Because Stipe is the Greatest heavyweight of all time. He has the most title defenses. Tom Aspinal is an interim champion. John Jones wants to go down as the best light heavyweight and the best heavyweight of all time. He can do that by beating Stipe not Aspinal

I get why Tom is doing everything to get the fight with jones because he might retire and if Tom can beat him he goes down as the guy who beat jones without a flattened nose. But saying Jon is afraid of Tom is asinine. Jon has fought legends and Tom has not.

at this point in his career given his choice to still pursue the stipe fight, post 295 with aspinall being the interim champ, he most certainly is aware that tom aspinall has a much higher chance of tarnishing his legacy than a stipe does. so he’s not gonna fight him, and he literally said this when he said a win over aspinall does nothing for his lagacy but a win over stipe does at its core that is fear to me

agree with pretty much everything you said. jones is afraid of aspinall. my only point of contention is that jones isnt the greatest mma fighter of all time. right now khabib is, clear and away. but shavkat might surpass him before he retires.
