What also made this iconic was how contemporary it felt in comparison with its western counterparts. Early 2nd gen kpop still felt a little dated, but somehow the elecrto/dance pop of the late 2000s was when kpop started to feel "modern", which made it very accessible for international fans when it started blowing up on youtube. 2ne1 was also very proactive by provising English versions too, they were all over American TV - America's Next Top Model and the Bachelor, also their 2012 arena tour stops in the US... there was something about 2ne1's energy that felt so different at that time. It's hard to describe now, but 2ne1, Teddy Park, and electro pop were the perfect combo especially for the time.

I agree! If you listen to Kpop pre-like 2005, as you said it could sound a little dated. But 2NE1/YG/Teddy Park were pretty forward thinking in embracing a more western sound. That really paid off in a lot of ways! :)

I remember that Surface Pro ad quite well - I noticed that cool music - the synth riff in particular! But I had no idea what it was, or even what language I was hearing, so I didn't follow up on it. Six years later I watched K-drama The K2 and a character sings a snippet of "I am the Best" and I thought "It's that song!" But I didn't know the group or the spelling of the title. It took me a while to find out what it was, but finally I discovered 2NE1 and I've loved them ever since.

Now I'm not saying that this group has bad music. But I find this interesting... As you mentioned 2ne1 sold 66 million albums. And blackpink sold 17 million albums. So at least by that statistic 2ne1 was a more popular kpop group world wide.

2ne1 sold 66 million records not albums. Record meaning single. Majority of the songs in all of 2ne1's albums are sold as independent single with physical and digital format. So yeah, to make in simple Blackpink sold more albums whereas 2ne1 sold more singles.

Its a trash song with energetic intro but gets immediately boring and repetitive. It was just famous because of the time it ws released. But if you look at song structure and compositional value, its nothing fun. Yes its remembered as iconic. But iconic doesn't mean its a GREAT song!.

"I am the best" was released 2011, this one was released 2010 But SUPER STAR has great production, instrumentals, while going depth in lyrics. But obviously for a lot of NEW kpop fans who only pay attention to BIG 3 or only checking out group for being Blackpink's predecessor, sadly won't know these "gem" songs of 2nd gen outside of BIG3.
