Joplin vs Obsidian - My Experience with Both Programs

There are multiple note-taking apps, and Joplin and Obsidian are two popular options. Which is for you? Let's discuss Joplin vs Obsidian.
Joplin is an offline note-taking app focusing on the simple side of things. It lets you type in Markdown and save text, images, attachments, and other things.
Obsidian also has a Markdown editor, but the app is more advanced as it has Knowledge Graph and Canvas options that provide additional value to project management and note-taking.

Joplin looks easier to use, but Obsidian has more features. I wonder how Joplin handles tables and what can be imported using its web clipper extension.

Obsidian has more features, for sure. I thought the web clipper only saves text and screenshots. Would love to see how it handles tables.

You can create tables of content using Markdown language. I'm not sure about importing from other softwar though, like Excel. Using Joplin in built web clipper, you can turn almost any internet page into a note, that you can then edit to your taste. I'm sure Obsidian has something similar, or at least a plugin for it.

I've been using Joplin for a few days now. There is support for tables and plugins that offer the ability to import CSVs and a plethora of other formats as tables

I've used both. I prefer Joplin, but I am most heavily a writer who then shares content out to folks. I use the Joplin Cloud service to enable that easily. I write short pieces and also very long works. One huge advantage of Joplin is its customizability via CSS. If you are CSS savvy, the options are endless. The editor in Joplin is just better as well. And if you don't care for it, you can hit a button and edit your notes and documents in any markdown editor you wish. Both Joplin and Obsidian have a graph viewer plugin, though I think Obsidian's is a bit smoother. Obsidian's Canvas plugin is excellent and I don't think Joplin has anything like that though I may be wrong. It's not something I'd use. Anyway. I used both for some time in an extensive trial run and Joplin won out for me. But Obsidian is also a great tool, and I can see a lot of people using both for different purposes.

Obsidian allows CSS too though? And I feel like Obsidian has a much better editor than any other MD editor I tried (Logseq, QOwnNotes, nvim, and more)

Hi. Could you please advice me as to which of the 2 have a better search feature. Because I have a lot of notes and often need to find notes by some specific words. This is my biggest and most important requirement. Am currently using Evernote whose search feature is awesome, but need to make the switch to another app. Thks.

@@Azure-Aura Not externally linked CSS. And from what I remember, it's CSS is somewhat limited (been awhile since I tried to do what I needed though). Regardless, if I can't @import "URL/styles.css"; then the tool is a no go.

@@mediatrix1111 I'm not sure. I think they both have great search. With Joplin you can't sort the results though. That is something being worked on I think. Joplin will even search inside of embedded PDFs, which is nice. Maybe they all do that. I don't know.

Thank you for your review. Joplin has a 100% free plan, as long as you use external cloud storage (Dropbox, which is also free up to a limit). Obsidian free plan is pretty much useless because it does not sync externally. For this purpose you can use MS Word instead 😁 My personal pick is Joplin, as most of the advanced, fancy functions offered by Obsidian and not relevant to me.

Obsidian can sync files through cloud storage platforms. It's slightly different, but easy.

@@maxbirsa No. You can use OneDrive or Dropbox to sync files for free. I made a video on it not long ago.
