Whether you like Kaufmann's voice or find it too covered, ingolato, whatever, this is still great singing. This guy always has a deep connection with his support mechanism and yes, perhaps, darkens his tone a little too artificially and "cheats" certain piano dynamics but please take note of his artistry, his way of completely conscienciously bringing more or less mask resonance in his tones for crescendo effect, etc. This guy knows his voice. He doesn't need you telling him he is a baritone or other useless comments. If he were a baritone, he would not be able to SUSTAIN THE TENOR TESSITURA! Enough with the amateur voice experts!

It isn't about doing the "right" technique; it's about doing the right technique for you. When Kauffman sang Mozart as a lyric, you could tell he was "lightening" his voice which is actually much more artificial for him than what he does now.
@stevevandien3106 жыл бұрын
The ring, ping, intensity, squillo or whatever you want to call it makes the voice carry and makes the sound exciting. A voice that significantly lacks thus quality tends toward dullness, whatever the singer's virtues. And Kauffmann has a great many: intelligence, imagination, musicality, a strong and appealing stage presence --
@professionalmusician11725 жыл бұрын
This is a good example how you can accomplish a convincing and even touching rendition of a difficult aria, even if the whole organisation of your vocal sound production is fundamentally flawed and manipulated. Kaufmann's strength is his great musicality and concentration, united with a great breath controll. On the other hand you have a voice that is artificially darkened and pushed backwards. Of course, dark voices are very fashionable at the moment, so many singers tend to manipulate their instruments towards that 'ideal'. The price is high: An overall throaty sound, piano notes that have no 'core' and sound 'clowdy', high notes that are exciting, yes, but also quite close to a howl. On the other hand we hear have an artist that has something to say, that has - in spite of a vocal organisation that is fundamentally problematic - found a great range of colours. That is more than most singers have.

@@ReGremlin Taking the time to organize your thoughts, put them on here for people to read without puzzling them and having more than one sentence in a paragraph (which I am attempting to do now to, to resist the "internet thing"): all this makes "professional musician" worth reading. His assessment is quite good, he knows his stuff. Acknowledge that and you've already helped, without the snark. On the other hand, a medal is kind of like a cowboy scene where people spit all clang-itty into a spitoon and say: "Oh, whatever, I come from the sticks, you must have studied somewhere." I sang Carmina Burana's drunken abbot (estuans, etc) aria once, long, long ago, just that way (artificially held back in throat somehow to get that licorice hue) --> to great effect and praise from those who liked it. But never could I have held that stance and wrongness in my voice without straining it - and not damaging your voice calls for placement, projection, closeness to the proper register "passaggi" - a sense of how the sound radiates out while being "inhaled" and a relaxed stance. At the same time you must also contain the expenditure of air with consummate breath control. It is one of the most exposed musical instruments, and as some people say about a Mozart aria: you stand there bare naked for the experts to realize that you are up to the task, or not. But who cares: even his biography has a translation which places descriptive commentary in the wrong octave, meaning he is surrounded by some people who are clueless about vocal professionalism. Yet he remains a professional through-and-through and deserves the acclamation and recognition of his artistic stance and power for what it is, a great life accomplishment he consistently delivers. No wonder we are all thrilled by those "money notes" and the whole package!

A mi tambien.
