Many churches aren't singing hymns anymore and I miss that !!

I have to disagree with Jon on one point. At 19:45, he suggested that gospel music was at one point “uneducated, simple and not ultra deep”. Brotha, that is far from correct. I submit to you that gospel music was defined by a specific, deep and complicated experience, and the message was filled with hope for a people that sought to not only have a seat at the table but actively looked for their “blessed hope” beyond this life. A lot of the CCM and even gospel music today has no true message. Repeating the same 7 word line over and over isn’t a message to me. That’s one of the reasons I like Jon’s music. It may not sound like traditional gospel but he consistently comes with a message. There are very few artists these days that can really say that. I submit to you that the more “educated” we have become and have a small seat at the table, I wonder if we have gotten a little comfortable and moved away from seeking “the blessed hope” so much, therefore it’s not reflected in our music as much. And that cuts across all Americans, not just white or black. Just my opinion.

I think our beauty IS in the improv/ soul. AND our education is informal. I moved to Cali from the Midwest and was a little disheartened to realize that the dominant culture took our informal education, watered it down, renamed it, and told us we lacked education. Our children are not grasping that organic “thing” that Black people have bc they’re just not spending enough time under their elders/ teachers.

Gospel or Christian music, black or white, many artists have talent but lack the anointing, and the music shows.

A great point was brought up about the lingering segregation of the body of Christ. I personally stopped listening to stations like K-LOVE because they only play white artists with a sprinkle of Lecrae (the white church’s favorite token lol). My final straw came when they repeatedly played a white remake of Tasha Cobbs’ “This is A Move” song, but wouldn’t play the original song. 😒 This is my Maverick City Music is so necessary.
@cup_of_reason53933 жыл бұрын
in MIchigan K Love took the black music channel and they push the black gospel music channel to an unknown network where you only can here it in certain areas. Then, like you said will not play black music, playing parities like Shackles by mary mary but by a white artist and this is a move by hillsong only. So I've been on Maverick for a while, we need to stand together and cause a shift and change.
@bracken57493 жыл бұрын
It's sad. K-Love literally acknowledged Michael W. Smith behind Way Maker, took all the credit, yet it's originally by Sinach. Try vice versa with a "white song", you can find yourself sued. 🙄

Does our worship bring us into the Presence of God or does it really cater to our flesh? Some gospel music has some doubt and unbelief in it. I learned over the years what the Lord approves--that which honors Him for real. Bless you guys.

This was a great conversation. Having grown up in the COGIC and COG arena, I miss the style of music we used to have regularly in church. I find myself making my kids watch a lot of videos or listen to songs like "God don't need no matches" 😆 just so they can have this style of music as part of their experience. And I also make them practice clapping on 2&4 because they definitely default to 1&3!!! 🤦🏽♀️😆. Keep up the great conversations you guys!!

I can’t describe how much I really enjoyed this show! And the topic is so time-sensitive, and you deliver it with seriousness and with humor! I really have been looking for gospel musician podcasts. I was curious if other musicians were thinking the same things as me. Thank you so much Jonathan! Also I just live the creativity with the transitions: using Jonathan’s trademark “eeeee-eeehhh” Cycles sound (aka “Jonathan’s mating call” according to Jonathan’s 30th B’Day McRoast show). EDIT: If you all have a conference about this topic I will be there!

Whether black or white, does what and how we worship really glorify God and is He pleased with it? Is is from the HOLY SPIRIT that is going to matter with Jesus Christ our Lord. Race will not matter when the Son of God appears. Amen.
@valeriejones38083 жыл бұрын
Learn to laugh. Our ancestors music had rhythm and from our soul. Black people know race won't matter in heaven. We didn't create that construct nor the separatism. White people did. We do have cultural differences and its okay.
@joycelockett64633 жыл бұрын
The Lord showed me years ago that the culture believers need to adopt is the culture of Heaven. We need to remember Satan has a very organized kingdom and he knows how to divide the ONE race God created and that's the HUMAN RACE.@@valeriejones3808

@@joycelockett6463 The scripture tells us that the nations will bring their glory into His kingdom. We "African Americans" are the children of Judah. Judah means praise. We have our glory to offer to God the way He has given His anointing to flow through us. Another family/nation of the earth will glorify God the way He has blessed them to flow, but we are all still worshipping & praising the most High. The families of Japheth will praise him the way they do. They family of Ham & Shem will praise Him with the rhythm for we are the rhythm nations. It's all to the glory, honor & praise of God, His Majesty. It was a lie when they told blacks not to use drums, make a joyful noise & dance, when all these commands are in scripture just as it is written to sing sweetly & sing hymns unto God. When it is from the heart, He accepts it.

Kenya is probably one of the most adaptive countries I know of because we sing all of that, including other African countries' styles. Could stem from the fact that there are many tribes here and we're always borrowing from each other or adapting our music to the different crowds...as long as the people follow :)

Most (if not all) rap music is NOT authentically written. The lyrics are 'given' to the rappers to negatively indoctrinate a people, giving artists 20 pieces of silver for 15 minutes of fame. It's something we really need to pray about.
@ConsuelaEsseboom3 жыл бұрын
I grew up in an all black church and to be honest, I used to just clap too whenever there was a praise break. Might even just tap my hand on my thigh or on top of my other hand Dumbledore style. I've never been into praise breaks because so often it felt more emotional to me than spiritual. Hoopla really is the right word. Like entertainment. Also, being the introvert and highly sensitive person that I am I don't like too much noise. Sensory overload is always around the corner. But my attitude has always been that's my personal preference. Just because something isn't for you, does not mean it is neccessarily wrong.

So I have a completely different POV. My first church was actually a Pentecostal Church. And Pentecostal churches sing “black gospel” music. I don’t think it’s gentrification. I think that’s how their movement started. I also had Hispanic friends growing up. Texas is influenced by Hispanic culture. The 1 and 3 is normal for Hispanic churches. I definitely think that we need to fight for our roots but if Tasha Cobbs Leonard sings Mary Had a Little Lamb, it’s not going to sound like if Kari Jobe sang it. Both versions will be anointed but you can not ever take the rich heritage that is in the DNA of Leonard away. But I will say, I listened to Fantasia sing Total Praise and it was something I’ve not heard in a long time. Great discussion guys.
