"EL" refers to God in Hebrew, reason why it's attached to so many names in the Bible (IsraEL, SamuEL, DaniEL, ELisabeth). Notice the imagery of the father, Jor-EL, sending his only begotten son, Kal-EL, (the son of 'EL') to "save them all" as he descends to earth in the position of the cross.

There wasn't any gravity in the scene, that's why they went with CGI cape. And it doesn't look bad. TBH, Man of Steel's CGI hardly looks like CGI. It's awesome, sometimes, you even wonder if they recreated whole location or is it just CGI.
