Has anyone read any of his books? I'm reading 'Pompey' at the moment, and it's absolutely hilarious, with exactly the sort of vocabulary you'd expect from Meades.

I wish school history syllabuses could present broad themes as Meades does here for the flowering of the Hanseatic League and associated northern parts of Europe. Other themes could be the birth of the Renaissance in the South, or the development of parliamentary democracy. Its a vastly more interesting, assimilable and useful way to look at history than the utterly turgid syllabus that we endured.

Meades is always comically and subtly acerbic about his subject matter. Its never a direct jab - he just exposes you to the underbelly of your suspicions.
