Invaders from Mars just gets better with age. Simply because it is one of the few films from a child's point of view. Plus having a director who is without question the greatest set designer in film history using his incredible imagination plus the score, photography, and use of a choir to set a unique truly original film.

The soundtrack of this film is what really stuck with me. All of those choir voices make it sound more like a biblical epic than a science fiction film. It also adds to the otherworldly feel the film has which makes it great.

For children who watched this film either on TV or in its original run, this had to be one of the most frightening scifi movie experiences. There's a lot of traumatic stuff here that is bothersome emotionally; to begin with, your parents being removed and suddenly replaced with evil replicas? Holy moly! And the doppelganger father slapping the boy, that always gets me. As an adult this movie still gives me the creeps. It is simply well made even though it is simple and not a big budget extravaganza. That area in their back yard, and the wonderfully eerie musical score (cannot imagine this movie without that) ... so effective. Now, the 1980s remake was all right but it did not capture this film's power or disturbing mood.

Absolutely, 80s remake not nearly in the same league. In my imagination, only Guillermo Del Toro could hope to successfully recapture this nightmare into an updated form.

I just watched this for the first time on a vhs tape just last night. Normally these old movies bore me to tears, but these was an enjoyable watch all the way through. The fact that the adults listened to the boy and the military got involved was definitely satisfying after who knows how many other movies where nobody believes the protagonists until it’s too late.

It's been so long that I can't recall if I saw it on TV or one of the older films they use to put on at the drive-in before the new ones would start, but I do remember being completely drawn in, mesmerized and terrified at the same time. It even had me scared the rest of that night and a few days later wondering if that was in some way happening somewhere. A pretty big feat considering all the old and "modern" sci-fi (60's/70's) I had already seen, read or listened to. Even watching this review I got goosebumps at one point remembering. As always, a great review; entertaining and informative.

The brilliant Menzies' production an direction, Seitz's fabulous, imaginative, terrifying, surreal fever dream photography, Blake's gene-busting concept and screenplay, the off-world-sounding soundtrack of celestial alien voices, and the bravura performances of the entire cast come together to make "Invaders From Mars" one of the most cinematographically excellent and terrifying science fiction films of all time, particularly terrifying to its express target audience, children. There have been other great foreign invasion films (not including "A Hard Day's Night" :D) like Pal's wonderful, visually stunning "War of the Worlds", and other highly artistic and ambitious sci-fi productions like "Forbidden Planet". However, none of them nor another film I can think of uses the insidious psychological plot device of child's formerly loving, reliable and trusted authority figures being surgically converted into strange, nasty, conspiratorial alien-controlled automatons. Because of this, some might arguably accuse IFM of being inappropriate for impressionable children (are there any other kind?), for whom, of course, it was made. This use of this deeply disturbing concept in particular made/makes IFM far more frightening for children, particularly for the children of the still ultra-straight, conformist, old-world culture of the 1950s than other films of its kind, and sets it apart and above all other similar films(if thee are any) in this regard. Visible zippers on the aliens' velour costumes and other less-than-amazing effects (to our modern eyes, at least - it was made in 1952) notwithstanding, there are many scenes in this film that are visually outstanding to us even today, in any genre. IFM has too often been underrated, not completely or fairly evaluated for its seminal outstanding virtues, and accordingly, not usually placed where it belongs, very high upon the lists of the greatest 1950s sci-fi films. There is so much more to say about the extraordinary qualities of this unique film; however, a good, open-eyed and open-minded look at it is, I think, the best way to come to truly appreciate it for what is a masterpiece and one of the greatest examples of fantasy cinema.
@RobHollanderMusic2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. This is an excellent piece and I'm glad to subscribe. This particular film, along with the usual suspects of great 50s sci-fi, have always had a particular grip on me as I was at the youngest age when I saw them. This and "The Thing", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "Them" scared the living daylights out of me as a kid, and "Invaders From Mars" still spooks me as an adult! As you point out, Menzies was a genius and between his visual sorcery, the haunting choral soundtrack, the idea of parents as enemies, and shocking unforgettable images (as reprised in the final montage) this film still has a unique, disquieting impact that has never been emulated.

I remember seeing Invaders From Mars at the kiddee matinee in the late 50's as a 8 year old kid. When I got home I demanded to see the back of my mom's neck. She thought I was crazy but finally relented. What a relief! There was no needle of red blub sticking out. You can never trust your parents. I didn't like the British version with no dream sequence. How come little David was wearing a sweater vest in the observatory scene in the British version but not wearing one in the original version? I have an original lobby card framed and hanging on the wall along with numerous other lobby cards from other 50's sci-fi films. I also have a huge poster framed. Both are seen towards the end of this video. This sci-fi is one of my all-time favorites.

The movie had a very dreamlike look about it. Especially the police station. No police station looks that way. But to a little kid in his dream, it would. That's why I like the original American ending better. A dream with a Rod Serling twist of having the saucer crash at the end just like in his dream.

I remember watching Invaders From Mars on television on a Saturday night and it scared me silly. My sister saw it and she and my father laughed when the possessed mother says that David Hunt’s fears and suspicions were the result of, “Reading those trashy science fiction magazines.” I remember feeling so relieved that it was a nightmare.But the film also showed that the story may have been a nightmare, it ends with the possibility that it may be a reality the next time. I also think the film was a Cold War era film because of the idea of people becoming different from the way we know them and walking among us. I have not seen the 1986 remake. Perhaps I will one day. For a low budget film, it really delivered the goods. Great video!

I just watched the Rifftrax version of this movie yesterday. Usually they and The MADs and Mystery Science Theater 3000 pick truly bad movies to riff and make fun of. I was surprised they did Invaders from Mars because it actually is not a bad movie. And the vibrant color of the film and the production design is miles ahead of the usual type of old movie they have fun with. If I had seen this as a kid it would have frightened me since I was scared by movies such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the Project UFO show that was on TV in the 70s. As a kid I feared seeing a UFO land in the field beside my house so I "got" this film from the get go! Thanks for doing this video and making me appreciate its place in movie history even more.

I have the official, long out of print Wade Williams DVD and it is NOT worth the outrageous prices demanded for used copies on Amazon.

One of my favorites, growing up!! I love these classic sci-fi/horror movies, from the '50's!! I saw this for the first time, when I was a small kid in '67, I remember. I was in 2nd. grade, and remember this boy having a scar, or a scab on the back of his neck, and my mind ran wild, thinking he might be, an Martian. You say JonnyBaak, that this is the first color, sci-fi film. I think you are incorrect, as George Pal's classic 1950 pic, "DESTINATION MOON" was printed, in full color. What about "WAR OF THE WORLDS"?? Besides all that, thank you sir, for the excellent mini-doc, on this beloved movie 😁!!!

I first saw this movie on TV in the early 1960's when I was 8 or 9 years old, and it scared the heck out of me. I literally had nightmares, more than once. I found those things being inserted into everyone's neck and that creature in the glass globe to be especially disturbing. Even though you could clearly see the zippers on the Martian costumes in some scenes- - the movie still scared the crap outta me. I think part of it was that at that time, I was about the same age as Jimmy Hunt, so I could relate to that. It was years before i could watch it again. Now, I work in the film business and not too long ago I got to run a beautifully restored 35mm film copy. The color & and 'atmospheric set designs of the film were even more impressive on a giant screen. (and you can see those Martian zippers better!)

This was accurate, for the most part. But saying this "was the first science fiction feature filmed in color" isn't the case. Destination Moon, from 1950, was filmed in Technicolor. Won the Oscar for best special effects, too. --Well worth checking out.

One of my most vivid childhood memories was seeing the movie in glorious 3D in the movie theater during its original release. Only decades later did I learn the movie was unequivocally NOT filmed in 3D. OK: but I still remember seeing it 3D even though it's not. Incidentally, I was not alone in my delusion. Several sources listed the movie as 3D, including an early Leonard Maltin movie guide which I still have in my collection. Hillary Brooke, who plays the boy's mother, was a regular on the old Abbot and Costello television show which can be found on KZbin. I've seen the movie in two versions: both played on television at one time or another. The only major difference is a short, bizarre lecture on flying saucers-- with table top models-- that Arthur Franz delivers in the observatory in the last half of the movie. What astronomer Franz is doing with flying saucer models is unexplained and momentarily brings the movie to a dead halt. Props to JonnyBaak for an excellent, accurate video.

Well thanks for your explanation your views on this movie. I think many of the interesting scenarios and clips in the video make up for the rest of the cheesy costumes and all condoms on the walls reminds me of the sex club entrances in some bars of Greenwich village back in the '60s and '70s.. it's a hoot knowing that the spaceship is filled with about 3,000 condoms.. but the flying saucer examination room with that long long needle going towards Helen Carter's neck so slowly surely put chills up everybody's spine. The scene with the backyard sandpit and very eerie music was perfectly produced even though it look washed out colors. The colors bring up the earrings. But the black and white scene pretty much sanitizes these scenes. The black and white version of this movie is very crisp and clean... It's the use of the cheap coloring of the color version that makes the movie even more scarier I think that's done on purpose it's well done they thought these through to make us feel uncomfortable watching these scenes in the theater. And watching the hopeless communication between the son and the mother and father after they've been injected in back of their neck. Was very disturbing. We're growing up as kids our parents were the only ones we can trust for good or bad they were the ones who loved us. This movie gives it 180° tailspin. The look of contempt for their son and that slap in the face by Leif Erikson. Even got the kid really upset feeling so in love. Which gave us bottomless pit feeling if our folks ever became one of these creatures. Thanks for your rendition of this movie I didn't like the whole thing only the great scenes I mentioned. Some of the parts is greater than the whole. Well I'm thinking there are plenty of scenes and settings in this movie it's so unique and scary and great music it makes up for the cheesiness of the rest of the movie. Man like those cheap green suits. I haven't found the zippers in them yet.

Hmmm, I don't want to be "mean", but...it's a bit hard to know where to start with corrections. I will try to at least identify a few: This wasn't the first independent SF film made (just think of FLYING SAUCER, THE MAN FROM PLANET X to start with), nor the first color SF film---a few prior films would include DR. CYCLOPS, DESTINATION MOON, FLIGHT TO MARS, UNKNOWN ISLAND?) Arthur Gardner, Jules Levy weren't involved in any screenwriting on this film, and John Tucker Battle didn't ever write a "treatment" on the film, per se, he wrote 2 complete screenplays, which were later revised somewhat by Richard Blake. I'm not sure where you picked up the story about Battle being awoken from a dream (if I understood that part correctly), but that's not how the story was first inspired, if that's what you are getting at. Until I published my retrospect on the film back in the latter 70's, Luz Potter's involvement was completely unknown to the public (she was not credited). In fact, she'd never even seen the film. (I wonder about where she ever mentioned getting letters? That possibly came later, though she never mentioned it to me. ) Jack Cosgrove didn't do any of the matte painting work on the film: Those were done by Irving Block. The film wasn't shot in 3-D primarily due to cost. And yes, Glickman wrote the music, co-developed with Kraushaar (who, originally, in the mid-70's obfuscated the fact of said of Glickman's involvement.). I hope this helps clarify things a bit. (And yes, I interviewed many of the people who worked on the film and a few who acted in it, and have paperwork, scripts etc from the film as part of my past researches).

@@calql8er Are you still, in suspense? Just kidding!! The reason I said that is, by you listing "IT, THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE", and "ALIEN" in the same paragraph, couldn't be merely coincidence. You see, "ALIEN" is just a remake, of "IT, THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE". Most sci-fi/horror fans, do not even know that. That's why.

Ben Stein? The guy who worked for Nixon and made the documentary Expelled and writes for several publications like the American Spectator? Oh yeah, and had a show called Win Ben Stein's Money.

@@eduardo_corrochio Wow, did you just doubly insult Ben Stein? That's really how Ben talks. Easy there pardner. Ben is awesome and Johnny vids are pretty freaking educational. John T truly appreciates a wide variety, there is no insult in that.
@eduardo_corrochio2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRadioAteMyTV Calm down. I'm not insulting anyone. Stein has that monotonous voice that is iconic. But I don't know how someone would feel if they were told that they sound like that. I always enjoy Jonny's videos, and I know they're enlightening and informative. But the thing is, over time, some viewers have made disparaging remarks in the comments sections about his narration and voice. They can be mean. I figured, "here's another one", but I suppose I was wrong. Didn't mean any harm in what I said but clearly I stepped over a line and got some folks all ornery today even though my intentions were supposed to be kind.

Don’t get down on those highly-visible zippers on the Martian jumpsuits. Who says the Martians are into good tailoring? You REALLY don’t want to have the Martians naked.

First use of the term “Mutant” - Actually a mix of “Mute” and “Ant” as the Martians don’t speak and burrow like ants 👍

Saw this movie at around 9 or maybe up to 11, and though I love those kind of movies, this one was too over the top and just dumb as could be. The ant-lion pits and the green head were just too laughable for me. The ending was annoying. No kidding I liked From Hell It Came way better than this one. And that movie is awful.

This movie doesn't have a reputation for being a masterpiece of cinema. It's very simple and kind of cheesy, and I think many people have big nostalgia for it.

@@eduardo_corrochio Yes, and it's a whole--is-greater-than-the- sum-of-the-parts movie; if you surrender to it's disturbing mood, haunting visuals and creepy soundtrack it comes together in a way that totally defies any of its limitations and is the stuff of nightmares.

@@RobHollanderMusic hi Rob you saying the whole is greater than some of the parts. I have a different take on it.. also watching this as a kid frightened me very much. the film has a lot of good good and unique scenes especially the very eerie backyard scenes what the opening and closing of the sand pits and that music every time the same pit opens and closes it's like an in alluring invitation to to warn you about the hellish place of Lost souls
