The first time I heard Jon Faddis play was in 1976. He was probably around 20 years old. I was in high school and attending a trumpet clinic much like this one. The night before the clinic I heard him playing lead trumpet in the Mel Lewis orchestra, which was a big band. His range and endurance was amazing. The next morning, I’m sitting in a classroom with a bunch of other high school trumpet players, listening to the second chair trumpet player of the Mel Lewis Orchestra, teaching us about playing. Jon meanwhile was sitting in the corner, eating peanuts from a paper bag and dropping the shells on the floor. It was at this point that John was asked to demonstrate the piccolo trumpet. With remnants of peanuts still in his mouth, he played a very beautiful and difficult classical piece on the piccolo trumpet and it was perfect. Needless to say, everyone was very impressed. When he finished the piccolo piece, he returned to the corner and continued eating peanuts. He never uttered a single word ha ha!
