Death of a loved one is never easy, but such an abrupt and unexpected loss is a trauma many can't understand and, of course, no decent human being would wish that understanding on anyone. I hope that, in time, your grief will lessen and you find more smiles coming to your face when you remember her and how fortunate you were to have your paths intersect and intertwine for so long.

Just before our love got lost you said I am as constant as a northern star And I said: Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar On the back of a cartoon coaster In the blue TV screen light I drew a map of Canada Oh Canada With your face sketched on it twice Oh, you are in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you, darling And I would still be on my feet Oh I would still be on my feet Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid I remember that time you told me, you said Love is touching souls Surely you touched mine cause Part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you, darling And I would still be on my feet I would still be on my feet I met a woman, she had a mouth like yours, she knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds and she said Go to him, stay with him if you can But be prepared to bleed But you are in my blood, you're my holy wine You're so bitter, so bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you, oh darling And I would still be on my feet I would still be on my feet

A little lyric play and detail that may not be all that obvious to folks who don't live in Canada where Joni is from, is the subtle reference to our Canadian National anthem, when she sings "Oh Canada . . . " . . . CLEVER song writing :-) She is a treasure . . .

This long comment doesn't sound like a comment on Joni; but it is, if you read until it mentions her. The voice you have is the voice you have, period. Whether you're Mariah Carey or Pavarotti or Tom Waits, you've got what you got. The great singers are the ones who steer into what they've got, and know how to play the instrument that has been put into their hands. Every single one of us sounds different in our 70s and 80s than we do in our 20s. You can hear that those masters who change as their voice changes. One of the best at reinventing himself has been Robert Plant, whose soaring, screaming, chaotic voice in Led Zeppelin was completely impossible for anyone--even his older self--to imitate. Reinventing himself the way he has in a strangely American Country vein has given him a whole second career that many of the singers who followed his style in the 1960s never achieved. Another one is Elton John, whose young voice is pleasing enough, agile, and marked by the rich falsetto that gave him perfect heights on songs like Rocket Man, and completely drove songs like Bennie & the Jets and Crocodile Rock. Then, around the time he did "I'm Still Standing," he almost literally had his falsetto surgically removed when they went in to do some surgery on his throat. He was never the same, and the guy who sings the Lion King soundtrack is almost completely different. What he has done, with the voice he has, is steer into his developing bottom end in a way he never did in the ''70s. It's a different kind of beautiful, and he gets it by not clinging to the past. A solid B+ goes to someone like Paul McCartney, who continues to write and record new music, which has matured right along with him. You can hear his vocal richness and comfort in the "Old Man Paul" songs from "New" or even "Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard," which is something like 20 years old now. The stuff he recorded in lockdown is still top-notch. Unfortunately, when he tours, the songs that people want to hear the most are still the songs he sang about 60 years ago, and you can hear the strain and the pitchiness as he tries to reproduce 25-year-old Paul in the original keys with the original arrangements. It's so beautiful and touching to hear him sing the duets he's put together with the tracks of John that he was able to save using the technology Peter Jackson developed for "Get Back." But John has been gone for more than 43 years now, and the tapes of him from their latest Beatles days are a decade older than that. So we're hearing a perpetually young John alongside a Paul who has lived a long life and has the natural mileage to show for it despite his uncommonly good health. Which brings me to Joni. We are lucky to have her at all after the brain aneurysm that took her away from us in the mid-2000s. She completely lost the ability to do many things, to the extent that she apparently had to relearn to play guitar like herself, right from scratch, by watching the copious KZbin videos of herself over the last 60 years. (So thank you for putting this up!). What I hear here is a woman--two women, in fact--who are completely in command of their own voices. Brandi Carlile is a powerhouse, to be sure, but you can hear just how much of her melodic sense she's inherited by listening to Joni her whole life. And it doesn't hurt that she has been blessed with a very similar voice to the one Joni had at her age. Joni does not have that voice anymore. Someone has taken it away and given her another. It will never sound the same, in the same way that Eric Clapton, once you take away the Gibson guitars he played with Cream and hand him the Stratocaster he's played since 1970 or so, will never sound the same as he sounded then, no matter how well he plays. It'll be... different. Joni is different. She has been handed a wholly new instrument, the voice of an old woman--a very old woman, medically speaking. And she plays it more perfectly, more beautifully and powerfully, than any old woman I've ever heard sing like that. It's weird for us, to see every stage of our celebrities at once. You know that funeral practice of putting up a photo of someone so different from the person we've known and loved for the last ten years? That's howe we know our celebrities. We all fell in love with Joni--at least, I did--when she was a lighthearted ingenue, playing at the Riverboat in Toronto, which was about a block from where I sit writing this. She played under her maiden name, Joan Anderson, for a couple years before the very short, very young marriage that left her with a new name just as she burst into the recording industry with such success that she couldn't very well change it back. And there was nothing like her, and will never be again. We'll never hear a voice like that one. Instead, we have this one. And it's beautiful, and so is she. A Cheshire Cat grin, the wise, miscievous smile that is always a little ironic, a little bittersweet, suits her so well in her old age--the way it would have suited Carrie Fisher, I think, if we'd been lucky enough to keep her a few more years, to this age or beyond. And then beneath it, in the applause at the end of this song, you see the guileless, pure, radiant smile that she had sixty years ago after those Riverboat sets, punching through sadness with joy, punching through tiredness with life, punching through the sarcastic cynicism we've learned to think of as "funny" with the hope and idealism we've learned to think of as "foolish." In this game of opposites, we ought to take hope and joy more seriously. We really ought to. I'm amazed, with zero rehearsal and zero foreknowledge, just how perfectly Joni's new voice finds the richest, most beautiful harmony a sixth below her former range--or a third above and an octave below, however you prefer. I'm amazed how cleanly she has progressed from the hallmark ease with which she sang in her youth--it all seemed so effortless--to the dramatic power of her straining to follow Brandi Carlile up on the crescendos. She's taken lessons from the Bruce Springsteen school of "if you can't make it sound effortless, let them hear every ounce of effort." I love Joni, and I always have. And I'm so glad she has fought her way back to us. I'm so glad to hear her play this new instrument as beautifully and perfectly as she played the old one. It reminds me, as I rocket as a musician and a human being toward my own old age and infirmity, that if I reach out with my mind and body and heart as far as I can, I can still make beautiful things with whatever strange, foreign instrument I have been given. After twenty years of occasional live gigging, a couple of indie bands, and a life in local bars and on festival stages, I recorded and released just one album of my original stuff. Just one commercial release. I am not Joni Mitchell, so of course it hasn't gone far. But that's not the point. During the pandemic, I recorded a bunch of songs for a series of "Couch Concerts." Just me and an instrument, in the apartment, to keep my sanity. My left hand wasn't working so great at the time. A lot of stubby notes. A lot of exhaustion. It's just as well I couldn't be on a stage anymore, if even two hours entertaining on my couch was so tiring. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis the following spring, when my left arm suddenly decided to go on strike, alongside other very nice and important parts of me. Like Joni, I am from Canada, which means I had some incredible medical care given to me, "real good for free." Like Joni, I had a very small body of KZbin videos that I could use to retrain myself to play guitar, almost from scratch, after a lot of nerve damage had been done. Like Joni, my spine is kind of a funny shape and I have a different voice now than I had in my 20s. Understandably, her recovery and return to the stage means a lot to me. It's something that has a very deep personal meaning for me. This old lady is, and is not, the ingenue I fell in love with the first time I heard her laugh at the end of "Big Yellow Taxi." She is, and is not, a completely different person. And I am glad, with my own years and my own mileage, my own little life of hopes and hiccups, my fanbase of adoring dozens instead of adoring millions, I can see my own fight reflected in hers. And I can, as a sick old man with a short time to make a sound in this world, fall in love with this old lady all over again. I started work on a second album this spring. I have Joni to thank for that.

That was Magic. Tears instantly welling up in my eyes and falling down my face as Joni sings, I’m filled with melancholy and joy.

Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said, "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar" On the back of a cartoon coaster In the blue TV screen light I drew a map of Canada Oh, Canada With your face sketched on it twice Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling And I would still be on my feet Oh, I would still be on my feet Oh, I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid I remember that time you told me You said, "Love is touching souls" Surely you touched mine 'Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling Still I'd be on my feet I would still be on my feet I met a woman She had a mouth like yours She knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds And she said, "Go to him, stay with him if you can But be prepared to bleed" Oh, but you are in my blood You're my holy wine You're so bitter Bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling Still I'd be on my feet I would still be on my feet

Dear Joni, I'm hoplessly in love you. You inspire me to live and love fearlessly. I love you Joni, no other woman will own me. I've lisitened to this song over and over, and over. I belive I've drank 3 cases of this song, and I'm still on my feet, drinking 3 cases more, and I will still be on my feet. I cry, and my heart opens, unafraid. I drift back to remembering you, there in my old Ford van, your 8-track singing to me, and Davida lying in my arms, sweet Goddess Davida. Looking back now I was so fortunate, so blessed and so much in love. Even now, your song and your voice, and your passion igninte that fire, and me, basking in the warmth of that fire, and you, and your song, and me, drinking in all of it, drinking it all in, on and on, and on, forever. Thank you Joni, I love you-
