Best first stage of a TdF in my memory. Cannot even think of any 1st stage coming close. Became even more exciting because of the jonas/Pogocar rivalry since most knew of Jonas accident and Pogocars positive covid test 2 weeks before start.Following if any off them were showing weakness, just added to it all. Incredibly they both looked strong which only makes the also tough stage 2, potentially just as exciting. YEAHHHHH! 5 mountain tops on stage 1! What a stroke of genius from TdF. NEVER another 1st stage TT again!

I'm wondering what other's people opinion is on this, I just caught the last 40k at home with my parents on Dutch tv and looking at it I agree with the Dutch commentators that in the end Van den Broek looked stronger and did more than Bardet. They also said that they should have given the win/yellow to Van den Broek because it would be great for his career while Bardet will retire in the same standing whether he wins this stage or not, as well as that Van den Broek plain deserved it. I also understand that Bardet is their leader but still I feel like as marketing/nurturing a prospect and such it would have been great to give Van den Broek the win. (I will say I might also be biased because I am Dutch)

Wait a few day when the Tour is gonna enter France. Then you will understand why DSM let Bardet win. Or just read the newspapers or the comments on KZbin. Everybody likes Bardet and with this yellow jersey it's a feel good story for him, the Tour, the public and DSM
@milazbenecka6 ай бұрын
neither one would win without the other one. it was a teamwork and bardet is the leader. that being said, van den broek was an absolute machine being able to pull after being almost all day in the breakaway. i believe i wasnt his last chance in tdf.
@gilbertboot5726 ай бұрын
I think go with Van den Broek reaction. Coming across the line and in the post race interview. He clearly feels that it was Bardet who made the play for the stage and not him, and that the most significant factor was that Bardet kept the pace up on the hills.
@gilbertboot5726 ай бұрын
Also, keep in mind that it is much harder for Bardet to get away from the peleton than it is for Van den Broek because of his climbing reputation. The timing has to be perfect. That's not to take away from what Frank did, by the way. Put simply, I was absolutely awed by his performance and found it inspiring.
