The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale was quite a mission to rebuild, with the architects having to sift through the rubble of the wreckage and piece it together like a jigsaw puzzle. Spiffing job!
@Elitist20 Жыл бұрын
The same thing happened to a pub in Melbourne - the Corkman Irish pub, previously known as (wait for it) the Carlton. The developers were fined and went to jail! 👊 Now it's being rebuilt, though not to the original design. ☹

The “snob screens” at the Prince Alfred, are actually because that small section was for women. And it let them close themselves off from the rest of the pub. In fact, the Prince Alfred is arguably the best preserved pub in the United kingdom that still has sections that separated the classes. Those “snob screens” are the one of only 8 left in the united Kingdom.

Always love your videos Joolz. Always full of little gems of social history. May I take a little moment to remember the tragic night of December 13th 1974, and the fire in the Worsley Hotel at 3/17 Clifton Gardens, a fire set by an arsonist that claimed the lives of six residents and that of Fireman Hamish ( Harry) Pettit, who lost his life when the roof collapsed, trapping himself and three other Firemen. You’ll never be forgotten Harry. RIP.

God I love running into people like that in London. Me and a friend were killing time in St Bart's, and a guy came up to us and started talking about his father and grandfather being expert woodworkers who restored old manor houses etc, fixing up window frames and door frames etc. At first I thought he was just daft and rambling, but after a few minutes I realized that he was literally giving us a completely true story about some little town up on the East coast. There was an airfield there in the war and sure enough I looked it up later and it was all 100% true. One of the best experiences I've ever had visiting London.

I lived about 200 yards from 'The Rec' from the time I was 2 years old until I was 18 and played there countless times. Back then there was a really good playground and a paddling pool which had a stone boat beside it. Also, where you were standing on the field looking at the Pavilion, there used to be a large and very popular cycling track. And as another coincidence, my wife lived in the house next door to Norman Wisdom when she was a child with her family. Browns Chemist was there back in the late 1950s and was the venue used in the Madness video, 'House of Fun'.

From 1975 until 1985 I lived at 15, Warwick Ave, spent many hours in the Warrington Hotel, also the Warwick Castle, when in 1977 the mews were closed off for the Queens 25th Jubilee. Lots of beer, music and dancing. That was a hang over and a half.😅 Not forgetting the Windsor Castle down in the village as I called it. The landlady was a copy of Joan Collins from Dynasty. She was a fabulous character. My useless information, the modern church at the bottom of Warwick Ave the stained glass windows came from a disused church in East St, Farnham Sy, my home town. Maida Vale underground railway station is a marvel, Joolz. The original style of architecture and those lovely roundels in mosaic are fantastic. There's loads of history in this area and all the original phone and postal boxes aplenty are really special. I can't say that there's any dilapidation in buildings here, whatsoever, and there has most certainly been an abundance of celebrities that lived here over the years. It must be good, because David Bowie had a spell in the district. An entirely interesting video, Joolz, and so many thanks. Take care.

Wow that is magnificent Joolz, you beat me to it, though i could never do a meander of your caliber. Randolph Avenue ! My late friend Dave aka Robo used to live in one of the flats down from the tube right through the 80's . I lived in Woking at the time and the Warrington became a regular haunt. Those were good high energy years in London. Little Venice was another experience in those days too. Your a big fan of David Bowie , me too but get this , he died on my 62nd birthday , coincidentally Jeff Beck died on my 69th this year, i get lots of coincidences. Coincidentally, The Every Man Cinema. I discovered the Every Man for the first time in Hampstead last year and realised that it was what Donovan was singing about on the excellent song from Sunshine Superman, Hampstead Incident which prompted me to film , a very amatuer meander from Hampstead tube station down to and up onto Hampstead Heath . The first words are Standing by the every man digging the rigging on my sails, then there's , The heath was hung with magic mists etc etc further in to the song. I could ramble on all afternoon. I also always think of Sunny Goodge Street another famous Donovan song when I pass through on the Northern Line Coincidentally ... Lol , plug plug, say no more. I am uploading as i type, a meander that I did yesterday here on the Island. I've decided to call my meander Play lists, when I put them together, Atmospheric Tours. I was given the nick name Atmospheric Derek by Robo and another Stocktonian friend Paul aka Dodgy back in the 70's. It stuck. Love your meanders Joolz, toodle pip. Ps I'm sharing this Joolz Guides to my Interesting 2023 play list and Facebook.Your films are very educational and most interesting.
