Even the best of the best will have their off days, that's what makes us human, and yet we will still strive for perfection. I am amazed that the audience of La Scala were so understanding,...They are known for being quite tough on tenors making mistakes. But Jonas caught them on a good day.

I love that the audience started singing the correct lines to prompt him, and that he was so graceful about the mistake. No big deal when you sing so well and leave the audience so very satisfied.

Straining subfusc cow sound--Germanic. The "human" & "adorable" tenor (Kaufmann) couldn't read the conductor's lips?
@ardis4749 жыл бұрын
immeralles besserwisser Text screw ups arn't unusual but top opera stars "failing" (collapsing) mid-way while singing Nessun Dorma the most famous aria in the Italian repertory at La Scala--after many cancellations? incidentally, in the past there existed privately (and professionally) audio taped documentation during Scala/Met, etc., performances. Ditto word of mouth and well known responses from audiences and critics. --To hear how this ITALIAN aria should be sung search on the You Tube site: "Nessun Dorma--Franco Corelli Peer Gynt".
@ardis4749 жыл бұрын
immeralles besserwisser You opinion of Corelli (heard live) is a distinct minority. Franco Corelli was a natural spinto (lyric) with gorgeous dark color, a fearless attack, visceral sensuality and wide range with a unique thrilling top that extended beyong a high C. Corelli had a smoothness and long unbroken line not typical of a dramatic tenor. Distinct and aberrant. Pavarotti quote: "Corelli was the greatest dramatic tenor who ever lived." Domingo quote "Fantastic..Corelli...was the most thrilling tenor I ever heard live." Volpi said Corelli was not only a "great tenor" he went so far as to call Corelli his natural heir. Karajan on Corelli: "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone, darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic but most of all, a voice of thunder and lightening, fire and blood." Schonberg, senior music critic NYTs: "Corelli has something of an exciting animal drive which when let loose..dominates, a force of nature, an act of God, the vocal equivalent of an earthquake, a volcano.." Fact: Nessun Dorma is the most famous aria in Italian opera. Kaufmann "NEVER sung" a complete Turandot because at age 45 he still can't hack it in the Italian repertory which, by the way, he is familiar and his subfusc cow sound has made very heavy noises in for many years. Unlike German helden Kaufmann, Maestro Corelli had the intelligence and musicianship to stay away from an operatic repertory not suited to his voice. Many major opera stars are not idiomatic in the French language. Kaufmann's Italian falls short of perfection.. Admittedly, it is Kaufmann's very good fortune that he is the recipient of state of the art AMPLIFICATION technology (denied to Corelli) with respect to in-house and CD recordings. In house recordings (private and profession) have surfaced from 35 years ago--especially those taping key performances of the major opera stars. No one denies that Corelli spent his capital vocally but career longevity is not the measure of greatness as Callas and Bastianini make evident. -- It will be manifestly clear to listeners after hearing Corelli on the You Tube site: "Nessun Dorma--Franco Corelli Peer Gynt" what a "MEDIOCRE" tenor he was. L O L.
@ardis4749 жыл бұрын
immeralles besserwisser Kaufmann doesn't have to "lisp" when he is busy making ponderous cow sounds in the Italian opera. Was Corelli the ONLY star tenor afflicted with nerves before a performance? In fact. Kaufmann's opera and concert cancellations are becoming the thing of legend. How many times did he cancel before making it to the Met and Scala in 2015? L O L. It is the helden tenor Kaufmann--not Corelli--who has forced himself into a life (Italian blood opera) for which he does not belong. Corelli in the Italian repertory: Quote Pavarotti on Corelli: "The greatest dramatic tenor who ever lived." Quote Domingo: "Corelli....fantastic..the most thrilling tenor I ever heard live." Quote Karajan on Corelli: "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone, darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic but above all, a voice of thunder and lightening, fire and blood." Pulitzer Prize winning Harold C. Schonberg (senior music critic NYT) on Franco Corelli: "...exciting animal drive....that when let loose dominates--a force of nature, an act of God, the vocal equivalent of an earthquake...volcanic.."
@ardis4749 жыл бұрын
immeralles besserwisser If you can kneel before your God Kaufmann in the Italian repertory (up to you), I will kneel before my God Corelli. Incidentally, it would make more sense to direct your ire at the considered judgments of Lauri Volpi, Pavarotti, Domingo, Karajan, Schonberg, and the Golden Age opera stars who "were honored" to partner with Corelli....ETC, ETC.......Ditto at the World's greatest opera houses and their managements who hired "lisping" "flat" "ugly" Corelli and assigned his glorious powerhouse instrument to the top tier of the opera profession.
