My goodness, Vangelis handles his Yamaha CS 80 so well. Anderson's voice is masterful and fascinating, as always. When will Vangelis' Spiral album be released? I would also recommend Vangelis & Irene Papas. ''O! Gliki Mou Ear''....Oh, My Sweet Springtime. has done so many collaborations with other musicians that it is almost impossible to list them all.

YES! The beginning of this rabbit hole. You’ve already heard some of their earlier collabs (“Heaven & Hell”), and finally they got their first album off the ground. They released four albums (five if you count the “Best Of” collection), the first three released in the U.S. The fourth, “Page Of Life,” wasn’t released here at first for some reason; Jon rearranged and re-released it later which caused tension between the two. Vangelis’ sounds here are reminiscent of his recent release “China,” which is definitely a must-listen. He’s clearly toying a lot with the Yamaha CS-80 and what it can do… it peaks a couple years later on the ‘Blade Runner’ soundtrack (over 4 hours of material). And as you’d said here, much of what V does is spontaneous and improvised on the spot. Jon comes in and does the same with his vocals. Hopefully you’ll continue with J&V, there’s a lot more. And it gets better.

Vangelis told Jon not to release the album as he felt it wasn't good enough for release. Jon did it anyway! They hadn't spoken since.

I thought it was such a shame that you didn't just keep listening... Even though it's not a concept album and the songs don't build on each other in terms of content, the album as a whole builds up such a beautiful arc of tension that you obviously don't get if you listen to the songs individually. I really learned to love Jon and Vangelis' albums because I always listened to them in their entirety. But of course I was still very happy that you gave them another chance ;-)

I know you didn’t care for the first half of Friends of Mr Cairo but the title track is so important…Quincy Jones said it was an inspiration for Billie Jean. He used so much of Jon and Vangelis’s music for inspiration, he even covered State of Independence for Donna Summer

I believe that this was purely meant to be an introduction piece for the album. I don't know many Jon & Vangelis tracks, from the songs I have heard always "The Mayflower" stood out for me, as I always get goosepumps from hearing the creaking of the ship's planks ... Cheers, Herb

This song sounded very unusual for the collaboration of Jon and Vangelis. I agree with you that Jon's vocals are not very inspired here. But this is an exception. Other songs are more "commercial", but in a good way. My favorite song from this duo is a longtrack about 20 minutes, called "Horizons" , as far as i remember to find on their album "private collections", much more symphonic and melodic as "curious electric" with great vocals from Jon. Can you react to this? I'm sure you'll love it...😊

This mini electro masterpiece came out on January, 1980, although it was recorded at the end of the Seventies in '79. The album would help usher in the synth-pop bands with the sublime "I Hear You Now" released in December, 1979, and set the gold standard for what was to come. Some might argue that Giorgio Moroder was doing it before, but not quite like this.

Intriguing. I thought exactly the same when i was 13? when it came out. The single though, i Hear You Now, is glorious!

Ok, now that I've listened to your full reaction, let me offer up my opinion on why I disagree with you, but JP, thank you so much for being so honest and forthright (is forthright the correct word here?) with your initial thoughts. I don't care for most music reaction channels, because, well frankly, they're quite boring, but you're not. Ok, "in my opinion" this piece of music was done this way on purpose. It's was "odd" on purpose. So Jon's singing was also odd, on purpose. That's what I love about this piece. I love how weird it is. Similar to why I love Laurie Anderson's Big Science album. It's just so weird. If you haven't heard that whole weird album, hope you'll listen to the rest of it at some point, along with this album too. I'll be shocked if you don't mostly enjoy the rest of this album, but thanks again for reacting to this.

Come on... since we're on the subject of Vangelis, I'm going to recommend his cousin Demis Roussos and his song “Forever and Ever.” They call him the velvet voice of Greece and you've already heard his masterful voice on Aphrodite's Child's album 666. Now you can hear him in his most melodic facet with this song. Hugs.

This was never a favorite of their albums for me, but listening to this reminds me just how great it is, along as I would say all their other work together. It is an oddball track though. So bombastic, with such a quirky offbeat sense of humor. Yeah, Jon's presence is thin on this track, but not on the album. There are some outstanding numbers on this disk, and some lovely love-drenched Jon sentimentalism, but I wouldn't have chosen this song or album to redeem their collaboration in your eyes, and get you really grooving to what they can do together. It would be worth following through with the disk - but really, I see a lot of experimentation here, and them finding their stride. While there are highlights throughout their catalog, Page of Life is my clear favorite, while the epic Horizons from Private Collection is the best single track. I hope you haven't given up hope entirely, and will keep giving them chances until you get a serious hit - it's bound to happen.

For me, their album The Friends of Mr Cairo is pretty much their peak, especially the title track. It may be 12 minutes and change and is effectively 2 thematically linked songs and a linking breakdown but if you love old films, you will adore it.

I have the hardest time with the album "Short Stories." I find "Friends of Mr. Cairo" to be light and day better. "Private Collection" is great and has the epic "Horizon" on it, which is a masterpiece. There are two versions of "Page of Life," and the contents differ significantly and in overall presentation.

Jon and Vangelis requires more than one listen for it to grow. This one really hasn't grown on me too much though. Always great to have Jon on the channel though. Even the ones where he is not his best.

In my opinión you could try at some point Vangelis Albedo 0.39. It mixes amazingly electronic Vangelis trademark sound with progressive, and blues flavour. 95% that more of your taste even despite of not including Jon.

I much prefer the song Jon Anderson did with Tangerine Dream for the movie "Legend." It's called "Loved by the Sun." That whole soundtrack is fantastic.

Jon Anderson seems to have the ability to tame other musicians in a certain way. Vangelis alone is often too massive for my taste. Same with Rick Wakeman. They tend to do a little bit too much. In cooperation with Jon he seems to show them a way to put their outstanding musicianship into the needs of the piece of music.

Jon talked about how much of his collaboration with Vangelis involved him improvising his lyrics and his singing on the spot, and it sometimes doesn't work for me. Like you, I love Jon's vocals, for me 95% of the time, but this was not one of those times. His part felt shoved in the middle, just so he would be part of the song. I've never heard this song, and it was disappointing. What a shame.

There are several great V-JA pieces; this very track is not among the best though.
@kenl20912 күн бұрын
Disagree entirely with your assessment here. This is different from the 'pop' side of J&V which can sometimes be a bit too twee and safe. It takes risks and, while it's more V than J, Anderson's additions are fitting to the musical soundscape. More than pass marks from me.
