I think he did a good call from what he could see, from his point of view there was no way to see that hand go off the base during first tag, and there would be no reason to think the hand would come off, why would you do that?
@rickl.4612 жыл бұрын
@@RenaxTM91 exactly. And the ump was in a proper field position. He wasn't being lazy and not getting in position--it was just an instance of a play unfolding unpredictably and the ump can't have a perfect view every time. I think the umps might have looked at the replay if the Indians said, "The lead runner was off the base when he was tagged, and should have been called out, and that would negate the out call on the trail runner."

The umpire did a shitty job of this. I was at this game and close to the play and the third base umpire stared down Hernandez on the play and never watched what happened to the lead runner. I wasn't at the game but it seems like the ump handled this well. From his angle he saw two runners on one base, made the right call for that situation, then saw a runner get tagged while off the base. Both are very reasonable things to believe based on his angle
@rickl.4612 жыл бұрын
I can't speak to if the third base ump declined help from the home plate ump. But at 1:14 in the video, the third base ump is clearly watching the play. He assumed there were two runners occupying the base because he couldn't see the lead runner take his hand off the bag; so he made the proper call under the circumstances. I'd be interested to know what the home plate ump did in terms of offering help. Could you hear if the home plate ump said something like "the lead runner should have been called out before the trail runner"?

I was actually at this game sitting in the deck above third base. It was something I had never seen before and I remember my family searched up the rules. However, we did not get the detailed video and explanation that you provided. We figured Herandez was out because he was the trailing runner. We never saw a replay of the leading runner getting tagged and the trailing one not. There truly was an air of confusion on what exactly happened. In the end, both were still called out and of course, we were all upset and then cheered on Tito after he gives a verbal beatdown to the ump once getting ejected. Luckily it didn't matter though with that walk-off. All in all, I'd say it was one of the best games I've been to. It was dollar dog night and we got to watch the fireworks afterward.

This is on Cleveland. Can't blame the ump on this one -- he called the right runner out -- then saw the guy who was on third take his hand off the base. Yes, he got it wrong -- but understandably. And only because the guy on third messed up by taking his hand off the bag.
@wrigheri3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct, both runners should have maintained contact with the bag until the play was called dead and the umpire explicitly told them which one was out.
@1414-n5y3 жыл бұрын
yup. the trailing runner is 100% safe. the lead on runner was safe, but then took his hand of the bag (ump didnt see it) . they both occupy(he thinks) so the call is (both out.) in reality, the trailing runner NEVER left the bag , NOR did the base runners do anything illegal. the ref called the second guy out due to illegal base running. which is reviewable and wrong!

@@1414-n5y Trail runner is out. Catcher tags 3rd base runner but is in contact with bag. After catcher takes glove off of him to tag the runner from 2nd that is when he takes his hand off the base. So the lead runner is still entitled to 3rd and the runner from 2nd is out.

Tbh in real time that's a really great job by the ump. I know he was wrong but in real time with such a cluster fuck he did really well and you can't really ask more of him. Too bad it didn't go to review to make it right though.

Rule 6.01a1 states the runner gets the bag they were pushed off of. The fielder obviously pushed him off with the tag if you look close enough. The runner gets 3rd and the runner from 2nd is out. The runner DID leave the area because the umpire called him out on a second tag when he was standing up after being pushed off the bag. He has every right to be pissed at the umpire. The home plate umpire should be giving the 3rd base guy help on the play and the runner goes back to 3rd...

@@Ng1Brad Watch it slowly. He is planted before the tag. The tag 100% pushed him off. How else does he just randomly get pushed a foot off the bag?
@zethroth00773 жыл бұрын
@@rileyesmay he didn’t pushed him. Unless number 23 is made out of paper there’s no way in hell Salvador touched him hard enough to throw him off the base like that. It was the momentum of him sliding back he lost grip of the bag. He didn’t get pushed off.

Goofy angle on the slide because 3rd baseman was in a place he can't be. He wasn't getting off the base on purpose.
