We had something similar in Sevier County in 2016. As a 22 year Firefighter originally from Miami, I have seen wildland fires, and I have seen hurricane gust winds, but before that time, I had never seen a combination of the 2. It was absolutely extraordinary and tragic as it also resulted in multiple fatalities. However, it was on a much smaller scale than what is occurring in California. To play politics with this kind of natural disaster just shows a prelude as to what is about to come to this Country. Absolutely rediculous. Sometimes I wish I could fall into a coma for the next 4 years.

Per LA Times: "...None of the arsons have been linked to any of the larger wildfires burning throughout the county,....". Maybe some reading re: Southern CA environment, weather conditions over the last year, and the science of fire. The fires likely started from electrical lines and the extraordinary conditions fueled their unprecedented spread.

I believe architecture is incredibly important. In the U.S., many homes are still built with timber, often of mediocre quality. This makes these houses especially vulnerable in the event of a fire. Unfortunately, many contractors in America sell homes built with poor materials at extremely high prices. This is a critical issue that needs more attention.

@@BrianGulla-r9w in flood mitigation it is probabilistic, you can not predict what the highest level of flood will be as it is dependent from the amount of rainfall. floods are not caused by debris on creeks as the water will still flow over the debirs. the california fire results from mismangement of fire breaks, lack of water on fire hydrants, the weather situation is far worse in australia but they do not have such problem of forest fires. controlled fires should also be used like california used to do, build more dams to store water during the rainy season if it takes aseveral months to patch up a covering then something is wrong with california. in addition build homes out of brick and steel.

@@BrianGulla-r9w all residential areas near forests are supposed to be protected by fire breaks and at the very least have water in their fire hydrants. If i am going to build a levee i could build it at 10m high or 2m hig. too high and it would be too expensive that is why we apply probability and take certain risks so we reduce the height. just like building a house you could place many rebars in your structure but it would be too expensive so you take risk and design the building for the most likely scenario. can you now see the difference. the risk of damage in floods is also much lower as the structure still exist unlike fires where you are left with nothing.

I was about to comment on Jon’s comment about “all news pales in comparison [to this current natural disaster]” when there were so many others in the US that got 5 seconds of attention and little to no collective aid but decided not to. On your behalf, I found that comment offensive as much as I respect Jon Stewart. I am so sorry for what you went through and likely are still going through! So many out there are suffering and hardly get attention or the necessary help. This episode, as per usual, is more about attacking the opposition, and fuelling division than it is about empathy towards human suffering. I feel bad for the people in Cali, but a bit of a bias episode if you ask me.
