Hi Jon I don’t fish river much. But what Makes you walk past all the other swims on the river. Then sit on the peg you fish. It’s something that just baffles me.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 жыл бұрын
This one I specifically had an area I wanted to fish based on a previous visit. Plus I was travelling light and had every intention of trying a few swims, so it makes sense to start on the furthest swim and work your way back.

The roach on my bit of Warwickshire Avon have been missing for a couple of months now. But the chub fishing was tremendous before the cold snap and the floods. Can’t wait to get back at them once the river has fined down a bit more. This vid has really upped my eagerness to get back on the river. Cheers Jon.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure they get shoaled up tightly and migrate to other areas. Hope none got stuck in the ditches and field hollows after all the flooding. Never seen the river so high and where it joins the canal was unbelievable.

Enjoyable and informative! Why are British anglers so attached to spade-end hooks rather then eyed hooks? Are they really advantageous or just traditional?
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 жыл бұрын
Most eyed barbed hooks are simply too strong and thick gauged for the style of fishing anglers like myself do. No probs using eyed for everything if you're after specimens though.

Mind you I did chuckle when you said you were travelling light with your box strapped over your shoulder no way could I carry my Absolute 36 that far. Keep up the good work Jon, looking forward to your next video

HI John, I have fished that stretch for nearly 40 years and with the state of the Cherwell now you did very well to catch those fish. It used to be one of the most prolific chub stretches of the Cherwell with a very good average size. About 15 or 16 years ago the numbers declined but the average size increased and it wasn't until 2008 that I caught a five pounder there, despite literally dozens of high fours over the years. It is now absolutely gruelling work to catch chub there, and they don't seem that big now either. Great video and good luck on the river.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I think it's bizarre how there are not more fish to catch. Maybe they have gone nocturnal, which is why I caught ok with the extra colour? I have tried some awesome looking pegs and any other river it'd be solid. I've seen otters on it and cormorants so there must be fish there too. It's not heavily fished either. I have heard rumours of pollution too, which wouldn't surprise me with all the farms around it. Still enjoy fishing there as it's such a challenge and puzzle. It's hard to think where the fish might migrate to in winter but I'm sure there will be a pile of them somewhere...

What a great video and what a versatile angler, Really enjoyed that one Jon, oh one thing...could you tell which net handle you were using, was it the Horizon 4.5 super slim? is so, how does it compare to the 4M horizon with the two threads? I only really fish rivers and natural venues.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. Yes I used the 4.5m. Its slimmer, lighter, not as strong as the 4m and only the top section is threaded but defo my choice for rivers if thats all you do. Its definitely more of a silverfish handle.

@JonArthur

Surely no one knows. Fish have to eat and replace energy fighting currents. Im sure runoff from all the roadside chemicals and slurry puts the fish off a bit, but they could just as easily be feasting on worms from the flooded fields! I know a nearby sewer works flooding also caused concern but no one really looks into it. I think the resident otter doesn’t help either. Would love someone to tag the fish and see what they do. We’ll never really know...
