God, I remember around 2011 in highschool hearing this and was so taken aback by the pure emotion behind this album. As a straight man this has had such an impact on my acceptance and understanding of gay men later down the road.

I'm starting to figure out transness and gender in a way I wasn't back in 2012, so listening to this in 2012 was really sad, and listening to this 2020 has been like swimming through liquid broken glass.

I had known the song racehorse: get married for years and I had tried to understand it as much as possible while only really understanding the beginnings of a whole story. Today I found the rest of the album and it really just shone the light on the nature of that song and on Jordaan Mason’s marriage and divorce as a whole. What an interesting and intricate album! It’s almost like a puzzle where certain imagery is used across songs and certain meanings and narrative pieces can only be picked up by making those connections. This whole album is like a memoir to read. It’s an honor to be listening to the full thing now.

gosh this album is so fantastic. obvious influences - horns and obscure lyrics of NMH and guitar and vocal delivery of phil elverum - but it’s such a captivating sound that so few have ever been able to pull off.

hard to think i've known this album for years, and every time i listen to it again, i develop a different and deeper attachment towards it. only a couple years ago i discovered henry darger and realized how many connections this album has to his work. jordaan also mentioned in some live performance that the album was essentially about two lovers struggling with gender identity trying to stay together during a war that's destroying the world (specifically, "1990 was a long year..." is when they are the last people on earth) and it is extremely open to interpretation, which i thoroughly enjoy. i love this album. super underground gem. changed my life, as cheesy as that sounds!

I'm glad I never lost my faith in neo-folk. Bobby's a drag.
@tcaw88136 жыл бұрын
You think this is neo folk? It's not dark enough I dont think. It's neo folk if you consider NMH neofolk, but even that has more themes about the holocaust and such.
@SkinnyAwkward6 жыл бұрын
Nah, I didn't say I think this is neo-folk. Just glad that I hadn't lost my faith in it. I probably shouldn't throw the term neo-folk around though, maybe just that contemporary styles of folk are an optimistic forecast for the future.

What's neo folk and who are some neo folk artists?
@hldr43454 жыл бұрын
@@pig5469 neofolk is a subgenre of folk originated in the early 80s, that featured heavy and dark atmospheres, tend to be very reverb heavy and feature at least a few other instruments other than the typical acoustic guitar. The main Neofolk group out there is Current 93, they've done everything from droning harmoniums to ambient piano to avant garde jazz folk
