3 is not allowed in base 3. You are allowed only to choose from 3 digits.... 0, 1, and 2.

I find it easier to just write out the numbers in the base and then you know what to carry in a simpler way/ like 1,2,3,4,10,11,12. So you know the 5th number, 5=10

is it the same for all bases?? what if the base is 14 then when you add a column, it sums up to 10, is it 0 carry 1 or it would be A??

Base fourteen would have place values of ...196, 14, 1. The digits would be 0-13 where the "digit" 10 would be A, 11 would be B, 12=C and 13 would equal D.
