Being a huge fan of Logic, (naturally) I'd heard of Jon Bellion through Visionary. Sure, I'd heard his features with Logic and a couple originals, but I'd never really gone out of my way to hear who he was. This interview was my outlet. I now recognize this man as a talented, musical genius. Thank you, Sway (and company), for making this happen.

I couldn't give this guy enough praise. Jon Bellion is brilliant lyrically, instrumentally, and even vocally. I don't even like his usual style of music (found him through rap with VMG crew), but anyone who isn't biased from a musical-style perspective cannot deny his exceptional talent: - Lyricism relates to every demographic and touches the core of humanity. His songs genuinely tell a story, have a message, or share a perspective. Don't get me wrong; many artists do this, but it's the perfect combination of his style (lyrically, instrumentally, vocally) that make his music so stirking. - Instrumentals incorporate nearly every style of modern music, and more impressively, sound unique in an age of copycats. I can't say I've heard music that sounds quite like Bellion... Of course elements of it can be drawn back to other genres or songs, but the difference is that it is unique across every major category. Personally, his work is beyond this time and sounds like the result of instruments/instrumentals through centuries of musical evolution. - Vocally is what probably both attracts and detracts most people. While many people recognize his obvious vocal talent, I think there's a majority (strictly rap listeners, or those unexposed to genres outside of mainstream radio) that quickly become turned off due to the emotion and maybe "softness" of the sound. With that said: it's bullshit. Why wouldn't you utilize a voice like that? My only request to Jon Bellion is that he does incorporate more raps because as shown in this video, he is better than 99% of the rappers in this game. Currently, his music is like ~30% rap, and if he released even an EP or 5 tracks where he went as hard as this or 24 Freestyle (my favorite), he'd put himself out there as people recognize his unique talent. Jon Bellion - hope you see this.

UPDATE!! I wrote the below comment about 5 months ago when I had missed Jon's concert at House of Blues, Dallas. Fast-forward to 2 weeks ago and he came back and… I saw him!! It was definitely worth the wait!! :-) Now here's the original comment made 5 months ago: I feel really bad today in that I purchased the tickets for House of Blues Dallas (to see Jon who played last night) MONTHS in advance (as SOON as they went on sale) and neglected to mark it down on my July calendar ... and… I freaking missed seeing the show last night!! Talk about a downer. Hope he comes back to Dallas or maybe catch him in LA when he plays in a few weeks.

I know this is my 3rd comment… Well, I just finished the whole interview and for somebody who basically "hates rap" (my favorite categories music is solo New Age piano) I can tell you I absolutely love Bellion's stuff! Strange story as to how I discovered him: so, my father is an actor in Los Angeles and had the honor of being in a Ceelo Green music video (as a token white janitor in an all black jazz club which I think takes place in the 50s or 60s!). Being a big fan of Ceelo's music, I was floored to hear that he got that job and went on the net to find out what Ceelo Had been up to and found that song Robin Williams! It is definitely my favorite Ceelo Green tune to date… So I just had to figure out who wrote it and produced it because it was so brilliant and moved me so much. That's when I found out that it was co-written and produced by some guy named Jon Bellion... Went on to you tunes and found "Luxury" and "The Making of Luxury" videos and I was hooked/the rest is history! I guess if I had to say pick a 2nd favorite song next to luxury (my favorite) I might pick "Simple and Sweet," partly because of that awesome video.
