God called Jonah to preach to the city of Nineveh because the people there were living in great wickedness. However, Jonah didn’t want to go because Nineveh was one of Israel’s greatest enemies, and he wanted nothing to do with helping them.
Instead of obeying God, Jonah tried to flee in the opposite direction, boarding a ship bound for Tarshish. In response, God sent a powerful storm that threatened to destroy the ship. The sailors, realizing Jonah was the cause of the storm, threw him overboard, and immediately the storm ceased.
God then sent a large fish-often referred to as a whale-to swallow Jonah, saving him from drowning. While inside the fish for three days, Jonah prayed, repented, and praised God. After three days, the fish vomited Jonah onto the shore near Nineveh.
Jonah then preached to the people of Nineveh, warning them that the city would be destroyed in 40 days if they did not repent. The Ninevites believed Jonah, turned from their wicked ways, and God showed them mercy.
However, Jonah became angry and bitter that God spared Israel’s enemies. While Jonah rested, God provided a vine to give him shade, but the next day, He sent a worm to destroy the vine. Jonah, now exposed to the hot sun, complained and wished for death. God then questioned Jonah, pointing out that while Jonah was concerned about the vine, God was concerned about the lives and hearts of the 120,000 people living in Nineveh.
