It seems to me that, this young man came to us in a complete package of warmth and kindness, not the least suppressed by his great gift but completely and happily willing to share this rarity for the world to enjoy that which no one can explain. He certainly has a great voice, but if he wants to sing opera he should study the style(s)- he has great facility with the notes, but this is not enough. Many people who have already declared him to be the ‘greatest tenor of this generation’ have no clue what Opera is all about. It’s great to be passionate and positive, but it’s equally important to be well- informed. Jonathan has great potential and I wish him the very best, but it’s ridiculous to expect the impossible from someone so young. All the greats have studied- and so must he. If he does, chances are he WILL surpass many established names.

There is something very sweet about his voice. He doesn’t sound like a spinto tenor, might be more of a lyrical tenor with a more clear and bright timbre. But that could be the lack of maturation in his voice due to his young age. This aria takes years of studying with a great maestro. There’s something off about his performance. He’s too sweet for this aria (Could be his English accent) But overall, a promising young man if he finds the right maestro to learn from. I would like to recommend both of you to listen to another young tenor around the same age that has studied to sing these arias. Piero Barone from Il Volo sings this aria beautifully for someone so young. He is a nice mix of Pavarotti and Domingo (his mentor). Let me know what you think, thanks!

Thank you Michael for this recording - there are many things I would like to type in reply to comments on my brother's vocal ability but those of us that experience it first hand know how Jonathan sounds with and without a microphone - his recent performances (in December) of this aria without mic are proof of his ability but I wish people would remember that this event recorded here is outside too. That said - we all know Jonathan's training continues and will continue throughout his singing career. A singer is always learning but his voice is beautiful now and was from age 14 - and of course younger before his voice broke. He refused to use a microphone until he had to when on tv as he prefers the natural sound but in the commercial world there is little option in many concerts. Please enjoy him for who and what he is and hope and pray that he stays singing for us all to enjoy as he matures.

@@adamknight7041 Why Nessun Dorma? Its a great aria, but I wouldn't wait for that. I think, people have to remember that a lot of what is attractive to people today, are singers who utilize the microphone and its settings. Intimate settings, where you can hear the mouth of the singer and its every nuance. Listen to the singer Dimash for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWOcq3irj7uUrtU Jonathan Antoine, also on many of his recordings, will utilize this for great effect. Pavarotti, rarely ever recorded like that. There were a few pop type of albums that Pavarotti did, where his voice was recorded somewhat like that. Singing the song Caruso for example (Studio Version). In the live version in Paris, Pavarotti didn't go with that setting as it qives an artifical representation of the voice. Comparing Opera and Popular singing is like apples and oranges. They are very different things.
@nthdegree12695 жыл бұрын
Ruth, I don't know. I have heard Jonathan Anotine sing a number of arias, and truthfully I would only put it at ok. This particular aria he sings better and I like it more. You have to understand, that most of what I am hearing is the use of mezza voce, or half voice used to great effect on a microphone. Pavarotti, had a beautiful, much clearer mezza voce, but he didnd't use it as often . His transition in that voice to fullness and steel is flawless. Here is a short example kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4uTf5SeYqlqmrs But what you don't see is a Opera singer capitilizing on that and using a microphone with intimate settings to further enhance the tone. With Opera singers, they try and keep the sound closer to what it would be if you saw them live, or at least somewhat along those lines.

@gandalfthegrey71463 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree with bullying whatsoever. Absolutely deplorable. However, an objective view at his technique? He’s not good. Simple as that. People saying “he’s the greatest of all time” are out of their minds or just normies who don’t understand good vs bad opera. He doesn’t have the tenor quality, doesn’t sing with a lower larynx, dark sound. Flits between too throaty and too nasally/doesn’t know how to control his voice properly. He’s singing with a mic...don’t know if the orchestra would drown him out without one. His voice sounds too tight at times and too loose and sloppy at others. Most of the song he’s singing like a normal person, not “operatically”, which is what makes me think he couldn’t sing in a real opera without a mic, simply not enough power or projection. His vibrato sounds forced...doesn’t feel like it’s naturally coming out. His elocution/pronunciation is poor and he therefore doesn’t understand the language. He rushes through words he should linger on and draws out others he shouldn’t. He clearly doesn’t understand the opera of Tosca itself. I’m not saying he can’t become great, his voice has potential, I’m simply saying his technique is poor...he’s not trained. He’s the definition of an amateur tenor. He’s only famous because he went on Britain’s Got Talent and he’s overweight and got bullied. There are thousands of other opera singers far superior to him who will never get the recognition he has because of the reasons afore mentioned. That’s the real tragedy.

What an amazing performance of this Aria from Tosca. His voice sounds so mature & very reminiscent of great opera singers of the past.

This video shows a more accomplished vocal and musical performance. Compared to two other videos I've watched, his line is better and it really shows the quality of his voice which I think is beautiful. There is only one obvious flaw in this performance which is when he takes a breath in the middle of the phrase. Enjoyed it so much!

This was massive impressive. 21 Years. Those who complains are those who been training for years and here they realise they are crushed by an X-factor singer on pure talent. Most impressive is the ease he sings all notes. He uses mostly a quite closed mouth and still gets far better effect than singers using very wide mouth shapes. The most important is his timbre which is incredible beautiful . He just on sheer talent knocks all conservatory students to the floor and they just can't cope with it. Natural talent always beats the ordinary trained. You don't get a full show in Canadian TV being a mediocre tenor graduated from the typical music school. For a solo career their examine papers are not worth more than wiping their bottoms.

It gladdens the heart to witness the emergence of so wondrous, indeed supernal, a vocal talent as Jonathan Antoine. God has bestowed a miraculous gift to him that he has cultivated to perfection, and humanity is immeasurably enriched for it. I wish him every measure of good fortune in this life that he may grow, evolve, enjoy love, laughter, the loyalty of faithful friends, good health, longevity, and continued grand success.

When Jonathan asked about songs to sing, this was one that I asked him to do. I remember his comments to me, "I'll be probably crying at the end'.

Thank you for this Michael, i so enjoy hearing Jonathan Antoine sing this Aria,he is still so very young in his profession,whatever avenue he decides to follow i know he will do so with dignity . I have listened to many Tenors since a small child and enjoyed them immensely,i now listen to this young man he has a richess to his voice that ifind i havent heard before. I hope he follows his heart where his music is concerned and proves alot of doubters wrong in the years to come, also i wish people would stop comparing him to other Tenors, Jonathan is himself the same as they are why keep comparing such a young voice with such older ones. Give him a chance and when hes as old as others then people can maybe compare but until then just enjoy this young man with a beautiful voice
