to defend cat further, the only scene where shes outright CRUEL to jon as opposed to just like, cold and unloving is the one where her second youngest child is lying comatose and probably dying.... so i think she can be forgiven for being a little out of control and emotional
@TheBHNetwork Жыл бұрын
Why would that make her emotional abuse any more forgivable? Bran is also Jon's younger brother, and even furthermore this definitively is the last time Jon will ever get to see said brother dead or alive, and Catelyn deems it necessary to mar that final experience bc what? Her husband was unfaithful 15 years ago before they had even been together for a month?
@FireofGia111 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBHNetwork A) people can be unintentionally abusive, especially when faced with stressors, so forgiving someone is up to the victims prerogative. B) it wasn't that Ned was unfaithful; it's that he treats his child with someone else as just as important as his with her which puts the mystery woman on the same level as her IN A FEUDAL SOCIETY. Raising Jon as a Stark would mean horrible political ramifications
@TheBHNetwork Жыл бұрын
@@FireofGia111 A) While situations can arise where someone is abusive unintentionally, this is, without a shadow of a doubt, not one of those situations. What you mean to say is that outside stressors can cause abusers to internally rationalize their entirely intentional abuse, which is a different thing. Catelyn does not lack agency in her choice to berate a 14 year old Jon as he visits his dying brother, she actively chose to do so. She also continually bares ill-will and malice toward the boy long after Bran wakes up (mainly in the books as she really only ever even acknowledges Jon's existence once after this scene in the show), despite his undying loyalty to her children and their house. B.) I do hope you realize that this semantic doesn't change the fact that Catelyn's hatred and abuse of Jon is entirely unjustifiable. As both Jon and his dead/missing mother pose literally zero threat to her and her children, even within the context of this FEUDAL SOCIETY. Ned never intended to raise Jon as a Stark capable of usurping her children's claim to Winterfell, and Jon, especially as a preteen, never made any moves or acted in any way that portrayed a will to usurp them on his own either. As a matter of fact, at the time of this specific bout of abuse, Jon is dead set on joining a faction that requires him to renounce his ability to ever hold any lands in the first place. To demand that Ned shame Jon's mother and abandon their infant to a fatherless existence, when he is well within his means to give both Jon and all of his other children by Catelyn a fulfilling life is terrible. To then take out your frustration with your husband's decision on a child is despicable. Idc if it's common for others to do it, it is also common for bastards to be raised by the nobility that fathered them (Edric Storm, Mya Stone, Marston Waters, etc). Despite all this, yeah, Jon would probably forgive her for all of it if she asked (she wouldn't bc she regards Jon as a second class human being). Bc Jon is an absolute mensch, despite Catelyn's abusing of him. That doesn't mean that we the audience have to forgive her though lol.

If Cat did nothing wrong why was she so guilty about Jon later on in the series?
@crow6558Ай бұрын
@@kaievoke I didn't say she did nothing wrong. Cat treated Jon badly and later came to regret it, which is a little something called "character development." such an awesome part of the story in both the show and the books. Jon was a petulant and resentful child until Tyrion gave him some basic perspective, interesting to note that it wasn't the Night's watch but Tyrion Lannister who started Jon's true development into such a just and wise leader. The lessons imbued by Ned only come out later on in his time as a Watchman, which subtly conveys the pot holes in Ned's way of life and how he brought up his children.

Here's to hoping GRRM leaves a more detailed outline for the books he never finishes to some very competent people (plural, yes) that do excellent dialogue (Like Brent Weeks and N. K. Jemisin because they're not decrepit yet) and that eventually, we'll have some downright sick animation done on a completed book series because I'll probably never like a new cast nearly as much as I love castings like Clarke, Dinklage, Dance, and McCann among many many others.
