should remain the flagship brand and has the potential for broad based appeal. I hope we get a location in the Denver area soon.

Not Filipino, but my wife is. I’d love to see Jollibee open up some locations here in central Ohio. Wendy’s was founded and is headquartered here and a lot of fast food companies use us as a test market for new products. Jollybee is always delicious whenever we are visiting the Philippines (for being fast food that is) and is more Americanized types of foods vs Filipino type food and I think they could do really well here across the entire country

I didn't know what they were at first until a comparison content creator was trying Jollibee! I'd passed by the one in Daly City a number of times not stopping in. When I did I tried their chicken box and everything was WONDERFUL including the hot gravy that came with it and the warm peach pie! The chicken to me had more of a tempura fry, but not greasy! I'm definitely going back to try more menu items! Also the only one nearest to me is South San Francisco and this town is also a large Filipino community! I just wish the other popular chain Goldilocks Bakeries was closer as well!

As an American who visited the Philippines a couple of months ago, it is pretty big over there. Where I stayed, they had a shopping mall down the street with a giant Jollibee sign, and I saw lots of locations around Quezon City/Manila. As for the restaurant itself, I'd say it's an acquired taste. There was a distinct smell when I went in that's hard to describe, but I wasn't that big of a fan of. I got some kind of chicken sandwich, and it tasted a lot different than the standard American-style chicken sandwiches; there was this strange sauce on the sandwich, kind of like mayonnaise I guess, that again tasted kind of strange. Like I said, I guess you get used to it, but I was okay with only going once. Glad to hear they're doing well, though!

At least at the Jollibees near me (I'm in Southern California), they have been expanding for further Filipino tastes. They sell palabok and adobo rice in addition to the standard spaghetti and chicken. It's hard to say they will remain competitive otherwise since their chicken is only okay at best when compared to the many other local fried chicken joints.

I work not too far from the only Jollibee here in Arizona, which is in Chandler. I grew up back east, and Filipino restaurants were hard to come by where I lived. So trying Jollibee for the first time was interesting, but overall, I’ve warmed up to it. It doesn’t taste instantly prepared and microwaved like many of our fast food spots in the states, and of course, I love being able to enjoy the food of another country so conveniently in general. I think the US as a whole will feel the same way.

There is a Jollibee near me (conveniently located next to Seafood City at Southcenter mall) and it is always packed with a long line. I've not ever tried it myself because of the lines but based on that alone I'd say that demand is pretty high and the Seattle area could easily support more than the 2 stores it currently has. But the fast food market here is very competitive with several large local chains on top of the national ones so their current cautious approach is probably the best one.
