If she got in instead of Cloud, then not much would have changed except for a drop in FF representation in smash players. Especially if her moveset changed. An alternative to this is to say that what if Terra got into smash instead of cloud, but not due to it just being a character decision. But what if she was actually more popular than Cloud? That would mean FF6 would be the most popular game in the series instead, and it also would mean Squares relationship with Nintendo would have been disastrous for Square. See FF7 was a huge gamble. Nintendo and Sony originally made the Playstation together as a system to upheave the conventions of the 90s. Nintendo, unbeknownst to Sony, betrayed them and went with Panasonic as a developer for their new system due to contract issues with Sony. Sony was furious because Nintendo just presented the Panasonic system without ever telling Sony. So they took their design for the Nintendo Playstation and turned it into the Sony Playstation. What does FF6 and FF7 have to do with this? Well, Square and Nintendo had an almost exclusive relationship at this point in time. So when they proposed their requirements for FF7 and what the N64 would have to be capable of to run such a game, Nintendo ignored them and went with a cartridge system instead of a disc system. This meant that FF7 would need to be changed, or hop systems. Well, the perfect candidate for a system hop was the PS1! Nintendo was desperate for 3rd party support and JRPGs on the N64, so when square jumped ship it strained their relationship with Nintendo for decades, to the point where Nintendo didnt even allow them to make games on their system for a while. With FF7 being their main focus, Sony poured millions and millions into the ad campaigns and Square in general. See square, cut off from Nintendo, wasnt making much money and their work on FF7 was so costly it was driving them to financial ruin. So if FF7 failed, Square would cease to exist and Sony would have taken a crippling hit. The fact that FF7 succeeded and launched the already popular PS1 into new heights is what forged the relationship with Square and Sony and helped to cement Playstation even further as the gaming brand. Nintendo was no longer the king of the market. So, Cloud was chosen to go into SSB4 despite the animosity between the companies (I mean until Seph made it in Ultimate, there were only 2 songs from FF, that was intentionally done by Square Enix). In doing so, they gave their most popular character to one of Nintendos most popular series. It marked an era of mutual agreement between the two companies. Thats why Cloud in Smash 4 is such a big deal. So for Terra to get into Smash she has to usurp Cloud, and for that to happen FF6 has to Usurp FF7. What could that mean? Well, if FF6 was more popular there are 2 cases for why that would happen. Either 1. FF6 on SNES was just magically more well recieved and sold more. 2. FF6 was rereleased on PS1. Lets go with 2 for this part. If FF6 was rereleased on PS1 as a complete 3D remake similar to the demo/Proof of Concept they had for a 3D FF6, then it would have assuredly sold more than the original and been hailed as a technical marvel and fantasy masterpiece in opposition to the steampunk masterpiece that FF7 was. FF6 would have been the title that influenced the rest of FF, and as such games like FF8 and FF9 as well as each game after would be drastically different. FF8 leaned heavy into what FF7 was and improved upon it graphically, but if FF6 was more popular then we would have received a game that was more in tune with its middle earth and wizardry inspirations instead, still with better graphics and proportions. FF9 would never have happened because there would enever be a need to return to form. Whos to say what happens from there? Its interesting to say the least. But what about the other option, option 1? What if FF6 on SNES outsold FF7 on PS1? Well, that'd mean that either FF6 sold more than what FF7 actually sold, or that FF7 performed worse than it actually did. If the former is true, then history doesnt actually change. But if the latter is true... well, Square probably wouldnt exist. If FF7 was not a massive success, Square would have lost so much of their own money that they would go bankrupt and have to be shut down or absorbed by another company. Since they would have hurt Sony so dearly, Sony would not have bailed them out through purchasing options. As a result, no more Square, no more FF, no Kingdom Hearts or anything. Also, due to their massive loss, Sony would have had a much more conservative approach to RPGs and games as whole. This damage would likely have greatly inhibited Sony's success for several generations, enabling Nintendo and Microsoft to have a more Dominant position in the industry. Gaming as a whole would be so different. So to answer your question, what if Terra was in smash instead of Cloud? Well, maybe not much, but maybe a lot. Thanks for sitting in on my ponderings.
