Everytime I hear a foreigner say we Dutch people are blunt, I kinda wonder about what they mean. It's true that Dutch culture is very mercantile, straightforward and honest. It's socially accepted here to say that you are socially drained and prefer alonetime. However, we don't mean to say anything to disparage our company (saying a shirt is ugly is not done, however we can f.e. mention someone looks tired to show interest). We just don't like to insult our companies time nor intellect by making up stuff or being overly pompous. I can imagine this being strange for Americans who generally have a different social approach.
