Jolt - Commander Breakdown - Kelsien, the Plague (Deck Tech)

I built Kelsien with an untap theme and also cards that deal more dmg like Torbran. Seems to work out really well! Also if you run Teysa Karlov you can double the experience counter trigger on a creature death. Great deck Jolt!

I went for the deathtouch themed deck. I completely overlooked the sword of truth and justice in all my research, looking at other decks and looking to add deathtouch shenannigans whilst scratching my head at Daxos and Kalemne. A great addition to my deck. Thanks!

I just found out about this commander and I'm looking at going experience counter focused, more proliferate cards, which we've gotten a lot more of sense this came out, as well as having lots of other creatures that want you to have experience counters as well, stuff like Othari, things that can be a threat on their own in case Kel keeps getting taken out over and over.

Goblin Sharpshooter. Give it Deathtouch, have it tap do do 1 damage and kill a creature. Give Kelsien thornbite staff. Have Kelsien ping a creature first, then kill it with Sharpshooter, Kelsien gets a counter, untap both, due to Sharpshooter ability and staff, repeat. Swing in with buffed Kelsien for big damage.

This commander caught my eye more than all the others. His art is incredible and by god that flavor text is just the right amount of edgy. Was super stoked to build him but I've never built a Mardu commander nor a voltron style commander. You have done an excellent job of presenting a framework for the deck without just laying it all out there and kudos to you for that. Great deck tech! I was kinda disappointed in the with the colors of Kelsien tho. Would be a lot of fun to be able to run any of the other commanders that work with experience counters in the deck if it made sense.

My build is going to be built around proliferate and wither, wither feels flavorful with "the plague" and it still works with deathtouch. Maybe throw in a small bit of infect for a emergency finisher, maybe not dedicated infect lol

You see, i went for an Assassin tribal deck. Most the assassin have when * etb destroy a creature that was dealt dmg to this turn. So you ping, and cast an assassin. Scareblade elite can destroy even more creature by removing your assassins from the grave, so you reuse them one last time.

If you want to take down bigger prey sometimes needletooth raptor can be a middle damage. Bumping up that 1 damage to 5 damage.

im making this commander except i dont have the money for the planeswalker package so im running a pillowfort package flavor wise it will represent him sitting in the tree infect to represent poison tip arrows i mean he is an assassin and untap package to represent how he is always ready for anything death touch package to represent how deadly he is

What about Kalemne? Putting a bunch of equipment on a double striker that's going to come down with all the buffs from Kelsien's experience counters already can be a good back up plan in case Kelsien gets destroyed

I'd prefer an equipment that would grant Kelsien's abilities to commanders, instead of Kelsien himself. That'd add some variation to how each of the EXP commanders play their game, and helps out Kalemne more since she's of the weaker color combo but most attuned with equipments.

I’ve been waiting on this one! I’m definitely going to build him and wanted to go a bit more of a go wide kind of strategy with Daxos the Returned as a back up commander. Do you think akroan horse would be good for this deck? Since it gives your opponents 1/1s to shoot and gives you one you can keep. Also love these intros!

Akroan horse is good, and also my build was going to center around wither and -1 counters. Wither still works with deathtouch too and I feel like its flavorful with "the plague" also proliferate in here for the counters and maybe a touch of infect for a surprise kill.

I would like him better if his ability would deal 1 dmg for each exp counter you have. That +1/+1 boost is really unflavorfull

I can see why WotC doesn't want that. Once you get 3+ pts you'd pretty much kill most creatures on the field and gain extra exp each time, repeatedly if you equipped him with deathtouch and Thornbite Staff, it'd be an avalanche after certain point where no one could safely put a creature into play. We could argue this being Mardu style control, but it's so easy to set up it might become troubling for more casual tables (where creatures still matter) What I'm hoping for, though, is an equipment that would grant Kelsien's abilities to commanders, instead of Kelsien himself. @@Cyberium yeah he would definitely be a strong commander but I don't think he would be op. He still dies to removal. But even with that ability he would still be a lower threat than a Kaalia. Right now he seems really lackluster imo

@@Arisawa_Heavy_Ind "Dies to removal" is a valid but unconcerning argument though. Everything can die to removals, including Kaalia. The goal of course isn't trying to make any legend OP, but to have some variation besides "getting bigger", and Kaalia is definitely not a good standard in making new legends. ^_^ If anything, a 2+ damage ping would at least keep Kaalia from attacking easily.

It certainly can! Now. It may not win every single game. But the core gameplay of the deck will be very rewarding for you to pilot.

First
