Jesus Christ Superstar commenced it's run in Australia in 1972.
Jon English as Judas, Trevor White as Jesus.
I still have the original vinyl album, libretto and program which were all valuable for some of the information and pictures.
As far as I know this album is not available any longer, and certainly not in CD format.
If you Google the song you will find a download link for this album, now with the songs separated, on my blog as I finally got around to it.
Both this song and "Superstar" are under the same post.
Another of Jon's versions of "Superstar" is available on other CD's.

Breathtaking. Saw the production the first time when I was 12yrs old. Jon English' Judas is so much better than the other productions. Appreciate him enormously and miss him hugely

Still the best version of the show for mine. Saw it in '72 in Sydney....loved it!

I saw it twice at the Palais in Melbourne. Once in 72 and then again in 74 with a different staging. It remains the best show I have ever seen. I was raised on traditional Musicals and as a nine year old this show blew me away. I remember the hexagon and the Herod mobile, the rope netting, the hand held mics and the band on scaffolding around the stage. It was unlike anything I had ever seen or heard.

I was 8 in 1972 and I remember my parents glammed up and went to see this show in Sydney - 1972 I think - so I think they saw this cast (English and White etc). I vividly remember Marcia Hines singing on talk shows (I thought she played Mary Magdalen, but maybe she took over for Michele Fawdon - I dunno). I used to listen to the US cast album at home for hours - I was just a kid - and I still remember almost every lyric! Thanks for posting this!

I saw the Australian cast at the Capitol Theatre, and what an experience. My mate Mark Got me into it ( he went on to play Apostle Phillip in the Castle Hill production with Angry Anderson. This was by far the best cast out of ALL...ie the overseas productions as well, interesting to note,Trevor White and Jon English were rated as the best Jesus and judas at the time. Afew people I know/knew played in the orchestra pit , which was in a glass enclosed area ....love to get a video of this production...

peter guarino My biggest regret is that I only saw it once! I think it was Tim Rice who said they were the best. I have a link on my blog for downloading all of it if you need it. Apparently there was a documentary made of it: details on my blog also. I wish someone would find it! Must be somewhere in a TV studio or other archives.

Thank you so much for making my day better - I have the vinyl but no turntable -saw JC 11 times at Capitol theatre - still have ticket stubs and autographed cherished programmes - I remember my best friend and me getting to meet so many of the cast - Remember Phillip J Hobbins in the cast from Vic who was a penpal for a bit. Stevie - so awesome as Simon. Jon -mesmerising- Michele -you were lovely - Rory! always fantastic.Trevor - the ONLY Jesus(ha) you all gave me so much joy

For both Andrew Lloyd Webber classics, particular the Aussie versions, were two legends that were the legendary Jon English, as Judas and the other legend was Rob Guest, as the phantom. RIP they were true showmen.

@artsbeatla Marcia Hines did take over from Michelle Fawdon, possibly in Sydney. I saw it in Melbourne. I used to listen to the UK version which my sister had bought before the show was staged here. After seeing it I bought the Oz version which was sadly only a small part of it. Amazing, after all theses years it still resonates with so many people and brings back great memories! I still listen to it often. I am most appreciative of your comments and those of everyone else:)

@ Lachlan Turner. I obviously love it also:) And like you I was also brought up on musicals: both stage and screen. As I said below I just wish I had seen it more than once! Shame there is no dvd of it, but thankfully I still have the soundtrack of this version and the original one in the UK which has a lot more songs on it. Shame they didn't do that here. We seem to only have half of it.

I have a blog (can't post the link here, but Google the song) and I have put a download link for this album in MP3 format. I have uploaded it in 2 parts. It wasn't easy to convert as you may recall the songs 'run into each other'. Please feel free to download it - happy to share:) Hope you can get it:)

@johnnoflem128 I don't think there is a video about. I believe the ABC did a documentary on this 1972 version but I don't know anyone who has it:( Hard enough to get the soundtrack now too. Perhaps it is archived away somewhere? Makes one wonder what some TV studios have filed away in some dark vault! I bet there are lots of us who would gladly buy it! If you are on Facebook check out ABBARoxAus's YT channel. There is a link with lots of info about this show.

I cannot believe that Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Really Useful Group' messed up the 2013 Arena Tour Program by totally disregarding this 1972 production. It was the best!

Thanx! I just watched a film version of it yesterday: made in 2001. Rick Mayall was Herod. Some cast members were very good! I didn't recognize anyone else. It was in a modern setting. Not sure if that works. Historically such a unique story doesn't necessarily relate to other occupations/revolutions. Just MHO. Conclusions: The music stands the test of time! Jon English was born for that role rather like Madonna was born to play "Evita". Again, just MHO. Glad I can still listen to it:)

IO saw the Farnham version it was ok but not a parch on the Jon English version. Having said that I did love them both just the 1972 more. Sorry Farnsey. Could be that the 1972 was a play where the 1992 was a concert, I want a video of the 1972 version can I get one?

I think the 1972 version was way better than the 1992 version I love them both but the Jon English Trevor White version is a little more emotional I believe. I do love them both however.

Went to see JC tonight @ Rod Laver....What a bitter disappointment. I really was hoping for a glimpse of what I had to see 8 times @ The Pallais in St. Kilda all those years ago... This new one is irrelevant, hard to follow, & despite having seen it done properly before, seemed to lack any story at all! The audience tonight were standing, clapping etc. I just sat in abject disappointment. .
