This was an incredible reaction. This is definitely one of my most listened albums since 2014. You are completely right about the essence captured by this record. It is timeless. I met Isaiah in Dublin at his show when i was 16. He's just a normal guy, so down to Earth. His live show was really fucking good. Also, when you broke down during Heavenly Father, I joined you. That song has meant so much to me for so long. As an adolescent dealing with the absence of a father figure and mental health issues, this song just made me feel less alone. Great video and unparalleled analysis as usual from these reactions. College has me so busy, but when I get a chance to check out JD Tha Prophet's work, it's never a disappointment.

i grew up with an alcoholic father and always had a rough relationship with him. a few years back he got diagnosed with terminal liver disease and it sent me to rock bottom. i also started dealing with alcoholism issues of my own. i heard this tape for the first time during a late night sesh with the homie after i had a breakdown and on the brink of attempting to take my own life. to say that it touched the bottom of my soul would be an understatement. never related to anything more than when i heard this album for the first time. it will always be personally my favorite project ever, it quite literally might have saved my life. thank you zay for this absolute gem of a tape. much love to all.

When you said he might be your favorite over Kenny I felt that in my soul. Kendrick’s music has a special place in heart just for the time in which I found him and everything it did for me. But let me tell you the first time I heard Isaiah Rashad it was like a tsunami slapping me in the face. I can relate heavily to a lot of what he raps about and being my age and from the same state as me made the connection to his music so much more special. Discovering Isaiah Rashad was like Morpheus finding Neo. Except Isaiah hasn’t missed yet. And if his track record is anything to go by I don’t think he ever will. The man just doesn’t know how to make a bad song. Thanks for the video

When you said on Hereditary that its straight forward with no metaphors. The whole song is ironic because hes saying his dad taught him all those things, but his dad left him, so he taught him those things but really he learned them himself from his father not being there for him (how to drink my pain away, that I dont need nobody, how to leave somebody)

I saw your comparison between Zay and Kendrick and I feel simil. To me they’re two sides of the same coin. Kendrick to me represents our perfect self. Every song, every word, every syllable is used exactly how he wants it to be. And even when things are going poorly and we’re feeling down things will be fine, “we’re gonna be alright.” However, because everything is so great, it feels a bit out of reach. Zay is us at our most vulnerable. Raw emotion, pure honesty, and at times it doesn’t feel like we’ll make it to the other side. I feel like the reaction you had to Heavenly Father is a reaction to how a lot of us Zay fans felt listening to his whole discography, our at least myself for certain (maybe cause Zay’s story resembles mine quite a lot but that’s besides the point). We look at Kendrick and we see how we want to see ourselves. Zay is like looking in a mirror at all our insecurities and anxieties and issues trying to face them head on, and we might not win. But even though we don’t have it figured out we will at some point, we’ll get to our Kendrick. Sorry if this went on too long but these guys are my 2 favorite artists ever and I feel passionate about their music. Great reaction as ways Jon

You don't hear/feel any vulnerability and raw emotion from Kendrick tracks though?.. (Sing about me, u, FEEL, FEAR, etc.) Idk, even though Kendrick has a lot of positive messages and morals in his music, it never struck me as something out of reach or a representation of our "perfect self". To me, he's just living his truths while we listen along. A lot of his songs reflect personal experience and I don't think the other elements in music overshadow the disparity and relatability that he has in his music. Just my opinion though...Cilvia Demo is amaaaazing.
@jtr1298
@jtr1298 4 жыл бұрын
All great points. I don’t know maybe Kendrick’s mainstream success puts a filter on it for me, cause as you mention Kendrick has a lot of songs with emotional depth and vulnerability. It may just be the way they go about in their process. I think Kendrick is the best to ever do it, (a discussion for another day lmao) but it seems to me that his style is traditional. Of course he experiments within his music, but to me he’s always an emcee, he’s always a lyricist, and that’s where his strengths lie. Zay has said he’s got the music for the vibers. The interview he did with sway they discuss his creative process. It’s very abstract, very much like he knows when it’s done, he doesn’t have to hit a certain guideline. I think about West Savannah and all the emotions that I can feel in that track. A track which is only 2 minutes and the a lot of the lyrics come from the chorus, but still very emotional. I don’t know. I tried to put it into words as best I could how I felt about their similarities cause I had been thinking about it recently and Jon mentioning the 2 brought it back up for me. But yeah, at least we all agree that Cilvia Demo is great lmao, and I’m eagerly anticipating The House is Burning
@Kosii08
@Kosii08 4 жыл бұрын
@@jtr1298 Fair enough, it's all left for interpretation anyway. I can see how the mainstream filter can make you feel that way though, but he always seems like he's so true to himself while trying to be an artist to the highest degree so it never really effected me. I relate to kdot on a lot stuff so that's probably my perspective is a bit different and vice versa... but yeah I can't wait for new Kendrick and Zay in the year 2037 lol. Also, YES Kendrick is the GOAT but that's a whole other discussion haha.

Great Video Jon! Knew you would love this tape since Rock Reacts. Sun's Tirade is a no-brainer at this point for one of your next reactions, but definitely give time for this project to breathe first, they're both great works of art, and they both give you different pieces of Isaiah Rashad. Keep up the great work!

THANK YOU JD THE PROPHET!!!!!!! I been in a few of your comment sections recommending this album and I'm so glad you had the reaction you did. Ecstatic right now P.S.: I think this album is so moving because of the level of his storytelling. He takes away all of the energy necessary for empathy and just puts you the fuck there (his flows/beats match perfectly as well, they exist as a solid unit to me, much like frank ocean's music) You're right as well, I've been listening to cilvia over and over since it came out in 2014.

Awesome reaction, Jon. Loved your thoughts about Cilvia Demo. The thing I like most about this album is that even though I've been listening to it for a long time, everytime I listen to it, the songs teleport me into the life and mind of the artist, Isaiah. The whole vibe takes you on a journey.
