I will never take that for granted. My wife's mother recently passed away and they were very close, so I know the pain losing a parent brings. I make these videos knowing that one day he will not be around. I'm not sure if it will be fun to rewatch us working together or if it will be too hard. Either way, I'm grateful for this time we have together.

I am absolutely shocked that there was so much in there! No wonder you were having issues. I guess it never pays to assume things are good, I will definitely make sure to watch mine! Your diesel crankcase will breathe much better too! I was happy to see the pony crank your diesel over easily. And it is amazing how well the later diesels start compared to the R series. They did a lot of improvement in their designs!

Dad lived his entire life on a farm (95 yrs). Farmed until he was 84 yrs. Dad told me this ,when he was boy someone hooked on to the front axle on a tractor just like you did. Tore the front axle out from under the tractor. Hook to the frame that is the strongest place.

FYI, I ran Champion J8Cs for a long time and never really had too many issues. I did switch to Autolite, again not too many issues, I recently found out about Autolite 456 plugs and plan to swap everything out with them for one simple reason....they are a LOT stubbier and give more room, on the backside of a 70, or as you noticed on an 80 with PS. Others use a Autolite 458, which is a hotter plug...and still stubby.
@jonelsonster

I think I saw those short little stubby plugs on the Lindt Bros website as I was looking for clutch parts. But they didn't list the number on the plug... So I'm glad you shared it here! Thanks!

I think you're right BUT you need to keep a CLOSE EYE on the crankcase pony oil level. That trash was from rats/squirells,chipmunks/varmints. Maybe from sitting all those years and maybe there. Just watch that oil level and it's full of oil as far as rings and such but should slow down smoking too much. Pop did a FINE job on the shed too. Looks like painting time one day too. Blessings to All Yall!
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 24 күн бұрын
Yes, I check the oil level every time I start it. And I've actually got some trick wiring diagrams from other commenters showing how to wire my ignition through a pressure activated switch to kill the power to the coils if the oil pressure ever drops below a set value. I'm looking forward to making that modification shortly.

@@jonelsonster Right! Have a bypass switch till the pressure builds up and then the prisseure switch will ground it out if the pressure drops. It'll sure work!

I had a similar sort of problem with my D2, but in my case, the crankcase was overfull due to the fuel shutoff valve leaking, and as a consequence, the crankcase and thus the carb experienced both positive and negative pressure preventing it from flowing fuel through the jets. So long story short, the fuel wouldn't deliver fuel and the pony wouldn't run
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 8 күн бұрын
I've come to learn many of the little quirks of these pony motors. It really is a rollercoaster of emotions. I really like the concept of the pony motor, and when they run, it's fun. But it's frustrating if they don't run. And you can't get the big engine started without it... So there are highs and lows.
@johndeere2cylfarmer
@johndeere2cylfarmer 22 күн бұрын
The main engine breathes through the pony and the pony air filter doubles as a crankcase vent filter for the main engine. If the filter gets plugged it pushs oil into the filter. Also if the diesel has blow by it will add oil to the pony air filter to lol. I'm glad my 830 has electric start😂, my 720 pony is very moody😂
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 8 күн бұрын
I get jealous of my dad's electric start 830 each time it starts up. But it doesn't build nearly as much character as a pony 😂

Electric starter conversion????????? 😉😉
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 24 күн бұрын
Where would the fun be in that? 😅 An electric start kit is about $2k. So far I've only spent about $200 on this pony motor. And hopefully this fixes the problems I've faced. But more than anything, I want to keep this thing mechanically intact the way it left the factory in Waterloo. Deere only made a total of 127 830-Industrial tractors. Of those, only 45 had pony motors. On top of that, I've been told by historical experts that there are only 16 pony start 830-industrials known to exist. So this is a relatively rare tractor, so for that reason, I'm determined to keep this one a pony start. But you are right, an electric starter is probably easier.

The air should not go through the oil. The oil should be low enough so the air heads down toward the oil (but gap between oil and screen) and then turns and goes up through screen. Any debris can not make the turn and goes straight into the oil and gets trapped. Very Important not to over fill oil for that reason.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 24 күн бұрын
Mine was way over full... For reasons explained throughout the whole video 😅. What you describe with large particles falling out of the inlet air is like the pre-cleaner sitting up on the top of the air inlet stack. Then, I thought the oil level in the oil bath is set so the air ever so slightly bubbles through the oil. Then the wire mesh screen separates catches the small droplets of oil before it exits the air cleaner. I'm not 100% positive on that, but I thought that's how they worked... At least on these old Deere tractors. Either way, all I need to do is fill it with the right amount of oil and it will do its job. The engineers before me knew what they were doing and designed it to work properly.
