The best part of the Laurel Canyon documentary was when someone was saying how peace and love filled the air, how everyone could just walk into everyone else's house and be fed, share a joint, and jam. It was all so idyllic and the music reflected this..."Then we heard The Doors"....

Hi Abby, I'm a Court and Spark kind of guy and love a lot of Joni's songs. The first time I heard her version of Woodstock off of my Ladies of the Canyon LP, I was thrown! Such a cold, somber accompaniment. I think she may have seen the future of peace and love and all that and was in mourning already. Woodstock was definitely the peak of all peaks for that generation. I always loved the Matthew Southern Comfort version of the song Woodstock. When are you gonna do Elton Johns' Tumbleweed Connection? You will not be dissapointed. 😎

'Ladies of the Canyon' joined Pentangle's 'Basket of Light' in constant rotation on the turntable where friends and I hung out Spring 1970. We played nothing else for a week or so I recall. We weren't rocked out, just mesmerized by the endless clear vocal range of both Joni and Jacqui McShee and all the acoustic wonder in company. When 'Circle Game'' ended 'Light Flight' began as we played these records back to back for hours in silence, girls and boys, out of school with nowhere to go, we kept these records spinning like a destination we were always on our way to and almost there as long as the needle was down in the grooves.

As a 65 yr old jazz pianist I started listening seriously to Joni and Miles and Keith Jarrett in Jr. High. I was 12 in 72. I listened alot to Blue and all the "flower child" albums but truly noticed her as highly dimensional adult (poet/composer) starting with Court and Spark but really blooming with "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" (her least acclaimed LP) an accurate comentary on the disintegration of the achievable dreams of 60s counter culture. Steely Dan and Hunter Thompson in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas also effectively address this issue. It was definitely an issue for those of us who weren't happy about it!!. Here she applies her diamond sharp intellect to reveal compelling poetic insights about everything from her favorite painter to the misuses of girl power to the allure of materialism and the powerful escape offered by those "bad" drugs about which many of my advanced years know way too much. Im not talking about the mind expanding type. It was all just too brainy for "Chelsey Morning" crowd I reckon but anyone capable of writing Blue is just gonna be smarter and more expansive than their ignorant pigeon holes.

I am finally able to begin my own thread in these comments about experiences I had with LOtC. As a kid in junior high school, I observed how metal and new wave were all the rage in the early ‘80’s. People in my age group tended to view music from just half a generation earlier as passé, irrelevant or un-relatable (with the possible exception of Led Zeppelin). I was a Zep-head myself but as far as active bands, I was all about Rush at the time. That more or less fueled my interest in other Canadian acts, especially pre-Rush. I heard some of Joni’s early music on commercial free public FM radio at the time but didn’t see the appeal or start actively listening to Joni until after high school. By that time, I was obsessed with electric jazz and the involvement of some session players during what I call Joni’s middle period (Court & Spark, …Summer Lawns and Hijera). Around 1995, I went into a used record store and went into a box of records on the floor for ten cents each in poor condition. I placed a dollar and some change on the counter and came away with at least a dozen albums with torn jackets (all dating roughly from 1967-75), LOtC being one of them. By that time, I was familiar with the 3 fan favorites that close out side 2 through cover versions by other artists. I was long past overdue to hear it at length, especially because of how strongly I was feeling then about Blue and having that need to explore it’s immediate predecessor. People I have spoken to over the years who are not as analytical about recorded music as I am fail to see Joni’s value. They are dismissive of her singing voice and find her songs boring, stereotyping her as a ‘60’s hippie girl act (from my own experience). Even my own mother (not much older than Joni herself) seems to remember her only as a solo unaccompanied act, that her recorded output consisted almost entirely of what sounded to her like mere blueprints, rough cuts or demos. The importance of her early work cannot be stressed enough! Copies of Clouds and Seagull were immediately sought out to add to my collection, by which time I was ready for and highly appreciative of them. This video was an absolute joy! I didn’t realize I needed a refresher on LOtC, so thank you 😊

Woodstock is a masterpiece of a song and performance. circle game is really pretty but you have to read and hear Plath's i ride earth's burning carousel to learn how a metaphor can be left hanging, gathering power, without killing it. you do joni justice by this video. next week's choice. i can't wait I won't wait. i have to wait. be sensible. that's right i'll be sensible about it. but it was a close thing.

Abby, your analysis of the late 60s versus the early 70s throughout this review may be the best description of what went wrong with the counterculture that I've heard. Well done! 20:45 Wearing a dress made from a gunny sack pattern made me think of "Joni Be Good"... 24:38 "She's got a sense of humor"?! I think the lyrics to "Big Yellow Taxi" and her high-low-laugh at the end prove that. 32:23 DDT was a popular bogey...substance for pop and rock composers in the 60s and early 70s. Check out Iron Butterfly's "Slower Than Guns" from the "Metamorphosis" album for a direct reference. And 18:56 - love the "yoinked" and related sound effect! While this is a great, detailed review (as usual), I'm a bit concerned at the number of "re-dos" you're doing when there are so many other classic albums that need your attention on this channel. I understand how you are not satisfied with some of your original reviews, but I humbly request you move forward through the back catalog. Thank you for your patience with my impatience!

By the time you broke down Woodstock, I had tears filling my eyes, for nothing tells a tale of delusion quite like that Peace & Love dream. We all have our own ideas and perspectives on the ways how things should be. And still some absolutely refuse to let another human being dance free. Ladies of the Canyon is at best my 5th favorite Joni album. Which just goes to show how great Joni Mitchell is. To say I prefer Court and Spark, Blue, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and Hejira (and probably Mingus & For the Roses) is no slight against Ladies, which for 99% of artists would be far & away the best thing they ever did. She's just so... massive. Joni has GRAVITY. The light of lesser stars bends around her. And I say this as an old punk who came here because my friend Deanna directed me to your MC5 video. If her forays into jazz (cosigned by no less than Charles Goddamn Mingus his damn self) didn't make it clear: Joni transcends genre. And just about everything else. I don't have a "favorite artist" - there's just too much good music out there to pick a fave. But if someone said their fave was indeed Joni Mitchell... well, you could do a lot worse.

Not because it's "jazzy" - I'm a big enough jazz fan - it just doesn't have what these first handful of records has. The title track is one of my favorites of hers. While it doesn't come close to her best record - For The Roses and Blue are firmly entrenched as #1 and #2 for me - it's easily her 3rd best record, and that means it's essential listening.

Interesting that you view the protagonist of “For Free” as unlikeable. I always viewed it as Joni examining her own career and having a come-to-Jesus moment when spotting this man playing for free on the side of the rode. It’s as if Joni saying “What am I doing? Have I sold my soul to the music industry while this man is just out here playing his music to anyone who will lend an ear?” It’s a pretty endearing track nonetheless and it always move me to tears every time I hear this and Lana’s version. Plus I can’t help but be disappointed that you never mentioned, probably the hardest use of a Joni sample, Janet Jackson sampling “Big Yellow Taxi” for her song “Got ‘til It’s Gone.” That song actually got me interested in Joni Mitchell. I just love the way Janet carried on the message of that songs into hers. Plus when I use to work for Panera, that song was playing constantly. So now the chorus is just seared into my subconsious.

Great review. Every Joni album through the 70's is going to make for an interesting breakdown. I'll take issue with the critique of 'The Conversation' though, there's nothing wrong with a song that reflects a genuine behaviour engaged in by both men and women, just because we've slapped an arbitrary label on it in the modern world. Nor should a song have to live up to some kind of standard set by ideology or modernity. This is Joni Mitchell, she writes about genuine feelings and situations that most people can relate to. AD knows this of course, but I don't think a song needs to be called out because it makes Joni sound like a 'PickMe'.

Look at all those ducks! And then mention of a seagull on the previous album. Dang! No wonder she dated a guy from The Byrds! 😁

Joni Mitchell begets CSNY, Linda Ronstadt begets The Eagles. I don't know what this signifies, but it seems significant. :D

I would say Neil Young, Not to go off topic (and I am) I would love to hear your impression on the Canterbury scene of London in the 60s... Soft Machine Vol 1 and 2 and Third..as well as Kevin Ayers Whatevershebringsshesings...Possibly Nilsson Schmillson album (nothing to do with Canterbury) Anyhoo,I really like your vids you know your shit. Greetings from New France
