At the end of the day, no one cares about YOUR time except YOU. I'm 48. I have the job you described, I have the weight gain you described. I have a history of exercise (weight loss), then no exercise (weight gain). I've realized I try to hard to "perform" at work when I'm already in the top 20% of my peers without really trying. I've had the "worst" 18 months in recent years... drinking is up, bad eating is up and I'm working myself hard for no real benefit. Race because you love it. Improve because you want to be better than you were. Keep with your goals so your accountable. After 12 months "off", I'm back at it again and I'm already enjoying the journey. It's not about my time or my place... it's about the commitment and the journey. Just being better than I was and not going backwards. Keep moving forwards no matter how "old" you are. Fall down 7 times, get up 8 times.

Nice one Adam! You are spot on. In 2009 I targeted sub 3 hours for loch Ness marathon. Got 3 hrs 20seconds, very disappointed. I was only doing running back then. Last year I did a few tris and I feel more well rounded and just smashed my 10mile pb. Going to give sub 3 another go in 2019 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

As soon as we got back she entered Barcelona 2019. She was entered for IM Bolton 2017 but had a bad bike accident 5 weeks before the event. So she entered IM Austria 2018 and finished !! . You will enjoy Austria it is a great swim and bike course. Good luck and enjoy the journey ,no matter how many times you fall off , get back up and prove you can do it .

Unreal. That 10hr mark is a big goal. Sometimes it seems like the better I get, the further away those goals feel; I already know how much I do and how hard I work, and yet they're still a long way away. Great motivation, great film. Well done! EDIT to add: And actually, one other thing. Super relate to the point about "If you show up and haven't put the effort in, it's going to be horrible." That's what I love about the sport so much. I don't really believe there's good luck. IMO, the best "good luck" you can have is meeting the potential you prepared for. You can have bad luck that can get in the way, but you'll never withdraw more than you put in.

I did one of my first full marathons one year post neck spinal fusion surgery. I was so down in the dumps after the surgery and was a very limiting physical fitness and activities for the better part of 8-9 months but after I got cleared from the doctors and was all healed up I did the exact same thing. I booked the race about 5 months out so I knew I HAD to show up come race day. I trained and worked my butt off to get back into the shape I wanted and I went out and ran a 5 hour marathon. I am by no means a runner but through determination and a good support group I didn't give up and was super stoked when I crossed that finish line.

A remarkable story and so well told - warts and all. Although I’m coming into this a lot later, my philosophy is the same - I can’t “just do it”. I have to have a reason, a target - Like your sub 10 hour race. Well done of smashing that in 9:36, btw.. So, 2 years after you published this video, I’m about to set off on a similar journey. At a point where I was beginning to worry that I really had left it too late. This video reminded me why I started my own Ironman journey. “Because it means something to me” Thank you. 👍

Congrats on the sub 10. My dream is to do a sub 10 at Ironman Canada 2022 as it will be my 3rd Ironman. I did the Ironman in 2002 and in 2012. My plan is to do Ironman every 10 years and my times have been 11:40 and 12 hrs. I'm pretty sure I can do a sub 10 if I start training NOW 2 years ahead of the race. I can do the swim in under 1 hour (thats my strength) but the bike has always been around 5:30 and the run has always been a disaster. I'm a bit of a clydsdale since I'm 6'3 and weigh about 200lbs. I know I need to lose weight, get to about 175 or so. Thats my goal.
