This song is beyond beautiful and is so heart wrenching because I think that each of us has at some point or another, had to look into that mirror and realize that we are the victim of our own crime and that is one bitter pill to swallow. Holidays are hard times to be alone and that loneliness and sorrow is compounded when the only reason it is so, is due to our own actions. Your reaction and breakdown were both perfect.

Check out another song on Court and Spark - 'Raised on Robbery'. It's about a nickel mining town in Northern Ontario ( Sudbury) and the Empire Hotel, one of the old drinking establishments in the town. It's a snapshot of what goes on in the hotel, lots of drinking, watching hockey games (especially the Toronto Maple Leafs) and prostitution. The lyrics capture that culture so well and of course the music is outstanding as usual. Another Canadian folk hero that sings about the working class Canadian culture is a guy by the name of 'Stompin' Tom Connors' same Sudbury culture but a totally different musical genre - C&W - northern Ontario style - his song title is Sudbury Saturday Night. Interesting comparison about the same subject.

Your review is so spot on. What phrasing! What chords! What lyrics! What a voice! Joni is a poet and a tender-hearted soul. Regret and remorse combined with Christmas is achingly sad and so real. Jingle Bells in a minor key so unexpected. Joni is completely intentional and her latest song is always your favorite.

Jingle Bells is probably the most up‐tempo, merriest, Merry Christmas, Christmas carol of all Christmas carols, ever. How ingenious to play it in a minor key as an intro/outro to this piercing lament?!! I remember at that time that she was treated so dismissively as a "confessional songwriter". I guess that was supposed to be a bad thing. I also love that all these poetic songs are self written and that the music is all her own. This is a favorite for me as well. You won my subscription with this one. Thanks. I'd like to recomend her song, COLD BLUE STEEL AND SWEET FIRE. Peace.

Joni was Canadian, but living in Southern Cali with all the biggest names in the folk-rock scene of that time. She often referenced her Canadian roots in her lyrics. Although immensely talented and beautiful, she went through lovers like sand through an hour glass and it caused her so much heartache. But she gave us some amazing songs based on those experiences.

As you live "River" so, listen to Joni's sublime "Lesson In Survival" from her utterly exquisite "For The Roses" album (1972). In my opinion, her best album was this album that also contains the songs All I Want, California, and My Old Man, which was about Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash. I believe this album is from 1971, and it is one of the defining albums of that year, for sure!❤ All her early albums are great.

Taylor Swift wants to be Joni Mitchell but she's a poor imitation both in talent, singing and musicality but also in her writing. She doesn't really have an ability to write a song this well or this emotionally honest. Sometimes you can have all the money and fame in the world but what you really want eludes you. It's the Citizen Kane rosebud effect.
