Jon, the fog inside your lens is from condensation. When your lens is inside, the glass is warm, and when you suddenly go outside, the immediate cold creates condensation/moisture inside the lens which is really bad! To stop this, you can slowly acclimate your camera to the cold. I usually put my camera in my bag, and leave it outside for a half hour to an hour before I go out shooting, so that it slowly gets used to the cold temperature, that way no moisture gets inside! Also, when I come home, I let my camera and lenses slowly warm up inside of my camera bag, and then I seal them in a plastic bag with desiccant packs (moisture absorbers), to absorb any moisture! Hope this helps!!!
@oskargebel7 жыл бұрын
Deven Chilton That only happens if there is a crack.
@thomasdarvik91847 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be any humidity inside the lens . The "fog" is a result of a faulty lens with some gap or crack or something. He should change it :P Edit for clarification: the lens isn't broken (wrong word), but rather not made for those temperature differences. If you're planning on having your camera in "extreme" environments with temperature fluctuations, you might consider buying a lens that is made for that purpose. Or you might do what Deven suggests, and climatise the lens before using it.
@andreaskvale39617 жыл бұрын
The lens isnt faulty, that particular lens does not have weather sealing, which means that condensation will naturally occur, if you dont take any precautions, which Deven does.
@thong12257 жыл бұрын
Our country located highly moisture area. Especially in winter and rain season. So normally I'm storage my camera and lens with desiccant. That is usual way to storage camera and lens secure from moisture.
@DevenChilton7 жыл бұрын
Eupix So when you drink a cold beer outside on a warm day, only a cracked bottle will get condensation on the outside? Lol do some research on condensation my friend, it doesn't need a crack or anything.

Getting fog inside the lens is common in cold weather. It's from condensation when experienced heavy temperature change. It can be countered by acclimating the lens before using it. A ghetto solution is some hand warmer bags around the lens and a rubber band to keep it tight haha. The hand warmers can also be used for the batteries to keep them alive.

Jon, as a skydive photographer, I can tell that fog is created inside lenses in high altitudes and high moisture (cloudy). It really depends on the shape of the lens blades how prone to fogging some lens is. Typically lenses that have thick lens elements, will be experiensing moisture that is created, when the temperature of the lens changes fast.

Fog inside the lens happens from time to time, when you move from cold place to the warm one. It's just water that is in the air between glasses of a lens, just like in the air around us cousing glasses or windows to fog.

@mhitchner7 жыл бұрын
Jon/Marcus... I get fog inside my lenses sometimes when I take a cold camera/lens combo into a warm house or car. You can help avoid this if you put the camera/lens in a tightly sealed bag(Ziploc, dry-bag, or waterproof backpack) before you come back inside and then let the sealed bag equalize temp over an hour or two. The fog build up you saw is likely just condensation, which happens when a cold material contacts warmer, humid air. When the cold camera comes inside the moisture in the air will condense onto the cold glass of the lens and cause fogging. Sometimes it can even happen to lenses that are claimed to be weather sealed(some lenses are only considered weather sealed if they have a filter on the front).

I found tricks to avoid fogginess: 1) Pre-temp to your camera if possible, so if you're going to be outside in the cold maybe put the camera in the freezer for short time. (5min. max.) 2) if possible store your lens in a very dry environment. Try surrounding your lens with silica. (The little baggies you get in shoes) I had a sony 18-200 mm Lens that got moisture in it so when I went in an environment that was either drastically cold or warm it would fog up, being my first DSLR hi thought it was normal. Eight years later I sent my lens for some TLC at the camera repair shop and they found mold inside the lens, because apparently that happens surprisingly to both of us.

The Canon 85mm F1.2L ii, is not weather sealed, meaning that in big temp. changes you will get a buildup of fog inside the lens. As long as you take care of the lens and try to dry it after every use you should be fine! However, worst case scenario is frying of the USM (Ultra sonic motor), but i dont think there has been alot of cases of that happening.

Hey Jon, The prototype Douchebag you're currently using is a badass looking ski-backpack in general. Why not look into the possibility of equipping it with an "ABS System" (one of those avalanche airbag thingies) It already looks like it could house it. You could maybe offer it as a standalone "regular" backpack or as a ABS backpack. Now i know nothing about backpack design and or avalanche safety equipment but it might not be that bad of an idea. Anyway Awesome video as usual and Love the skiing trips

The lens problem might have been condensation from using it out in the cold and then bringing it straight inside to the warmth, I had something similar with my 1DX and 35mm 1.4 ii last month, it's best to keep it inside the camera bag when you go back home for an hour to let it slowly adjust to the warmer air!
