This lively celebration was practiced by enslaved African Americans in eastern North Carolina, and was recreated at the 2017 African American Cultural Celebration at the NC Museum of History.

Actually Jonkonu originated in Jamaica. It's not an Akan tradition but rather an amalgamation of Guinea and Yoruba influences. It spread to Bahamas from Jamica however it is celebrated completely differently in Bahamas from its original origin and intention. It can be seen on other Caribbean islands but originated in the Parish of St. Mary, Jamaica to mock the lifestyle of plantation owners. I'll provide an educational link to this comment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJnInqN4bdZ1qtE

Interesting! I have some Guinea or Senegalese heritage (still figuring out which) but I feel like we never discuss any traditions that they brought with them. I always hear about Yoruba, Congolese and some Igbo traditions that were passed down.
