Goes from playing the flugelhorn horn directly to trumpet, I don’t know how many of you play, but that transition is not a simple and easy one, the flugelhorn horn mouthpieces are different than the trumpet mouthpiece and the blow is not the same, for him to be able to go right from flugelhorn horn to playing way above the staff on a trumpet is not ordinary at all. This kid has a massive amount of talent and blessing.
@bysuke-3 жыл бұрын
The transition was so huge for me I had to get the same mouthpiece as my trumpet one. For trumpet I use a WB GR and the transition from flugel to trumpet was too huge for me so I had to get a WB GR flugel mouthpiece this man is pure talent.

@bigeyezzzzzzz9 жыл бұрын
+David Breese Hi there..this is Michael Miller...I'm the person who has mentored and recorded Jonah for the past 6 years. What you saw was my way of trying to fix a nasty audio glitch that occurred at that point, which I didn't catch until a few days after Jonah left the session. A bad cable caused a "zap" that covered 2 beats at that spot. It was so bad that it was impossible to tell what he played for those beats, so I popped in those 2 beats from a previous take and didn't realize that the fingers didn't match until after the video was submitted. You have good eyes for sure. And, no, there was definitely no faking by Jonah. If you ever heard him play live, you'd know that he's the real deal.
@GamesGutzy9 жыл бұрын
+bigeyezzzzzzz Yeah I've heard him at the 2015 Next Generation Jazz orchestra and he sounds amazing! Sorry for being quick to judge and thanks for clearing that up!
@bigeyezzzzzzz9 жыл бұрын
+David Breese No problem. He's quite an extraordinary player, and I wish my eyes had been as sharp as yours before this was submitted, because I would've just had him redo the tune. But at least the audio glitch was only on a few low notes on an otherwise highly impressive audition. Being in the same room with the fiery sound coming from his horn is quite an extraordinary experience, to say the least!

@bigeyezzzzzzz8 жыл бұрын
Hi Xavier...thanks so much for your kind words for Jonah. Of course, everyone is different, but what has helped Jonah a lot is realizing that one must be able to first play high notes softly before playing them loud. By playing them softly, your lip muscles and facial setup is trained without stress. And once that is in place, all one has to do is speed up the air to play the notes fatter and louder. There is a great video on KZbin by Charlie Porter that has helped Jonah a lot, and I hope it helps you as well... kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJ-TeKGFjZl5ra8 Wishing you well :)

Hello. I was browsing and listening to all of these Grammy auditions. I wasn't even looking at the videos and just working and listening to the auditions through my earphones. When I heard your audition I immediately stopped working to see who you were because your sound and playing is amazing - easily distinguished from the other players. I then found out you were selected as Lead Trumpet. Congratulations! Sounds like you are going to have a prominent and successful trumpet career. I haven't played trumpet in a long time - 30 years. Hearing you has now given me great motivation to start up again. I have an older King cornet and am looking to get a new horn. What trumpet brand and model are you playing?

Well, thank you so much for such a wonderful message! There are so many people who inspire me to work harder and harder every day, and I never imagined I would be a source of inspiration for anyone else. Anyway, I am so glad you are starting to play again...and, to answer your question, my trumpet is a Yamaha YTR6340ST, And, in case you want to know, I use the Yamaha Shew lead mouthpiece. I hope that all helps, and I thank you again for such an amazing message!

+bigeyezzzzzzz Thanks for the response. I saw you stated on an earlier post about that Shew mouthpiece & ordered one. A friend lent me his Bach Strad 37 until I find me a new trumpet. I am looking into the Yamaha trumpets - YTR 6335 & 8335. I couldn't find the same model as yours. I don't think they make that anymore. I notice that the tuning slide on your trumpet does not have a brace & is round. Those 2 Yamahas I'm looking at don't come like that - they have a brace and are semi round or square. Do you have a custom tuning slide? I've been reading that the round tuning slide helps make it easier to blow or opens up the horn.

+Dorothy Vela Thanks for writing, and I'm sorry to say I don't know the answer to your question. :-( The horn I play was lent to me by a family friend when I first starting playing trumpet, and it's just what has worked for me so far, so I've never looked into or learned much of anything about trumpet models, designs, etc. So sorry I can't be of any help...

+Dorothy Vela I believe he has a reverse tuning slide. I think it makes it more open or something like that lol. Trying look up a Yamaha Xeno Reverse Tuning Slide.

Is Billie's Bounce improv around 4:26? If so, impressive phrasing.

Yes, and thanks, but I've still got lots of work to do though...
