Should I even go for law school? I have been so inspired to study in law and my dream is to become a transactional lawyer but im not too sure in which category. I am currently a junior starting my senior year of highschool in September, my grades are not bad but they arent amazing either. Ive taken honor, and AP classes but my GPA is still not the highest so I doubt I can get a scholarship for a college, which means thats already going to cost me. I have been looking at good Pre-law colleges/universities but gosh they are just so expensive so I might have to take the community college route for two years to achieve a better GPA to get a scholarship to a 4-year pre-law college. Which would definitely save me a lot but Id still have to pay. Is that a good idea? Or should I try to apply for 4-year right away with no scholarship? I might get one but lets just say I dont would that even be a good idea? Im sorry for all the questions I just wanna prepare for debt. I know law school itself is 7 years so thats definitely going to just add to whatever debt I have from college. If I do even take the route to go to law school I would be the first in my family to be a lawyer. I am going to apply for the FASFA to see how much I am qualified for but at the moment I dont even know that. I really just want to know how should I even go about going to college for law school? or should I just not do that since money is definitely not in my favor, and I don't have a job, or a car. My father is also not planning to stay in the areas I'm going to school so I wont have housing unless I dorm and then on top of that I will need to use public transportation. So please if you do read this, give me any tips you can.

Hey I know this is 2 months later but I’ll just sum it up best I can. Law school is 3 years typically, where you got the 7 years is probably college and law school combined so if you go straight through your undergraduate and into law school it’s 7 total years. In undergraduate you can qualify for grants and free financial aid, so definitely fill the FAFSA. If you’re trying to save money on undergrad going to a CC for the first two years is a good option, just make sure that the CC you pick transfers all the credits to a 4 year university. As for law school you don’t qualify for free grant aid from the gov but you could get scholarships which is dependent on your undergrad credentials and your LSAT score (sometimes need). I wouldn’t really recommend going to a pre-law program, especially if its a masters degree, because it just adds unnecessary years. If you can do your undergrad as a pre-law degree thats an option, though not required because it really doesn’t matter what your undergraduate degree is. Law school is a different ball game than undergrad entirely, and no undergrad program is going to fully prepare you. I’m a second year law student and when I was in undergrad I just did a B.S. in political science. High school grades don’t matter once you get done with undergrad and are applying to law schools. Your HS grades really only matter to get into a college for your undergrad degree. Right now, I wouldn’t stress about law school if I were you. Your focus should be getting into a 4 year university or a community college, and if you choose community college just make sure those credits are transferrable so you can finish year 3 and 4 at a 4 year university. Hope this helps

Please stop having kids if u can’t have money saved for ur kids college funds. It’s extremely unfair for them to be in debt because of ur poor or non existent planning as parents. We didn’t ask to be here. PS some of these fees that these colleges add on is beyond ridiculous. “Student self help fee” like wtf.🙄🙄🙄

Wow. I was going to go to Howard Law back in 1997 but ended up going to (insert a Midwestern top 25 law school in 1997). Not the best decision mental healthwise but I was able to get a merit scholarship where my tuition was $3000 per semester. My rent was $575 for a 2 bedroom. But this was in the midwest in 1997 to 2000. My mother is a Howard Law grad c'1965. She was the only woman in her class and the 2nd Black woman to be admitted to practice law in the state of Florida in 1965. I'm subscribing and making sure you get some coins! You are doing the darn thing. Proud of you!

Is there like a way or formula to figure out exactly how much your refund will be? I rewatched like 5x the part of you explaining that it has to do with cost of attendance minus what you actually pay but I’m still so confused lol. I feel like knowing the estimated amount before I choose a law school would help cause then I could decide if I would be able to afford rent in that area and things like that!

Congratulations! And I’m glad you found this helpful. It all depends on your lifestyle. I think you should try to have at least 2 months of your rent saved. Maybe try to start monitoring your monthly spending now to see how much you’d need. Also, don’t forget moving costs + furniture etc if it will apply to you

Is there anything you need to do in order to receive the entire cost of attendance through your student loans? Im currently in undergrad and wanting to go to law school, but my current student loans are nowhere near the numbers you mentioned. Does the loan automatically increase when you become a law student/grad student or do I need to do something prior to law school to get that much?
@jor_wish
@jor_wish Жыл бұрын
i think you’ll get the full amount when you aren’t working and are independent of your parents. fafsa will ask how much money you have and as long as it’s low enough i’m sure they’ll give you all of it. in undergrad it’s sometimes different bc they see your parents income but i think for law school most ppl get the full amount

Hey you said you were working as an associate in the summer of 1L. How long is the summer, my question is does a law firm hires you only for 3 months?
@jor_wish
@jor_wish 7 ай бұрын
yes. typically ppl work as a summer associate at a firm their 2L summer(May-August) and at the end of the summer they get a full time job offer to start working after they graduate 3L year. I did something a little non traditional and worked my 1L summer and the following semesters and summers until i graduated law school.
