It makes me SO happy that young people are discovering the great music of the '60s & '70s. Joni Mitchell is one of the best singer/songwriters of that era. 💖 "Blue" was my first encountered with her.

Joni gets a lot of justified recognition these days. After perusing your content for the first time today, a fellow female artist you might dive into, who doesn't get nearly enough recognition outside of France, is Francoise Hardy. Given your channel, her music and her fashion could be a gold mine of inspiration for you.

I found a copy of record one of "Skull and Roses" in an Isley Brothers record jacket. People obviously didn't keep up with their copies of that record. Joni is obviously a giant. This record was the first Joni record I picked up due to my familiarity with songs like "Big Yellow Taxi", "Woodstock" (the CSN&Y version), and "The Circle Game". Needless to say, I quickly picked up more of her records. She's a fantastic guitar player, and her willingness to expand her sound (even if it meant losing some of her audience) is admirable. I had a chance to see her live in 1998 (I think). She was opening for Dylan. I wasn't as familiar with her music at that point, but she was fantastic. I feel very fortunate to have seen her perform. I'm not a fan of Christgau either. Pretentious meatsack. The guy has "Christ" in his name and boy does he believe it. I think Lou Reed said it best: "Critics. What does Robert Christgau do in bed? I mean, is he a toe-fucker? Man, anal retentive-"A Consumer's Guide to Rock," what a moron. "A Study," by, y'know, Robert Christgau. Nice little boxes: B-PLUS. Can you imagine working for a fucking year, and you get a B+ from some asshole in the Village Voice?"

Having just discovered you (exactly why didn't I receive a pre-invitation?) I'm catching up on this fine episode. In a world of criminally underrated artists, Joni tops that list. The masses are ripe for rediscovery. You can be that vehicle that drives her into our living room. Court and Spark is a perfect album. Although obviously different, it hits those same 3 aspects you ascribed to Dark Side. We await your presentation. That being said, Hejira is my favorite Joni record. The album's sound, the richness and creativity of the her guitar playing added to Jaco's bass creates a sonic wonder.

Abby, please keep in mind I had a front row seat for all this music. There was no looking back in retrospect to discover good music. I have been a fan of good music since 1949-1950 and I’ve had the time to sort most of it out!😀

that's so true, i do lose sight of that sometimes! the most retrospective music really got in the '60s were the british groups worshipping american blues and roots music. (at least that's what i think as a blues girl)

Very cool shirt! Amazing illustrations Joni did. I always love her songs, but for some reason never looked into her. She's kind of like Jimi Hendrix in the sense that she figured out how to just directly plug her soul into to her instruments. Some people sound so much like themselves, it seems like they always existed. And she has great dynamics, which, if I may have a mini-hot-take, is pretty rare in pop/rock/folk.

I think Ladies of the Canyon is one of Joni's top 3 or 4 albums. The dead seriousness of some songs and overall level of songwriting and playing knocked me sideways when I first heard it. Sounds cliche, but a true work of art in the best sense. Totally agree about it being darker than Blue. On a lighter note, the reflexive lines in Ladies of the Canyon are fantastic (e.g., beveled mirrors in empty halls, empty halls . . .). Oh, and yeah, Christgau is full of it (and himself) most of the time.

I had just turned 13 when LADIES OF THE CANYON was released. I hadn't heard of Joni Mitchell, but as soon as "Big Yellow Taxi" came on the radio, it blew the top of my head off. I loved how loose and funny it was, and of course loved Joni's voice. LADIES was the first album I ever felt compelled to buy, and I was gratified to find "Big Yellow Taxi" was by no means the best song on the album. In retrospect I believe I learned a lot from Joni about adult romance and sexuality and the female point of view. While I've been a lifelong fan, I still think LADIES is Joni's best

I feel like Joni Mitchell was one of, if not, the best songwriter that came out of the 60s. Bob Dylan gets most of the attention, but Mitchell's music seemed to be more poetic and fit into the music, whereas Dylan's lyrics were front and center, and the music took a back seat. Oh yeah, and you're right, she is an insanely innovative and good guitar player.

Musically Dylan is barely interesting and as a guitarist and a vocalist he is mostly rubbish. He wrote his best songs on a type writer without any music attached.Joni Mitchell's music stands up on its own.She was a very good guitarist (and pianist) but not like that widdler widdler Marshall amplifier on loud / show off/ stadium rock / 1000 notes a second cliched manner that some people think is " good".

Dion's and the Judy Collin versions of Both sides now, is a favorite! You being into Dylan as much as you are, It’s a no brainer that Joni Mitchell resonates with you, for she is also a close counterpart to Dylan and they both have similarities to their artistry. Both have penned many amazing meaningful sonnet / songs, and these songs have been re-introduced by other artist to the general listening world In a more relatable commercial way. By Having other artist do the commercial leg work, the end results helps puts Dylan and Mitchell’s songs and names into everyone’s psyche. What’s great about this is it Lets Mitchell and Dylan have that public reach and stay true to their creativity , without being labeled selling out. Artist that come to mind In Dylan’s case is : The Byrd’s and Jimi Hendrix, while Joni Mitchell had CSNY and Judy Collins. Just to name a few. I can listen to both versions of the songs and find appreciation in the reworkings. It’s a mighty task to take on reworking such songs and to succeed at it. Joni’s original version of Wood Stock to me had more of a Joan Baez folk feeling relevant for the times. The message is more of a somber heads up warning that this change in culture can come, and by taking this journey by joining in on the festival proves it to be possible. It’s really a valid interpretation from her getting the Wood Stock festival’s information by watching it unfold on the TV news and then also hearing about it from Graham Nash. Where as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's version is more upbeat, it does capture the positive energy that they had felt by being there among this massive gathering, By using their creative ways, they have siphoned off that energy and put it into the song, Giving you that feeling that, “YES” this could really change everything. So, although years later it did not totally hold true afterwards, ( and I wish it did) It is still a great sentiment that holds true in the hearts of many of us. To get a bit of this Magic into your Universe, I would truly urge anyone who wants to connect to that spirit, to go catch a Graham Nash show, Look into this man’s eyes and listen to him sing, For he is still a true believer of that time, and it is refreshing to experience it live through song . And to take it that much further, Go to Bethel NY to were it all took place They have a great museum to see, and you can walk the grounds were these legends had once stood and look over the site, You will definitely feel a vibe there. It’s worth the pilgrimage! Sorry for the ramble, Keep up the good work ;-)

Thank you Abigail fer featurin' one o' my favorite albums by one o' my favorite artists! I recommend Paul Horn's cover version o' Blue from his album Visions. It has Joni on piano 'n wordless vocals...amazin'! I had a brief encounter with Joni when her Miles O' Aisles tour came to Austin. After the show I waited by the limo 'n sho''nuff Joni walked up with her arms full o' yellow roses. I asked her why she never answered any o' my letters 'n she replied..."Because I knew we'd meet just like this someday!" She handed me a rose (which I still have) 'n slipped into the back seat o' the limo seated between Tom Scott 'n Roger Kellaway. As they drove away I was reminded o' the lyric from the song For Free..."I have a black limousine 'n two gentlemen escortin' me to the halls..."!

I own the first 8 of Joni’s albums, up through and including Hejira. I can make a case for Ladies of the Canyon as my favorite, but I’m not sure. I am not as high on Blue as some, but I love the song River. I was not sure I was going to like Hejira when I first got it, but Coyote and Amelia are a powerhouse first two songs on the album. Thank you Abigail. We played "Ladies of the Canyon" over and over, friends and I, when it first appeared, (along with a British group called Pentangle, acoustic folk-jazz you might enjoy...) It was a time of transition... The Beatles disappeared in April 1970, the same month this record was released... So, it was a springtime of endings, which melancholy acoustic musings filled joyfully. I believe some of the enthusiasm and joy experienced in the 60s was a survival mechanism, perhaps an unconscious way of keeping the optimism delivered to America by John F. Kennedy alive. He was a forward looking fellow, who declared we would land on the moon within a decade, and so we did... There was an element of holding on to a positive vision lost to tragedy, that stirred invention and carried on with the Beatles, until the week this record was heard. The end of the Beatles and the 60s... It's not easy to convey this sense of collective loss because it seldom occurs anymore. The Rolling Stones went on forever, of course, but that's another story...

@@abigaildevoe Synchronicity sister... Court of the Crimson King was spinning here tonight for a high volume sundown as your Vinyl Monday stirred a configuration of memories which also included irresistible impulse to blast Zeppelin, so your take on the post-60s void is well founded! We did not sit with our sorrows long, as a summer of six rock festivals in six states followed for this music enthusiast, but I think another spur of the 70s folk singer-songwriter thing was the simultaneous perceived disappearance of Dylan... into his own "Self Portrait." Sweet bewilderment it was... :-)

Wow, Abigail! You have knowledge and context... very rare with the many reaction videos (I'm addicted to) that are out there where there is NO knowledge and NO context at all. I was 10 when Woodstock actually happened and I remember the movie when it was still in theaters (my Dad was a music nut/Dylan freak so I got soaked in this stuff as a kid). You are SPOT ON concerning Joni's original version of Woodstock the song... it is a dirge! I cheered when you said it because she saw it was an ending, not a beginning of that optimism you spoke of. The Vietnam war was the central disaster and Watergate the final nail in the coffin of American optimism and trust in the government and all these artists wrote within that context of chaos. The Beatles had it right on "Day In the Life" like Dylan had it right on "Like A Rolling Stone." But Joni brought all that down to personal relationships and self-examination with only tips of the hat to social commentary ("California" from Blue). Anyway, I will watch your future videos and... I think you would've made a very good hippie.

The music was great but it was an exhausting experience.

Another great video Abigail ! Joni Mitchell has been inspirational for so many songwriters and singers for generations, and yet for some people she will be just remembered for "Big Yellow Taxi", and possibly for having written "Woodstock". Like so many other female artists, Laura Nyro, Janis Ian, Buffy Saint Marie etc, I don't think enough credit is given for their wonderful music, which is covered by so many. Joni's recent version of "Both Sides Now", filmed at Newport. Folk Festival in July, is wonderful. Can't wait for Part 3 of your Woodstock series, keep it up please !

My personal favorite Joni Mitchell phaze is the Hejira/Hissing of Summer Lawns/Shadows and Light era, probably because I picked up the live album at the library. That was when I first started really listening to her music. I’d borrowed Night Ride Home before that (and loved it) but the material on Shadows and Light really clicked with me - particularly with players like Metheney and Pastorius in the band.

Ladies of the Canyon has always been my favourite of Joni's albums. The song 'For Free' had a major impact on me as a young person. I was also a big Paul Horn fan, so I loved hearing him on it. Incidentally, he did some instrumental jazz cover versions of her songs on his 1974 album Visions. As for Robert Christgau, I'm with you there. I often wonder whatever made him to want to be a music critic because he does seem to actually like music.

His list of A grade records from the 60's is quite a good starting point if you like this era of pop and rock music. He loved The " Layla" Album by Derek and the Dominoes and was right that Lou Reed was often at his best when he did n't try to make a masterpiece. He seems to like some of Brian Eno's more ambient records.

It's a fine album but my favorites is "For the Roses" which unfortunately falls between "Blue" and "Court and Spark" so it tends to get overlooked. It's just as confessional as "Blue" but more mature in both production and her singing. "Blue" does have my favorite Joni song though, 'This Flight Tonight' which is mystical. For a more cynical view of Woodstock give a listen to 'Baba O'Riley' by The Who. Yes they played the concert. So did another great band Jefferson Airplane with Marty Balin still present. The only person who I kind of liked performing a Joni Mitchell song back in the day was Tom Rush doing "The Circle Game". Joni actually gave Tom Rush the song to record back in April of 1968, two years before Joni released her version of the song. Most young people back in the late 60s always identified "The Circle Game" with Tom Rush's performance although most knew it was written by Joni Mitchell originally. Just do a search on KZbin and Tom's version will appear. I like Tom's version, always loved the song but only heard Tom singing it until Joni Mitchell released her version on "Ladies of the Canyon". there’s an interview clip of crosby that i LOVE where he chats about how challenging it was to date a fellow songwriter - he’d be so excited to play her a new song he wrote that week, and then joni would play him 3 better songs she wrote that day. priceless!

ahh I love joni mitchell, I got into her music about a year ago, the summer before i started my final year of university. my fav song from her is river, as i grow older i relate to the song whenever Christmas comes. her songwriting is out of this world. Also as a zoomer (lol) as well, I think we've grown to become pessimistic cause we don't have that escapism, the 60s was a turbulent time and it truly shows through the music and the performances that came out of it. It's probably why I listen to music from that time, even though it wasn't exactly a nice time for people of colour.

The Circle Game, just listen to the lyrics. It's about growing up if I'm correct. Love that song. Big Yellow Taxi is a great song too. I remember not liking the Counting Crows version that much. And It's been a long time since I heard her original version of Woodstock. I had these CDs of music from this time period. I had one that had some very cool psychedelic music. I this one CD that had Joni's original version of Woodstock and back then, I have never heard of it. I did hear the Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young version. Oh man! What a great version. I do have Court & Spark on vinyl with Help Me, Raised On Robbery, and Free Man In Paris. Here's a little bit of trivia for you. Stevie Nicks, who was member of Fleetwood Mac once dropped acid to Court & Spark. It like gave the album a new dimension to her.

David eventually wrote a song about Floyd released as slip away. Lastly I beg you to somehow see the epix channel 4 hour Laurel canyon documentary. Btw being an oldie I own over 5000 LPS and 45s. Extreme coherence today, Abby! Sad re. young folks feeling so cynical and powerless now. As far as such generalizations go, we Boomers are far from blameless re. eventually setting the stage. ("Brown acid" anyone?) Joni was brilliant, of course. Beyond the beautiful songwriting and singing, there were those unique open tuned guitar stylings.

So going backwards I'm doing the series 321 not 123 which must be annoying. Deja Vu was an album I fast backwarded to when I found VM. She is a good musician the piano on free is elaborate. I'm attracted to the intensity of Rainy Night and those atmospheric choral parts. There's similarities for me with D Crosby in things like Priest ( modal accents & some phrasing) but who's influencing who. Yes the keyboard intro to Woodstock a prelude to something 'exhausted'? I'm reminded of the Mark Gertler painting Merry Go Round during Circle Game. Personal response I know. Loving these vids still the insight that observation about the duality of the cover. I don't think you could have made the Abbey Rd or KC vids back then. Now you leave all competition way way behind.

I hadn't thought of it quite that way, but I can see it now. :D Both of those songs were written at about the same time.. 1966 or so..? :D Tom Rush included Urge for Going in many of his sets throughout his career.. loved his semi-recent live versions where he also described how he'd met Joni etc. His voice suits that song very well.

Abigail, as a Boomer (1952) and member of the Woodstock generation I was amused and sort of touched by your comment that the Woodstock generation should feel lucky that we had what you termed "a sense of optimism" as you feel that your generation was somewhat deprived of that. I don't, in any sense, disagree with you. But the knowledge that a lot of my tribe "grew up" to become yuppies and obsessed with materialism is more than ironic. Take Jerry Rubin, for example. In 1970 someone gave me his book "Do It!: Scenarios of the Revolution" (he struck me as an asshole). He evolved from being a far left wing radical and member of the Chicago Seven to a Wall Street stockbroker. At least he died as something of a revolutionary. He was struck by a car while jaywalking. My favorite Joni album is "Court and Spark". I just wish she'd given up the cigarettes sooner. Another reason I'm glad I subscribed to your channel is...Robert Christgau is a complete asshole.

The end of the sixties was a weird mix of optimism and terror. We landed on the moon and had Woodstock, but we also had the RFK, MLK assassinations, the Manson killings and Altamont, which was the last nail on the coffin for the 60s. People got disillusioned that change didn’t happen immediately, but change comes slowly if it comes at all. Like they said in the eighties, don’t stop believin
